Short n' Sweet Fic Challenge

In an effort to bring fic back to Tumblr, we're going to have a little fic challenge to shake the cobwebs off. The point of the Short n' Sweet Fic Challenge is exactly that -- write something short to get back to the fun of writing.

Here's the rule: Each piece should be around 500 words. That's it! If you want to write more or less, go for it, but this challenge to be fun and easy to participate in.

All types of fic are welcome -- sweet, spicy, or smutty -- it just has to feature Harry. Feel free to write something new, or revisit a favorite story/couple. And if you need some visual inspo, feel free to use one of the pictures below (thanks to @harrysblackcoat and @hslllot for sending the pictures.

I’m going through life admin tasks at the moment (typical January) and clearing out old notes on my phone, and came across notes I’d taken on STWS and TGR back in 2020/2021 and it completely took me back to those fics and how much I love them. Hello! I read so much I have a few recs for you although to say they're similar to STWS might be a stretch! I don't read a lot of romance? A few books I'd highly recommend in terms of writing style that I admire and aspire to though are:

Women by Mihail Sebastian You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi East of Eden by John Steinbeck On Beauty by Zadie Smith The Weather in the Streets by Rosamond Lehmann In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (trigger warning)

They're all thoroughly readable, and if you're someone who's usually not into reading 'older' things can I just say it's those books and that writing that fills my cup the most :)

Hi Kate!! I just needed to write and say thank you for putting STWS on public again. I love that story so much and it is still one of my favorite fics ever. The way you write has always been extremely captivating and how you discuss grief in it is exceptional. I hope you're feeling more love for your stories now!

idk if you’ve ever answered this question but where does your username come from? like is what’s the context? i luv ur user bc when i first found your acc I read it as “bullet down fics” lmao and thought it was cool

It comes from the Switchfoot song The Beautiful Letdown. There's a lyric that says 'and though it may cost my soul i'll sing for free' which hit me straight in the chest as a teenager and I guess I've never let it go! This blog is 14 years old now, and that's the only name it's ever had :)
