every time I get an email from ao3 telling me somebody left a comment on one of my fics, every time I see that somebody reblogged something I wrote on tumblr, my day improves instantly. every time it makes me feel that I want to keep going. so I just want to say this to all of you who comment and reblog: I hope you know how important you are.
stories, art, meta -- those things aren't created in a vacuum. they are part of an ongoing conversation between the material, the fic/meta writers and artists, and the people who interact with what they read and see. and that's not just true for art and all forms of writing. the whole world is a big, intertextual web made of billions of voices. we react to each other and that's how we create community and art.
every time you react to something you've enjoyed, you contribute to that conversation. every time you do that in a positive way, you tell the writer or artist "I hear you and I care enough to respond." even if it's nothing more than "I love this." it means artists and writers know their voices aren't just being swallowed up by the great big void. it encourages people to keep expressing their takes on the conversation that is art and writing. it means we all get to have more of it.
all of this to say: commenters and rebloggers, you are superstars. thank you. I love you.

Do you have any headcannon on Peh yah or Pah chin
Cause their my favorite duo even do they get very little screen time
I love them
Yeah I have a few, here they are!
Tumblr media
Peh is jealous of Pochi
They have a secret high five and handshake routine
Peh used to third wheel Yumi and Pah a lot on their dates. Until he officially started dating Yasuda, then they all went on double dates.
Both of their families basically treat them like second sons
Peh always cheers very loudly for Pah during his arm wrestling matches
They always put in a lot of effort of each other's birthdays
Pah brought up Peh's bad letter writing to him when he eventually got out
They clung to each other even more after Yumi was forced to move away when they were kids. Knowing that they could also be forced to leave at some point, it made them cling to each other harder.
They often talk and debate about the silliest scenarios
As kids they would occasionally try to study together but it never went well as they always got distracted.
Peh tried to give Pah an encouraging speech before his wedding
They will throw hands with anyone who says the third division isn't the best division
In the good timeline their estate business is very successful
Peh has to help out a lot at home, Pah will sometimes help out with this.
They cried during their reunion after Pah got released

"Just Write For Yourself"
I think the thing that gets to me the most about the whole "just write for yourself!" response to writers complaining the lack of engagement in fanfic, is that it makes me realize that there's a fundamental misunderstanding between writers and readers of how much work writing fic is.
Like, there are 2-3 scenes in any given oneshot or chapter that I want to write. I usually write those first. They'll take me a couple of, very enjoyable, hours at most.
And then I have to go back and write the whole rest of the fic. Which is work. And it's usually not immediately enjoyable.
For example, one of my best fics on AO3 is a Star Trek fanfic called Rascal'ed. This was one of the fics that was easiest for me to write, one of the ones that just possesses you until it's done. It took me less than five days to create.
And I still had to go back in and fill in blank spots and cut bad prose and revise the dialogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want to see what a difficult fic to write looks like, like my fic Leap of Faith, here's what I do for my stories that I actually plan out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's just the planning. I still have to write the damn thing. And there are things in the above layout—which is just for Chapter 1, mind—that got changed between this and the final published version of the chapter. You can see that the title of the story itself was changed at some point.
So when people say, "write for yourself, not for engagement!" What I personally hear is: "I as a reader do not understand how much work writers put into getting a story into a publishable form, and I also do not realize how easy it would be for them to write the couple of scenes they enjoyed writing and then to let it sit forever in their drafts."
Tumblr media
(Of these eight fics—averaging more than 20 pages each—only two of them ever made it to AO3. The rest remain unfinished and unpublished.)
And for the record: I, personally, have wonderful readers. Kind, attentive readers who leave me comments engaging with the work. And it's because of them that I continue to publish stories! Like, I don't want to sound like sour grapes here, because I know that I get way more comments than many great writers out there.
But I've seen, across the board, writers trying to express that they are just not getting the engagement that they desire and expect for the work they put in, and people responding with "you shouldn't expect engagement; just write for yourself."
And the thing is, I know they're not trying to be rude. I know that! Of course they don't know how hard we work, who would have ever told them? We can't blame them for not knowing what they've never been told. Which is why I just felt the need to get out here and say:
Writing fics takes a lot of work. A lot of work. Hours upon hours of unpaid labor. Any fic that you see on AO3 or Fanfiction.net or Wattpad, is not something someone wrote solely for themselves. They could have just daydreamed about it, or written a couple of scenes and then left it unfinished. But they chose to put in the hard work it took to finish it. Because they wanted other people to read and engage with it.
Please engage with it.
Because if all fic writers ever hear is "you should just write for yourself"—we might start believing it.

thinking about how the only time bobby and cas interact in season four is when he knocks him out cold to talk to dean alone. and the next time bobby sees him, cas is powerless and just comes to steal dean's necklace in a weird interaction that had to be filmed close-up because dean and cas are just inches from each other's face. the next time is an offscreen interaction where he just gets dean's address from bobby and probably left immediately after. combine this with the fact that bobby knew dean had a male siren the season before (and tried to be supportive) and let cas be in the family photo a few episodes later, there is a nonzero chance bobby singer was the first destiel shipper.

It's been over a decade since the episode aired, but I'm still frothing at the mouth over the fact that Dean could have kept Cas's trench coat in the Impala easily, but he deliberately made space available for it in each car the Winchesters had in season 7. They were extremely limited in what they could take with them to each vehicle, but Dean made sure that coat was with him always, on the off-chance that he would, somehow, see Cas again and get to return it.
