As soon as his phone pinged again with yet another notification, Benji was once more forced to reckon with his uncle’s ward’s complete lack of consideration for the spellcheck tool. He squinted down at his screen, trying to decipher Hayden’s near-incoherent message. Still too proud to admit he might be on the cusp of needing a better reading prescription, it took him longer than it should have.
Eventually, he concluded that his pseudo-little brother was asking to go see the new Lilo & Stitch with him this weekend. There were few things he wanted to do less, but he knew that exposing himself to one of Joseph’s famous tantrums would be more of a chore than sitting in the dark for two hours to watch another regurgitated Disney film.
Sure, he typed back. Also those little red, squiggly lines under what I can only assume is every word you type is not a suggestion, but a plea for you to sharpen your phonics skills.
Rolling his eyes, he slid his phone back into his blazer pocket, patting it twice to ascertain it was still there and hadn't fallen through the mythical portal to nowhere that his glasses usually succumbed to. Nine times out of ten, they were either on top of his head, wedged between the pages of one of his textbooks, or lost amongst Jasper’s sofa cushions. However, he would still very much like to blame a sinister, pocket-sized black hole for when he really had no idea where they were and wasn’t entirely willing to blame his own carelessness. Right now, his phone seemed safe, but Benji’s own well-being hung in the balance when a student barged right into him, nearly knocking the papers he had out of his hands. A few strays floated to the ground and he tutted at the boy in question.
“Marco, is there any need to run? You have to watch where you're going,” he scolded, his tone a little less biting when the boy immediately crouched down to help him retrieve the fallen sheets of Alexander the Great centric essays.
“Sorry, Professor Kent!” Marco said, tapping the pages against the palm of his hand to sort them back into alignment and handing them over. “But you never know when the sun’s gonna disappear again! Gotta get out and enjoy it while you can!”
Benji had to laugh at that and nodded, pushing his glasses further up his nose. “Alright, Marco. I’ll give you that. But go meet the sun slowly and while looking both ways.”
The self-proclaimed number one fan of spring, Benji could hardly begrudge Marco the opportunity to lap up the sunshine before it was swallowed by the Manhattan smog again. With a wry smile, he watched the boy walk at a pace that suggested he might as well have been running anyway, half-jogging down the corridor and passing a young woman that caused Benji to do a double take.
Secretly, Benji thought Ariadne Halliday always looked a tad out of place in modern-day New York. Oftentimes, he thought it more likely to find her pressed between the pages of a dark academia book. Not that he could necessarily talk with his tweed blazers and “obviously English face” as one Miss Aguilar had kindly put it. But while he had seen Ariadne and her golden hair perusing the shelves of A Novel Idea or stealing the spotlight on Jasper’s Instagram grid, the one place he had never expected to find her was at the university. He knew better than to jump to conclusions. She could be simply visiting their mutual friend after all, although he knew Jasper was far too green about his new job right now to suggest mixing business with pleasure and inviting a friend around to his office. But the group of peers she was with, he recognised. Mason had taken one of his medieval history classes as an elective once and she seemed to be conversing with them in a manner that suggested no small degree of camaraderie.
Intrigued, Benji turned and kept on walking to his original destination. He rapped his knuckles quickly on Jasper’s office door, but didn’t bother waiting for an answer, just pushed his way in.
“I just saw Ari in the hall,” he said in lieu of a greeting, confusion scratching at his tone. He waited, but when Jasper didn’t seem particularly shocked by the news, Benji’s eyes widened.
“Wait, is Ari a student here?” he asked. He sounded too gleeful about something that he knew had probably landed Jasper in a world of trouble - not because he thought his friend had become entangled with the other woman, but because he knew that that was only due to Jasper’s obliviousness and not from a lack of effort on Ari’s end. This new development complicated things further but, unfortunately, Benji was an incorrigible gossip. He couldn’t help but delight in the scandal of it, and would kindly claim it was because he just liked the pretty blush that was sure to coat his best mate’s cheeks.
“Oh, Jasper dear, what have you gotten yourself into?”
