Fundamentals of Communication Evaluation
Kidscan Children's Cancer Research.
During these past 6 weeks I have definitely found this brief challenging in so many ways. When we first received this brief my first thoughts were that it was going to be really hard to get across a cancer related charity. With so much emotion and how much it has affect the world and people we love, it was hard not to want to represent and help this charity. To begin with my thoughts were on negative thoughts, on different statics on how many people are diagnosed and how many children die from this disgusting disease. We were told to think about the positive and not the negative, it took a while until I got the swing of things and began producing some decent work.
Out of the Kidscan project I have enjoyed making the Christmas cards and the fundraising pack the most. I love designing layouts and making things look good, so these fell into my areas of expertise. I learnt a lot about laying out images and text together and going to workshops on Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign helped a lot as it refreshed my memory. I loved perfecting the Christmas card and putting the fundraising pack together.
I found the hardest was trying to explain my idea across for my fundraising event for an obstacle course. I came up with an event slogan ‘let’s tackle cancer together’ which I applied to an event poster as well as merchandise. I found it challenging to create the posters at first, but when I found an idea I liked it got easier to develop, giving me a final result.
All together for my first brief I am really pleased with what I have come up with and I was definitely tested on my abilities on this brief. I started of not particularly liking this subject as it was hard to get into, however when I started getting ideas and working on suggestions, I began to like what I was doing, soon enough I enjoyed what I was doing and forgot about the negative input to the brief and thought about the positive. I am glad that I got the chance to do this as it is for a fantastic cause and I love to what I can to raise awareness and money for cancer. The Kidscan team are incredible and are people that should be idolised as they show how much we should look up to them. They aren’t just an organised charity, they’re the heroes along with the children battling cancer. I am so appreciative for this opportunity and honestly really enjoyed this brief.

These are my merchandise that have the Kidscan logo printed onto them, or alternatively the slogan used for the obstacle course event. They range from a jumper, t-shirt, beanie, tote bag, badge and a purple tie. These are great ways to raise money and can both be sold at the fundraising event or at the Kidscan website, all donations are appreciated and helps more children.

These thank you postcards were done to purposely to match the Kidscan poster. I really enjoyed doing the post cards as I thought they looked fun and still said what it needed to project.

It took me a while to get the composition of the text to fit right towards the bottom half of the poster, but I got there in the end and found a solution to the problem. I think the post is fun and successful in many ways as it is simple but gets the information across quickly. After the challenging of these posters, I decided on these being my final two posters, one for the vent and one for the charity itself.

After coming up with the idea of the obstacle course, I needed to find a way that I could present this to the public. I thought the best way would be posters around the city, and people spreading the word around. I sketched a few ideas of a main image for my slogan which was ‘let’s tackle cancer together’ I tackling made it appropriate as it was like tackling an obstacle course. My first poster design as very plain and dull, I disliked the idea that there was too much space and nothing really flowed nicely into each other. I then began adding more colours and spicing up the image by adding speech bubbles and more words to the poster.
Thinking of ways of making a poster for raising awareness for Kidscan, I looked into statistics. My first poster was inspired by a scoreboard, I made cancer and health verse each other as different teams with a scoring of 1 to cancer and 4 to health, scoring a total of 5. This was the statistics that 1 out of 5 children will not survive.
My next idea was taking the idea of a scoreboard into a game. I researched on the game Space Invaders on how they laid things out and how I could represent it in a poster. I used statistics again to make my score. I really liked this poster, however I thought that they didn’t say much information about the charity itself, therefore I made another poster.
I created this sponsor form for people taking part in the obstacle course. It works in a similar way to Race for life, were participants get to sign up and get people to donate money and sponsor them either online or by printing of a copy of the sponsorship form. I made the scaling of the sponsor form bigger as it needs to be big enough for people to read without any struggle.

For my fundraising event I did a mind map to help me come up with suggestions and ideas. Bouncing of ideas with a fellow pier I came up with the idea of having an obstacle course. My ideas got stronger and I fell in love with this event planning. I decided that it should be an obstacle course that allow families to spend time together on the weekend. Making the event competitive as the parents are competing against their children. To make it easier for younger children their course would be made easier. An example of this would be swapping the objects such as stepping in the tires for adults and having a sack race to lower the level. Low crawl under the nets for adults would be crawling in a tunnel. The same would apply for climbing and other parts that could be too hard for children to tackle. However teenagers will be old enough to tackle the same obstacle course as their parents which will give the audience and themselves a great time too. They’ll be more than one obstacle course for other families and friends to join in, refreshments will be around and making donations will be available too. You can sign up and take part and get yourself sponsored to help the Kidscan Charity.

Following Christmas cards designs I decided to use the same font for my fundraising pack. I therefore drew all the headings and went over them in fine liner pen. Scanning them into Photoshop and re-colouring the headings, I inserted them into my InDesign project to see how the font laid and how it would look. I was disappointed on the outcome as I thought it made my work look unprofessional and not as clean. The font itself was a nice gentle font, however mixed with the fundraising pack it didn’t fall right, and I was made to change my idea and find a font I liked. Finishing my pack f I thought it looked clean and had a fun twist on some pages, and was pleased with my final outcome.

I started off by making a mind map and coming up with positive lyrics in Christmas songs and what I thought of when I think of Christmas. I then began sketching and coming up with different ideas, however these weren’t all that great. I started to feel a bit lost, until I started doing more drawings and began to work with swirls. I then drew myself some thumbnails and came up with over 20 designs. I thought some of them were really strong and would be nice developed and printed out. I decided to focus my Christmas cards as a four pack selection. I then printed them out and they looked fantastic together and I was really proud of the outcome.

These are Campaigns made for raising awareness and for charity. I thought these images told a story and it makes you realise how serious things can be. These posters stood out to me as I saw the meaning behind it and how it impacts other people's lives. People need help and are affected by other's actions. It's a way of showing people that you have someone who you can talk to, and letting people know how they can help others. Getting the message across and attracting the public eye is exactly what you want and need to deliver the main idea of your campaign or charity. I think these all work effectively in different ways and inspires me to challenge myself during this brief.

These are some hand drawn type that I found interesting. I like how typeography can be so intricate and simple at the same time. Sometimes the simpliest words can become the biggest meaning and the detailed type compliments the true meaning. Typography is important when using them in posters, advertisement and raising awareness.

Fundamentals of Communication
I started my first day at Uni at Media City. This was the first time I have met the people on my course all together. We were given our first brief which is help to raise awareness for children who suffer with cancer, this charity foundation is called Kidscan.
My first initial thought was that it was a really sensitive subject and engaging and representing this charity would be difficult. With everyone's opinions and questions bouncy around I realised that things can be reversed to become a happier and more positive outcome.
I think that the chosen colour that Kidscan chose for their theme was very clever and I agree to try and accomplish and create outcomes using the colour purple. The Lavender coloured ribbon is a sign of awareness for all different types of cancer, and as Kidscan haven't specified what type of cancer they support it is clear it is for all. I am not sure on whether this was intentional, but I think the idea behind the colour works.
I feel that it will be a challenging topic, but will be a great idea to start sketching some type and creating a few ideas. Taking risks and looking at work in a different light.

Spotify Banners for the Salford Symphony Orchestra
These are two Spotify banners that I created, one portrait and the other in a landscpae format. I used images from previous photo shoots and colour studies to create the background. I think the banners work rather well as it catches your eye and makes you want to click on it to what it is. The Spotify logo features on both of the banners, I also placed the banners into the place it would be on Spotify if it was real. This gave the photo shopped image a complete finish to a pop up banner which advertises the Salford Symphony Orchestra
