A bit of a shock seeing this float across my dash— I used to work as an educator and behind the scenes guide at Mystic and this was one of my favorite exhibits! There were also American Paddlefish in the exhibit! The loose theme of the educational material around the viewing window had to do with ancient fishes, it taught visitors about the sturgeon’s scutes and the electro-reception of the paddlefish’s elongated rostrum. According to the species list on their website they are both Lake and Atlantic Sturgeon, Spotted, Longnose and Alligator Gar, and the aforementioned Paddlefish (love them!)

The aquarium itself was decorated to resemble a boulder strewn riverbed or lake bottom. The lighting was like late summer sun streaming through trees into the water…quite lovely and the gar looked AMAZING looming out of the shadows.

It was many many years ago, and i’ve forgotten a lot of the information. I remember they enjoyed some of the coldest water in the aquarium. Their diet was like most of the other big fish— chunks of herring, capelin, squid. The paddlefish enjoyed shrimp if I remember correctly.
