Girls are like Apples
Like a shower, a T ride can be a thought provoking experience where one comes up with the craziest of ideas...
I lot of people I know would be delighted to take a big bite out of a juicy honey crisp apple, but not everyone in this world has the same preference. Some people may prefer green apples, apple that are sour tasting, or apples of particular shapes. Others may not even like apples at all.
Furthermore, we all have different ideas for what kind of apples we will eat and what apples we will not. After watching an apple hit the ground, some may simple discard the apple, others will wash it off and eat it, and still others will simply disregard the dust and enjoy the apple regardless.
Our preferences do not stop there. Depending on what we value the most, we will choose apples based on skin color, variety of apple, flavor profile, and maybe even if the apple has lost its stem yet. However, when it comes down to it, everything is based on availability. When apples are in season, tasty apples are abundant, and we will toss subpar apples aside to chase after the ones in pristine condition. On the other hand, when we’re sitting at our desks and hunger sets in, any apple from the fridge will do.
Now, I’m a guy that enjoys a crisp golden delicious apple. I have little preference for its appearance, as long as it seems edible. However, when I take a bite, I will judge harshly on flavor. The tricky thing is, can you really determine an apple’s flavor from its appearance? Have I been missing out on some delicious apples by being so closed minded about what kind of apples I will eat? Well, the truth is, the only apples i’ve tasted outside of what fits my narrow preferences are those that have been shoved in my mouth by others. The thing is, if you’re craving an apple, who wouldn’t bite on one that is hand fed to you?
One day, I’ll get around to finally devouring an apple to its core. It’ll be so good that I’ll take the time and effort to plant its seeds so that I will always have an apple tree to give me the joy that that apple blessed me with when I took the first bite.

Black male, early 20s
People judge people by their outer appearance because they feel comfortable doing so. It is convenient for one to be able to look at someone and be able to deduce some fundamental characteristics about them. One of the things I value most in a person is the ability to see past appearances.
Last night, I sat in Boston Common, a little past midnight. I was sitting on a bench, listening to a podcast while enjoying a view of the skyline. When I turned back around, I saw 3 guys walking toward me. Black male, early 20s, medium build, 5′ 10′, baggy clothing. It was a description that I had read about many times before. I’ve seen it in the news. I’ve seen it in the security alerts sent out by my old university. I’d heard it from my parents and grandparents. I guess i should have been scared, but I wasn’t. Instead of getting up and leaving, I said hi. One guy asked for a cigarette, and I happily gave him one.
P.S. I do not condone spending time alone in a park so late at night

9/17/2016: MBS Day 3
Growing up, my mom studied hard and did nothing but work to advance her career (she still does). So, naturally she was worried about how I continually chose video games over homework. She worried about how all the other asian kids worked so much harder than I, but my grandfather always assured her that maturity comes about at different ages for everyone. For my grandfather, it came about when he entered high school; for my mother, well, she must have been born with it...
I always figured that my time to bloom was in college, and by the end of my four years, I truly thought that I had matured all I would. However, as this program begins, I finally understand what my grandfather described as maturity. I have no problem putting in hours every day to learn the material I love, and I can finally exert the restraint that I’ve been missing my whole life. At this point, I’ve lost so much weight that none of my pants even fit anymore, and I’m on the last hole of my belt that i’ve owned for three years. In three days of class, I’ve accumulated more notes and spent more time studying that I can remember putting in for most courses at Case Western.
Hopefully I remember to check back in a few weeks. The part of me that wrote this post expects nothing but greatness, but the betting part of me is putting $100 on a caffeinated zombie that forgot to go to the gym for the last who knows when.

Technology
Sometimes I just look at my phone and think about it’s capabilities. My phone has the potential to educate me on any topic I want. It can entertain me for hours. I can communicate with friends on the other side of the country in the blink of an eye. I am a slave to my phone.
Gone are the days of asking mom to bring me to the library so I can find books to do research on the solar system. Now our children can pull up a wikipedia page and copy down information. There is no beauty in learning anymore. I distinctly remember the colorful pages of Jupiter that made me fall in love with science. I remember the hours I spent at the library picking out books from the young adult fiction section. But back to 2016. I can’t even remember the last time I read an awesome book from start to finish just for fun. My entertainment comes in the form of cute cats on Imgur and funny videos on YouTube. The imagination that used to bring scenes of intergalactic battles to life has now been left to rot.
The worst part of this all is that I don’t think I can go back. I gotten so accustomed to having everything done quickly that I hate reading. Why read a text book when you can find the condensed version on the powerpoint? Why go to the library to find the coolest novels when I can pull up flappy bird? I don’t even think I have the time for any of these things. Deadlines are hard and fast, and life moves much more quickly now.
I guess sometimes I just need to slow down and enjoy the real things in life.

Senior Project
There comes a time in a lot of people’s lives where you have to do some senior thesis...it sucks major butthole. As I’m writing this up, I remembered that I taught myself how to use matlab for this guy, and you know what? That was my favorite part of the project. I have no interest in this little machine I made. I have no interest in what it could possibly be used for. I don’t even like explaining what it does because I just don’t care about it.
I got suckered into this project so hard/I guess it’s my fault for not letting my advisor know this...
