I grew up listening and dancing to Aretha Franklin and there was never a time when that amazing voice did not move me. So many memories today at the news of her death, but most of all I’m feeling extremely grateful to have lived at the same time as this greatest of singers. She opened her mouth and her soul poured out. She was not stingy;  she gave us everything she had.

that thing nobody tells you
you can study all you want and still do poorly.
there are people who procrastinate to the last second and still get top marks.
it’s frustrating and discouraging.
but you can’t change other people’s experiences, only your own.
so what can you do?
asides from talking with your teachers to see what they can suggest you improve on, you have to take a step back and analyze your approach.
it could very well have nothing to do with you, and it be a reflection of the teacher’s preferences, i know one english teacher in my school refuses to give out anything above a ninety.
it could be a learning disorder that’s gone undiagnosed, especially if you’re female (the typical criteria for diagnosis is based off of males)
it could just be an issue with the teaching styles that are commonly used, which in this case could mean you’d benefit from an IEP (individual education plan, at least in Canada)
there are so many things that could be affecting the way you learn that go unnoticed because of the education systems.
but sometimes it’s just you.
and that sucks when a lot of life seems to orbit around doing well in school.
not everyone is built for academics. some people spend their entire lives fighting to get into college or university because they feel it’s their only option, their only way to succeed, when they could thrive in skilled trades.
what i’m trying to say is, not everyone is academically minded, and i think in today’s society, that can be ignored. but, you’ll find a way to do what you love, or something you at least don’t hate. and, it shouldn’t matter if you aren’t the best student, in some situations it does which sucks, but you can find something that suits your strengths.
i know you can.
