This quote from Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer reminded me of I Am the Grand Canyon by Stephen Hirst (both are VERY good reads). Often efforts to protect nature end up stagnating it—humans are part of the environment, not just a destructive force, and putting nature “behind a fence” is a way to relinquish our responsibility to care for the world the way it cares for us. This is my problem with national parks; while it’s extremely important to prevent destructive activity, the “leave it as it is” policy prevents any constructive activity as well. This is examined thoroughly in I Am the Grand Canyon; the Havasupai people were forcibly removed from their homeland in and around the Grand Canyon to make way for a national park, as if the government felt the need to protect the land from the people who had cared for it and contributed to its beauty for hundreds of years. That sort of relationship is the heart of Braiding Sweetgrass. A reciprocity with the world is missing when conservation is hands-off, and I think that’s an important concept to understand if we want to help heal the damage we’ve done to the environment.

20 June 2025: No change since my last reblog (16 June)!
Hyam Shehab has reached out to me many times from many accounts as Tumblr continues to ban her. Her family is trying to evacuate Gaza so their young boys, Zaen and Yehya, can grow up in safety. They have already been displaced many times. Despite how long I’ve been in communication with Hyam, her family’s fundraiser is still at only 3% of its goal.
This campaign is vetted by @/90-ghost and donation protected.
Their story and Muhammad Shehab’s original post below the cut.
Their story:
I am Muhammad Shehab from Gaza. These are my sons Zaen and Yahya:

I write this after much thought and hesitation, but my motivation to save my family's life is stronger than any considerations.
I am here to ask you for urgent assistance in evacuating my family from Gaza to a safe place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We left our home in Gaza and were displaced many times under inhumane conditions, suffering from all forms of oppression, disease, pollution, and lack of security and treatment
The occupation bombed my family's homes and killed many of our loved ones, friends and relatives, and we wait for death every minute.
I have been rejecting the idea of traveling from Gaza since the start of the war, but I have a feeling of fear of losing my family, and then feeling remorse will be of no use.
I apologize that I had to do this. I am asking you to help evacuate my family from the hell of war to a safe place, provide temporary shelter for my family, and secure the necessary needs of the family during this difficult period.
As the cost of leaving Gaza is very high for a large number of individuals, my family, under these difficult circumstances, is beyond my ability.
Current situation: So far, my family has been displaced nine times, enduring untold hardships along the way, living in inhumane conditions. The constant threat of invasion and attack on Rafah hovers over them, putting their lives in greater danger.
Asking for Help: I started this fundraising campaign to urgently raise money to help my family leave Gaza as soon as possible. The plan is to apply for asylum anywhere, the United States, Canada or Europe.
Every dollar means something, and your support will not only provide a lifeline for my family but also restore their hope for a better future.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and standing with us during this difficult journey.
Muhammad Shehab’s original post can be found here.
If you have anything to spare, this family has been through so much with so little. Please send anything you can their way to help them fulfill their dream of a better life for Zaen and Yehya.

✅️Vetted by @gazavetters, my number verified on the list is ( #640 )✅️
My name is Fatima, a 21-year-old woman🤰.Just one month before the war, I was engaged, dreaming of a warm home and a small family. But the war tore us apart—my fiancé and I were separated between northern and southern Gaza, with no way to communicate💔.
Despite the pain, we held on to hope. Months later, I left my family and joined him.We got married, believing it was the start of a new life. But the bombing returned, and we were displaced again… Now we live in a fragile tent in western Gaza, awaiting the birth of our first child amid conditions unfit for life🥹😭.
I’m pregnant🤰, and my due date is near🥹. I have none of the essentials I need as a mother or even as a human being🙏.We lack everything: medical care, food, clean water, and basic supplies for childbirth and the baby🥲.
I’m not asking for the impossible—just enough to protect my life and my baby’s

My campaign is new and has not received much support. Please support me and my family.
