I've been back on a Hankcon phase and there's one type of DBH fans that I genuinely don't get: those who insist that Hank and Connor have a father/son dynamic. It's a valid dynamic if that's what you like, but I never felt like that's what happened between them. Like, even if I didn't ship them I would see them more as a "buddy cop" duo or a "mentor/mentee" situation at best (I don't think Hank even teaches Connor anything 😭). Do people have a weirdass view of father/son relationships or am I the one being obtuse here?

Some of it is people assuming a certain trope will be present and then hallucinating that it actually was. Specifically, I've seen plenty of people assume that Hank's kid died long enough ago that he'd be Connor's apparent age if he'd lived. From what I remember, the actual in-game evidence shows that he only died a few years ago. He wouldn't be Connor's apparent age or Connor's actual age or Connor's (in)experience level. Nothing matches.

Part of it is that Hank's vibe is like he's been a washed-up alcoholic for a couple of decades. Sure, he'd have been fired by now, but there are countless vaguely similar films noir where an ex cop character gives off the same air Hank does. What people remember from art is how it made them feel, not what the nitty-gritty text on some object you can examine says. (I just checked a wiki, and Cole died in 2035. The game is set in 2038. He would have been 9.)

Hank fucking up at work for three years or less makes a lot more sense, but it isn't how things feel if you play the game. (Or, well, watch a bunch of playthroughs, which is what I did before reading all the porn.)

I too roll my eyes, but I can see how they got there.

It's a Getting Your Mojo Back plot. They were expecting the replacement goldfish version. I was expecting the gay-as-fuck Caves of Steel version.

Tiger with the memories

Tiger is one of those stuffed animals that holds lots of memories. I know that's almost all of the ones I see! But in Tiger's case, he represented the memory of a person too. His current person wrote:

I'm writing because I'm looking to restore my recently deceased mother's childhood stuffed animal. I've attached pictures of the tiger I'd like restored. There are some repairs needed but I would also like the fur to be replaced. The stuffing inside is also very hard. My mother got Tiger in either the 50s or 60s. 

Here are a few of the diagnosis photos she sent:

I recognized Tiger's style right away. I'd had a previous patient similar to him a few years back. So I suggested lining his belly area (so he could keep as much of his stripes as possible, and recovering the rest (so he could be furry again and get new stripes there). He also got a spa (to replace the foam stuffing that had hardened). And his family opted to keep him one eyed (it was part of his charm) but to give him a removable pirate patch.

And here he is, all better! The visually astute among you may notice you can see a bit more lining through his belly than one might have thought from his diagnosis photos. The reason is that he actually had foam holding some of those orange areas together, not fabric!

He flew home to Massachusetts and his family wrote:

Tiger has arrived home. Thank you so much for all your help. My brother, dad, and I are so pleased with the work you did restoring my mother's stuffed animal from your childhood. Coincidentally he arrived just in time for Mother's Day, the first one without my mum, and I am so grateful for the work that you did.

We don’t talk enough about how many of Lottie’s actions read as covert forms of self-harm and suicidal ideation. She allows Shauna to beat her within an inch of her life without flinching. She eagerly offers up her body for the others to eat if she dies. She stays eerily calm as Travis chokes her, as if she welcomes it. She’s visibly disappointed when she isn’t the chosen sacrifice in the Pit Girl hunt. She is so ready to be the first to drink from the potentially poisoned cup in the adult timeline. And when Callie shoves her down those stairs, she looks truly at peace.

I don’t think Lottie ever truly had a will to live, at least not in the way the others did. Her survival was never about herself; it was about giving everything she had to the group. She didn’t believe she was allowed to die until she had emptied herself completely in service of the people she loved. Her worth, in her eyes, was measured by how much of herself she could give away, how thoroughly she could be broken for the sake of others. Which is why it’s so heartbreaking when the other survivors treat Lottie like a martyr only when it suits them (when they’re starving for meaning or desperate for someone to pour their faith into) and then dismiss her as a liability once she has destroyed herself completely for them and has nothing more to give. They feed into the very belief that’s killing her: that her only value lies in her sacrifice and her pain.

The take I saw about "Why POC characters are differently described than white characters." And the entire rant was basically just "I keep reading books by white authors about white characters, and I'm angry that these books by white authors writing white characters isn't about POC characters written by POC authors." THEN FUCKING READ POC WRITTEN BOOKS WITH (matching the author) POC MAIN CHARACTERS???? Why the ever loving fuck do you buy a white written book with a white protag if you demand a book with example an Indian main character WHILE ALSO demanding that the author knows and has experience that align with their protag aka being an Indian author? Also if you personally by default assume that the white author's protag is gonna be white, before even opening the book, and you wanted a POC character... then why the fuck did you get a book by a white author???

And dumb excuses like "most books are written by white authors"::::::: Indie publishing, self-publishing, foreign publishing, at this point you have to purposefully turn your brain off and ignore that you can use search engines to find POC books. You literally have to choose to avoid POC written books and instead buy all the white author and protag books.

I mean if they at least actually read books by (halfway competent) white writers about POC characters or a POC written book about a white protag. Maybe I'd get the discussion point, like as a comparison and a point of improvement for aspiring writers with aims for diverse casts of characters. But this person wasn't even halfway there and whining that their Booktok dreck and cheap copy paste bodice ripper library wasn't more diverse, when they didn't even try to diversify their own shopping habits to begin with. Like just for a second but real talk. If you out of your own volition decide to buy the fucking bottom of the barrel book in terms of writing skills and experience, and then get mad and angry it's written like a midterm paper that needs to hit a word count while the student barely trying to get a passing grade; what the fuck do you expect? Some of these books are barely above 5th grade level writing and you're expecting a fucking libraries worth of writing experience from these books where clearly most of the energy went into looking up adjectives. The issue in this case isn't the author or the protag, the problem is that you decided to buy and read the book.

I've found a few rants about descriptions of nonwhite characters useful. One blind spot I used to have was not noticing how a lot of books mention ethnicity only when a character is nonwhite (and this isn't something that the POV character would necessarily do).

On the other hand, a huge, huge number of such posts will fixate on things like "Nobody describes white skin in terms of food/commodities" or "Nobody kinks on white skin", and... whut? That is every second page in some books! Ivory, alabaster, peaches, blah blah blah. It's inescapable!

Probably the angriest rants I've seen boil down to "I want self insert trash for me. It's not fair that other people are well fed."
