Final works for the summative presentation
Final positioning statement:
"Escapism", defined as the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024), is a comic store located on Nuffield Street designed to invite the community to come together with an interest in escaping reality and immersing themselves in another world that contrasts with the everyday life of Nuffield Street, dedicated to reading and experiencing the creative process behind comic books.
The interior and exterior are designed to contrast to create a transition from Nuffield Street to another world. The shopfront follows a more simple and sleek look to fit with the commercial architecture of Newmarket, featuring panel-like windows of different sizes that guide you from one window to another leading to the entrance of the store where there is a revolving bookshelf, enhancing the store's welcoming atmosphere and sparking intrigue while also symbolizing the act of transporting from reality and entering another world. The interior design combines classic, vintage style with fun interactive elements such as the revolving bookshelves, adjustable tables and suspended display stands, encouraging people to explore and interact to create an immersive experience that connects them to a space different from reality.
The red-bricked walls and dark wooden panelling, combined with the brass tabletops and suede leather seating, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, combined with the illumination of the spotlights that brings out the material's rich texture. As a homage to the site's history, textured wood panelings and muted greens are incorporated into the design inspired by the Sacred Cabbage tree, connecting the modern space to its historical roots. The space layout is designed to be open allowing people to explore the space naturally. The space features two reading spaces filled with an extensive collection of comics, allowing you to fully immerse in reading, a workshop filled with the tools and resources dedicated to anyone interested in producing their own comic and learning the creative process behind it, an exhibition space displaying the works created from the workshop. And a retail space selling the exhibited works.
Escapism not only provides a safe space for those needing a temporary escape from reality. It's a community hub that fosters creatvity, providing a workshop with creative freedom to self express, open to anyone of the community, regardless of their experience, to step out, publish and exhibit their own comic book. By providing a safe space for creativity, this workshop can inspire and encourage individuals to experiment and explore with their ideas and discover hidden passion for storytelling and art leading to innovative and unique works that can be appreciated by the community.

Developed site analysis
Following the visual style of the other drawings, I added contour lines, located where the kiosk will be placed. And making it more clear where the 2 sites are with annoated renders.

Week 12
Developed measured drawings
I added orange text and enhanced textures to the drawings to align with the visual style of the red brick in the renders and rustic look of the storyboard, ensuring certain texts stand out. Additionally I've added site context to the floor plan, including the curved pedestrian footpath and the contour line of the sloped ground on Balm street. I also adjusted the roof of the section plan to a saw tooth design and added surrounding buildings in the background for site context.

The interior and exterior are designed to contrast with each other to create a sensory shift from Nuffield Street to another world. With the shopfront following a more simple and sleek look to fit with the architectural design of Nuffield Street, featuring panel-like windows of different sizes that guide you from one window to another leading to the entrance of the store where there is a revolving bookshelf that guides you into the store, enhancing the store’s welcoming atmosphere and sparking intrigue while also symbolizing the act of leaving reality and entering another world. The interior design merges classic, vintage-style with fun interactive elements such as the revolving bookshelves, adjustable tables and suspended display stands, enhancing visual intrigue and encouraging exploration, making you feel more connected to the space, creating the immersive experience that feels distinct and separated from reality.
The red-bricked walls and dark wooden paneling, complemented by brass tabletops and suede leather seating, create a warm and inviting atmosphere that is further enhanced by the spotlights that highlight the rich textures and colors of the materials, adding depth and visual interest to the space. This combination fosters a cozy environment that encourages relaxation and social interaction, making the overall experience even more engaging. As a homage to the site’s history, the textured wood panelings and muted greens were incorporated into the design inspired by the Sacred Cabbage tree, connecting the modern space to its historical roots.  The layout of the space is designed to be open and naturally guides movement that encourages you to explore rather than moving in a rigid straight line. The space features two reading spaces filled with a large collection of comics allowing you to fully immerse in reading, a workshop dedicated for anyone interested in producing their own comic and learning the creative process behind it, an exhibition space displaying the works produced from the workshop. And a retail space selling the displayed works.
Escapism not only provides a space for those needing a temporary escape from reality but it also offers a workshop with creative freedom, allowing anyone of the community, regardless of their experience, to step out, publish and exhibit their own comic book. By nurturing creativity, this workshop can help individuals discover hidden passion for storytelling and art, inspiring them to continue exploring their interests

Showing more of the function and details of the revolving bookshelf and adjustable table, showing it in the renders and drawings
The protruding roof on the Nuffield Street side will not work as there is a exisiting building blocking it
Visual narrative. Each image should contribute to the overall project narrative. Consider carefully what each image is communicating
Paying more attention to brand and identity
Balm Street is sloped, add ground lines and site context to site plan/floor plan, site analysis.
Keep a consistent visual style between the different drawing
Keeping the design concept short and clear, about 1-2 sentences max

Week 10
Preparing for the formative 2 presentation
Draft positioning statement:
“Escapism”, defined as a tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy (Oxford English Dictionary, 2024)., is a graphic novel store located on Nuffield Street in the heart of Newmarket. It aims to invite the community together with an interest in escaping reality and immersing themselves in another world that contrasts with the everyday life of Nuffield Street with its classical and vintage-style like space incorporated with fun interactive installations. It provides user’s the experience/programme of not only immersing themselves in the large collection of graphic novels but also the creative freedom of producing their own personal graphic novels, with the options to exhibit, publish and sell them in the store.
Walking by the store, you are introduced to a storefront that resembles a large comic page, featuring panel-like windows and walls inspired by the grid patterns and panels of comic gutter. As you glance through the windows inside, you can see people engaged in various activities of walking by, reaching for the shelves, reading or working in the workshop, much like reading through panels of a story, inviting curiosity. A revolving bookshelf is placed at the entrances of the shop enhancing the store’s welcoming atmosphere and sparking intrigue to the people outside. As you push through the revolving shelf and step into the store, it is as if you are opening a page of a graphic novel and transitioning into a new space, becoming a part of the story. Upon entering the store, you are presented to a space that is very different to the modern and minimalist aesthetic of Nuffield Street, which is a classical, vintage-style interior design featuring rich textures and eclectic furniture. At the entrance, you are first greeted by the retail space displaying the works of local communities and a mini reading space. Turning left brings you to the main reading area consisting of a curved seating bench with adjustable tables suspended to the ceiling and a large bookshelf. Following the curved pathway brings you to the workshop, where users can dedicate themselves in the experience of producing their own graphic novels. Another turn will take you to the exhibition area with suspended display stands showcasing the works produced from the workshop and walking forward will lead you back to the retail space selling the works of the displayed works.
The thought process behind this graphic novel store was to design a space that is immersive and interactive that gives the comic lovers not only a space to dedicate in reading but also encourages them to hand on hand engage in the experience of producing their own graphic novel and learning the creation process to appreciate and embrace the artistry and effort that goes into making graphic novels from storytelling to illustration.fostering community connection.
As a homage to the site’s history, the design incorporates materials and colours inspired by the Sacred Cabbage tree, connecting the modern space to its historical roots. And incorporated with the classic vintage style of natural materials and rich textures showcasing history and character, evoke warmth and nostalgia, creating a cozy atmosphere

Reflection + new step
After some reflection on the new design, I've identified some issues in the spaces that need to be addressed. Such as the books possibly falling off when the revolving bookshelf is moving. Additionally, the wires of the suspended stands aren’t visible in the renders, making the displays appear to be floating.
My next steps are to add railings to the revolving bookshelf to prevent books from falling when the shelves are being rotated. Make the wires of the suspended display stands thicker to allow it to stand out more in my renders. As well as adjusting the material texture of the curved shelf for a more natural look. And removing a few books on the revolving shelves by the entrances to create a clearer view into the shop from outside.

Further developed interior/exterior space
For the developed interior/exterior design, I've added ambiance lighting in the interior spaces to highlight the rich texture of the materials, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I added a front-face illuminated shop signage to the shopfront entrances to match with the sleek look and debossed signage to the retail counter to follow the classic, vintage style of the interior space. In addition to changing the material of the kiosk's roof from glass to dark pine wood and adding a sliding door track to make it more functional for the tambour sliding door. I've also come up with a opening hours for my shop to be:
Monday - Friday: 9:00am - 8:00pm
Saturday - Sunday- 10:30am - 8:30pm

Week 9
Kiosk - Developed design
I've adjusted the kiosk's signage to be smaller and more in line with the visual language of my shopfront as well as thinking of how the kiosk will look like when closed by integrating wooden sliding tambour doors on both sides of the entrances, along with a roller shutter for the payment window. I've also established the opening hours for my kiosk to be:
Monday - Saturday: 11:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday- Closed
