You kept your head down as you weaved through the halls, avoiding everyone’s eyes. Newly presented, you were on blast despite the scent blockers you used. It doesn’t help that you were now one of the two male omegas in the school. You hoped and prayed that you’d present as a beta. Hell, you had damn near convinced yourself that you would. No matter how submissive and shy your nature was, male omegas were nearly unheard of. You had to be a beta. It was purely statistics. Now you knew that wasn’t true.
Your family hadn’t been surprised. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. Everyone held onto that hope that you were just a quiet-natured beta. It was too good to be true. The morning you woke up sweating and writhing, your room flooded with some scent your brain couldn’t even process, the dream was over. You were officially an omega. Your mother helped you through the heat, leaving you with damp rags to hold to your head and food every few hours. After a few days, it all subsided and you had to face your family. You barely could.
Your heart was pounding with your newfound label. Tied to a label that made you inferior in society, you knew your unfortunate social standing would only fall. Discrimination amongst the secondary sexes had lessened extremely over time, yes, but the lasting effect still lingered. Omegas were still the butt of many jokes. Despite the rallying and advancement of omega rights, there was a lasting social prejudice. Secondary sexes didn’t matter in your high school, unless you were unpopular. It was okay to be an omega if you already were accepted and outgoing, like Shizuku, another omega in the school. For you, it would only be an anchor pulling you down, another name to throw.
Your first few classes went without any bumps. Less than subtle whispering, but nothing you couldn’t handle. You hadn’t seen Shalnark or any of his buddies around yet and that was something you couldn’t be more thankful for. Who knew what new things they would come up with based off your omega status.
Lunch passed surprisingly without incident. You hadn’t seen any of them all day, a relieving occurrence. Sure, postponing their realization of your status by one day wouldn’t change much, but one more day of peace was something you would gladly take. All you had to do now was make it through the rest of your classes and get home, and you would have probably one of the best days you’ve had in a long time.
You spotted a head of blonde hair as you walked out of the school. He was leaning up against his car, his friends around him. You froze, sucking in a breath. You could do this. All you had to do was keep your head down and blend in with the crowd. The chances of him seeing you were low. You followed the masses to the buses, trying to shield yourself with the other students.
“Look who it is!” You heard a voice call out mockingly. You sighed. It was too good to be true. Of course he caught you. You kept walking, hoping he would just give up. “Where do you think you’re going?” Shalnark suddenly appeared, grabbing your shoulder. He gave you a lopsided grin before dragging you towards his car. You glanced back at the bus. Hopefully it wouldn’t leave before you got back.
Shalnark’s friends grunted in acknowledgement as you arrived. Phinks snickered at your dejected face.
“You were really gonna just ignore me?” Shalnark asked. He sounded like a hurt puppy. A manipulative, hurt puppy. You shook your head.
“I didn’t hear you.” You said quietly. That was complete bullshit, anyone could tell. Shalnark didn’t respond. His silence was confusing you. What was he doing? You looked up and noticed him sniffing the air. You began to shake. The scent blockers should help hold most of it in, but you couldn’t help the change in your scent that was noticeable. “I should go. I’m going to miss the bus.” You threw out the weak excuse. You were desperate for anything that would help you escape the situation. Shalnark put his hand up, a symbol to stop. Normally you’d roll your eyes at the demeaning gesture, but right now you were too nervous. You bunched up the hem of your shirt in your fingers, bouncing on the balls of your feet. Shalnark moved closer and closer to you, until he was right next to you. He smelled you and the realization hit him. His eyes went wide, his mouth open but voice faltered. You took that as your cue to run.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shalnark was being...weird. He’d been acting surprisingly nice lately. It was unnerving. You didn’t doubt for a second that it was because you were an omega; his subtle efforts to scent you and possessiveness were a dead giveaway.
“Need a ride home?” Shalnark pulled up next to you on the road while you waited to get on the bus. You shook your head, swaying from one foot to the other awkwardly. He scowled.
“Get in the car.” His aggressive tone spurred you to quickly get into the car. You cursed yourself the moment you heard the doors lock. Stupid obedience. Stupid alpha. You sat quietly, fidgeting with your fingers. You could feel him glancing at you every few seconds. The car ride was awkward and silent, until you quietly thanked him and left the car. As you walked into your house, you realized you never told him where you lived.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sighed and stood up. Sitting at the pool’s edge was proving to be as boring as you had expected, even while nodding your head to the muffled beat of the music blasting in the house. You could only be entertained by the occasional ripple for so long. You really had some hope for the night, despite your unwavering resistance to come to the party earlier, but it seemed to be worthless. You were alone and bored. Your friends dragged you to some party that they had heard about. Apparently it was supposed to be one of the biggest of the year and they were adamant on going. Reluctantly, you had agreed to go after much convincing only to be abandoned quickly.
You swirled your empty cup in your hand. Might as well get a refill, maybe head out after. You walked back into the house and began the journey of weaving through people to get to the kitchen. After a decent amount of pushing and one drunken asshole, you managed to find the counter and pour yourself another cup of whatever. You went to put the bottle back on the counter, but it was snatched out of your hand. After turning around to face the impatient jerk, you immediately froze. Shalnark’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you doing here?” His words were slurred but still understandable. He stumbled closer, and you could smell the alcohol on him. You wrinkled your nose, taking a step back.
“I came with some friends.” Some friends, yeah. Friends that disappeared in five minutes to God knows where.
“You weren’t invited.” Shalnark said. You raised an eyebrow. The majority of these people definitely hadn’t been invited.
“How do you know?” The alcohol was getting to you a bit. You were feeling snarky, tired of Shalnark’s interrogation and remarks. Who the hell was he to decide where you were allowed to be?
“I know because it’s my house, dumbass.” Oh. You bit your lip, cursing your friends. Had they not bothered to figure out whose house it was? Or was that information conveniently left out in their pleading?
“Oh uh, sorry. My friends wanted me to come. I can leave, though.” You turned to leave, embarrassed. You had finally stood up to him a bit, willing yourself to sarcasm, only to have it thrown back in your face. It was his house and he clearly didn’t want you here. It was only right to leave.
“Well, you might as well stay now.” Shalnark stepped closer and threw his arms around you, burying his head in your neck. You shivered as you felt him inhale deeply.
“I like your scent. You should stop using blockers.” He whined. He nuzzled his head against you. You were thrown off by the overload of affection. This hadn’t exactly been what you were expecting. Shalnark mumbled something into your skin, his hands beginning to wander. You tried to gently shake him off.
“What did you say?”
“You look good. Those pants really…” He trailed off, leaving his hand to finish his sentence by grabbing your ass. You stiffened. His tongue licked a stripe up your neck. You tried to push him off. He ignored your pitiful attempts at escape and pulled you into an empty room next to the kitchen. Your mind was racing. You didn’t want to do those things with Shalnark. Hell, you didn’t even want to be near him, but his grip on you was iron tight.
“You’re drunk. Let me go.” You tried to keep your voice steady, silently cursing the audible tremor. He seemed too lost in thought to even hear you. Or if he did, he was just choosing to not acknowledge it.
“So pretty, so delicate.” Shalnark murmured, continuing to brush along your body. You wiggled in his arms, hoping he would loosen his grip. He was whispering unintelligible compliments in your ear, but you ignored them. You tried to push at his chest and stretch back, your legs twisting. Shalnark groaned softly and you froze. You could feel something in his pants. You could feel it. You threw yourself against him, trying to make him lose his balance. You had to escape. However, for a drunk man, he was surprisingly sturdy.
“Stop it, stop fighting!” Shalnark gripped your wrists tightly.
“Little omega, you’re mine. No one else can have you. I won’t let them.” He growled. You shook your head desperately, your entire body trembling. Shalnark ignored you, holding your neck steadily. You thrashed against him as his intentions became clearer. It was futile; he had iron strength that kept your weak body in place. Tears ran down your cheek as you felt him bite deeply into your neck, claiming you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You’ve been avoiding Shalnark. It had been about a week since the party. You couldn’t face him. Everytime you thought about him, your hand would creep to your neck and trace the outline of the mark. You hated it. You hated him. He was beyond redeemable. Sure, you knew he was an obnoxious asshole but now you knew he was an entitled alpha prick who gave no shits about consent. He was the alpha you’ve been warned about your whole life. School had been a mess of taking back staircases, creeping through the halls, and running with reckless abandon anytime you even thought you saw him. You knew you couldn’t avoid him forever, but damn would you try.
“Y/n?” You snapped out of your thoughts. Your friend Mark looked at you, concerned. “Are you good?” You nodded. You hadn’t told anyone what happened yet. “Have you done the paper yet? I can’t stand…” Mark kept talking and you forced yourself to relax and listen. You’ve been on edge for the whole week and people were starting to notice. On top of that, you couldn’t let Shalnark control your life. The fear of him popping up at every corner had caused you to ignore your friends and stay mobile. A conversation couldn’t hurt. You really needed one.
You felt yourself relaxing as you talked. The two of you joked about the insane teacher and you found yourself laughing for the first time in who knows how long.
“Have you been avoiding me?” Shalnark scowled. You immediately tensed, cursing yourself for letting your guard down. You knew this would happen. You tried to ignore him, finishing the lame joke you were telling, but Mark gave no reaction. He was, fairly, focused on the annoyed man behind you.
“Get the fuck out of here.” Shalnark said, glaring at Mark. Mark glanced back between the two of you before nodding and running off. You couldn’t blame him.
“Why did you do that?”
“Why were you talking to him?” Shalnark shot back. You gave him a look.
“We’re friends.” Shalnark didn’t seem to like that answer.
“He just wants to fuck you.” Shalnark said, his voice turning disgusted. You rolled your eyes. Mark was nothing like that. You’ve known him for ages.
“Not everyone thinks with their dick.” You spat. Your fear was giving way to your irritation. You were so tired of him. Shalnark’s eyes flashed dangerously.
“Such an attitude.” He gritted out. You could sense the rage building in him. You weren’t safe here. You turned to leave, but Shalnark grabbed you and pushed you against the lockers. “Where do you think you’re going?” He mocked. Your breathing was unsteady and you looked around for anyone to help. There was no one. “Pretty wide eyes.” Shalnark gripped your jaw and forced you to look at him. “You should always be looking at me. You don’t need to see anything else.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You heard the door to the bathroom swing open and quickly held your breath. You tried to rub the tears from your eyes as you sat on top of the toilet, curled in a ball. Footsteps echoed in the room until the sound of banging on the stall door filled the room.
“I know you’re in there! Open the door.” Shalnark called out annoyedly. You could see him tapping his foot in impatience from under the door gap.
“What?” You croaked out, desperate for him to leave. Shalnark sighed and slammed on the door again. “Leave me alone!”
“Why are you being so difficult? I’m trying to be nice to you and you’re making it hard.” He said, his voice morphing into a low growl. Trying to be nice, yeah. Did he seriously believe that just a few days of politeness and wooing would make you forgive him? That it would make you forget the endless bruises and torment? That it would make you forget that he fucking forcibly claimed you? You haven’t had a single day of peace ever since he showed up.
“Yeah, because holding the door open and offering me a ride magically makes me forget the countless times you beat me. Oh yeah, and the daily reminder that I’m a fucking loser with nothing going for him? Oh, what about the fact that you fucking bit me!” You considered continuing, unleashing all the pent up hurt you had, but the angry rumbling behind the weak stall door made you go quiet. He could easily break the door. He could easily get in and take out all of that fury on you.
“Shut up! Just get over it! I fucking love you, who cares about all that?” Shalnark hissed. Maybe he should just break in here. He might be pissed enough to kill you and end this. After all, what else was left for you?
You laughed bitterly and opened the stall door.
“Don’t you see? You don’t love me. It’s just the fucking bond that makes you. You never would have loved me without it. You never would have wanted me if I wasn’t an omega.” A tear dropped down your cheek. He stared back at you.
“I-”
“No!” You cried out. You shook my head, sniffling. “You know I’m right.” You ran my hand through your hair and scoffed. “You hated me. You put me in the damn hospital! The only thing you like, you want with me is the bond and my fucking status.” Your voice faltered at the end, your choking sobs interrupting. Shalnark tried to reach out for you, but you recoiled immediately. “My mate...it was supposed to be someone who could love me, who I could trust. It wasn’t supposed to be you.”
You broke down finally, tears freely falling down your cheeks as the remnants of your shattered dreams passed through your mind. Smiles, carnival dates, falling in love, and dancing at 2am in your room. Any hope you had for love was broken now. Everything you could ever look forward to had been stolen from you. Shalnark wrapped his arms around you as you pounded your fists into his chest. His anger seemed to fade and he patted your back in an attempt at comfort. You sobbed into him and clutched the fabric of his shirt, wishing everything would just stop.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Huh, we all said once he found his mate you’d have to stop fucking with him, but I guess that doesn’t apply now.” Phinks mused. You kept your head down, mindlessly pushing the stale rice around the tray with your fork. Cafeteria food never spurred your appetite, and it certainly wasn’t going to now. Shalnark’s arm around you tightened and he used his free hand to, rather aggressively, ruffle your hair.
“As if that’ll ever happen.”
