More about Nails
Have you ever thought of opening a nail salon or becoming a nail technician?
If the answer is yes, here are some few tips to consider becoming starting the business. Most businesses in Ontario need to complete a minimum of three basic steps:
1. Find out what licences and regulation apply to your business. Its very important to have a certificate in cosmetology and a provincial license before you start your business.
2. Register your business. You will need a permit from the municipal levels of government
3. Determine if you need to collect and remit HST (Government of Canada, 2020).
For me personal i wouldn't want to become a nail technician however i would invest in a nail salon, by leasing or buying a property and opening the salon and rent several station. I wouldn't be present in the salon on a day to day basic but i would make visits to the salon to ensure that everything is going as planned.
I think the start up cost to open the salon would be at least $80,000 depending on the location of the salon and the lease fee.

Lets talk about nails design and styles!

Have you ever what is the difference and similarities of acrylic or gel nails?
Acrylic and gel nail are both nail enhancement, however acrylic nails look less natural than gel nail. Acrylic nail are cheaper than gel nail, acrylic nails are more durable and long lasting while gel nail usually last approximately 15 days. If acrylic nails are applied properly with the correct quantity and primer does not affect the nail bed, gel nails can be applied with or without base or primer and also will not damage the nail bed, overuse-age will however affect the nail bed for bot acrylic and gel nails. Gel nail have a faster curing time, which are cured under uv light, some cure with a gel activator and do not need uv light. Acrylic have a slower curing time (Acrylic vs gel nails, 2020) .
Go ahead and watch the below video explaining the difference

In the beauty industry, a huge majority of a hairstylist clientele is usually through recommendation from another and based on views on social media.
I have held my belief that Whenever a client sits in my chair, I have the complete trust and faith of that person to perform the service(s) they desire. Thus, it is my responsibility to complete this task with satisfactory result in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Theirs is also those clients that you will gain based on your geographic location as well as the manner in which you operate your salon in terms of first impression, professionalism and cleanliness.

Its that time again to get your nails done!
Do you know what a nail technician work area is like?
A nail technician usually works at a nail salon or beauty salon, usually a nail technician rents out a station for their own. Rent would be a fixed amount each month or sometimes a percentage of what the nail technician earns. Each nail technician will be responsible for building their own clientele. The atmosphere of the work area should be very clean and looks very professional. Technician should wear lab coat to represent a professional work attitudes and they must also obey health safety codes and regulation (Sokanu, CareerExplorer, 2020).

About me
Hi everyone,
I am La Kail, from the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica, where the weather is amazing the entire 365 days per year. As an international student i am here in Canada to study my current program in Business Human Resource Management. My hobbies includes travelling and shopping, i have been to five of the fifty two states in the US and hoping to travel to more as time goes by.
I am privileged to inform you about my first blog ever!
My blog focuses on small business specifically a nail technician in a beauty salon. A nail technician is a beauty specialist who is responsible for the grooming and appearance of a client finger nails and toenails, sometimes by using artificial decorating nails (Sokanu, 2020) .
Below is a creative nail art work with the colors of the Jamaican flag

(Instagram, proudjamaicans)
Nail technicians are exposed to a wide variety of chemicals during there work duty, while using products for doing manicures, pedicures, nail arts and artificial nails.
Did you know, exposure to nail products through inhalation and dermal (skin) contact as technicians prepare, apply and remove these products, with the highest level of exposure occurring during acrylic nail sculpting and gel nail polish procedures may cause a bad effect on your health?
The 4H ethylene-vinyl alcohol-polyethylene gloves are the most protective gears that can be worn to reduce the health rick factors associated with applying nail products. Below is a picture of the 4H gloves, which are very bulky and inelastic and also expensive (Wiley Online Library, 2019) .

Having the right tools
Welcome back!

Nastascia here.
In my first post I gave an overview on just about everything I believe a hair salon should consist. To continue where I left off, I firstly want to elaborate on how to ensure that you have the right equipment and products available.
It is simple:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/15551561183656361/
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/723250021393523207/
· Being Organized
· Keeping a proper inventory
· Having the right team with the right attitude
Appointment
Note however that none of the above is relevant without having your clientele base. Which takes us to the next phase.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/574209021224386646/
How?
Knowing your clientele, what they desire and how you will attract them is an important aspect of operating a salon business. As with any business, knowing your objective is primitive. Because it is through such that you will be able to align your business on the right path.
As I mentioned in my first post that my main focus is Afro Braiding, weaving, Corn rows, Wig making and Bonding, I however, believe in flexibility. Being flexible in your business will not only be beneficial to you but also your client’s and their needs which in turn will ensure/ maintaining your client’s loyalty.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/208573026479996165/
Another way to build your clientele tell is through presentation. You will need to look at not only the attire of yourself and staff but also your place of business. A well layout and thought of salon design/ decor are ways to bring both comfort and relaxation to your clients. Making sure that it is appealing to the eyes and well organized are just a few of the things that can be done to help build your clientele.

I will talk some more about clientele Professionalism in my next blog.

Creative Burnout
We can all experience burnout from time to time. Where the creative juices are just not flowing. This can be stressful and affect our productivity. Especially as a makeup artist. How do we combat burnout? How do we not let it affect our creative job? Where can you look for inspiration?
Before continuing, take this poll on experiencing creative burnout.
http://www.survey-maker.com/QVMGZYJ
(The Skill Collective, 2018)
Here are some helpful hints to help curb burnout:
1. Look for inspiration from other creators. This could be from other makeup artists, photographers, content creators, movies, magazines, etc (The Skill Collective, 2018). First, this gives your brain a break. While looking at others you may find colours, shapes, people that spark inspiration. This inspiration will come through in your makeup art/business. Be sure not to copy and to credit your fellow creator!
2. Move Your Body. Get in a workout, go for a walk with a friend or your dog, bike, rollerblade, etc (The Skill Collective, 2018). Basically, anything you can do to get your body moving. Exercise releases endorphins, which make you feel good. Your brain will be focusing on the movement of your body and not the burnout you're experiencing.
3. Do something fun. Play with your pet, put a face mask on, have a phone call with a friend, go for lunch or dinner. Distract yourself! Again, it's all about giving your brain a break. Inspiration can strike at any time. You could be putting a face mask on and be inspired by the colour.

(Strohl, 2019)
Working in the creative industry can be draining. You are constantly creating new and better content. Be sure to give your brain some time to absorb inspiration. Have you experienced burnout? What tips do you have for avoiding burnout?

Marketing Yourself and Your Artwork
A huge aspect of being a freelance makeup artist is marketing yourself. Marketing yourself will attract new clientele, expand your brand and showcase your artistry (Online Makeup Academy, 2019). Starting off can feel intimidating and stressful. The easiest way to start marketing yourself is the use of social media.
(Postcron, 2018)
Before continuing, take this poll on which social media you use the most. Click the link below.
http://www.survey-maker.com/QVMGZYJ
There are many platforms that you can use. Some of the major platforms include Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. These platforms are free to start using and many of us are using them already. Many artists use a combination of platforms to reach a wider audience.
First, you want to think about the content you want to post. This can include pictures, video tutorials, short written updates, etc. Each platform has unique qualities.
Check out the dos and don’ts of social media marketing:
youtube
Instagram is mostly pictures and short video clips. Making it great to showcase your work on clients (Online Makeup Academy, 2019). This would be a good choice for bridal/beauty freelance and quick tutorials. Facebook shares similar qualities to Instagram. Both platforms have a gallery type page. Making it easier for clients to browse.
YouTube is for videos of various lengths. Artists will use YouTube videos for tutorials and vlogs. Some artists choose to record their makeup jobs. This gives the audience a snapshot of a day in the life of a makeup artist. Many use this platform for tutorials. This is a great way to engage with your audience and teach them techniques.
(Postcron, 2018)
Twitter is used for frequent written updates. There are not a lot of images posted on Twitter. Artists can use this to talk to an audience, ask questions and provide updates. This would not beneficial if you are looking to show a collection of images of your work.
What platforms do you use for personal use? Which would you be interested in trying for a beauty business?

Self-Taught or College Educated?

So you’re thinking of pursuing a career as a makeup artist. You have a passion for art and creativity. You love doing your friend's and family's makeup. You think this would be an awesome career path. Do you pursue your career as a self-taught or college-educated artist?
Before continuing, take a survey on your view of being self-taught or college-educated? Click the link below.
https://www.survey-maker.com/QVMGZYJ
I have experience as a self-taught and college-educated makeup artist. I started in the industry at 16 years old. My first experience was a co-op placement in retail. I had zero experience other than doing my own makeup. I started out by sweeping floors, stocking and cashing out customers. Slowly, I learned simple techniques from other artists. Building up my own skills.
Being a self-taught artist requires a lot of self-learning and discipline. It also takes a lot of research and possibly a mentor (Johnson, 2018). You must learn the ins and outs of the business through trial and error (Johnson, 2018). It can be tough to learn all the aspects on your own.

After a couple of years in the industry, I attended a private makeup college. The two pictures attached are my own. The course covered everything from hair styling, beauty makeup to prosthetic appliances and creature design. I found this experience extremely beneficial. The most important lessons were about hygiene standards, doing your taxes, set and clientele etiquette. This course also extremely improved my technique.
Click the link below to see another makeup artist’s opinion! (Start at minute 14:00)
youtube
In short, there is no right or wrong answer. There are amazing artists who are completely self-taught and very successful. There are also amazing artists that have attended college. This is completely personal to you. Knowing which environment you learn best will help decide which path is right for you.
Do you learn best in a classroom setting or with hands-on training? Did your opinion change after the post and the video?

Success
Everyone goes into business with the mind of succeeding, however not everyone has the right ingredients to be successful. In my opinion the right ingredients include but are not limited to having a Plan and Budget.

Budget
Budgeting is an important aspect when undertaking any financial activity. As a new salon owner, there are certain decisions and planning that you will have to make in the beginning. You should have to make a budget for:
Property Rental or Leasing
Equipment and Products
One year Employee’s salary
Planning a head for the sustainability of the business to take care of its own expenses, overheads and unforeseen occurrences at least 1 year is crucial in my opinion. By ensuring that there are enough funds available. Putting into place the necessary safety precautions in the event of an emergency or accident.
As a hairstylist/salon owner there are certain basic essentials that are deemed important. Such as Having the right equipment’s, the best and right quantity of products available and the right attitude is a key contributor to getting the job done right.
