I’ve watched “Onegin” (1999) – you know British-American interpretation of Russian classic. Well, I have to elaborate – it’s not the same case as with “War and Peace” – I do like “Eugene Onegin”: the poetry is just amazingly great, the plot is nice and there are no misogynic reasonings (taking the time of writing into account). What I don’t like are articles about Tatyana and “Russian women”, especially one by F.M. Dostoyevsky… Well, not about it today. The movie – I like it. It’s very beautiful – all that landscapes and background music (I even recognized a Russian folk song which was playing at the time when Tatyana was writing her letter), the atmosphere (dresses, furniture and other material stuff) was quite authentic, though I can’t tell you if it was historically accurate or not (actually it’s not very important). The actors are good, I especially enjoyed Ralph Fiennes. His nose and hair suit him a lot! (It was a joke about Lord Voldemort, which he played.) Lensky was very sweet (I’m not familiar with the actor – Toby Stephens) and (Spoilers! In case somebody didn’t read the poem) the duel scene was so tensed and emotional! And so is the ending scene, when Onegin and Tatyana cry together. I also liked that Tatyana’s husband is a quite handsome noble man, not visibly older than Eugene: there is a strange idea, that he’s very old, even though in the poem itself is written that Onegin and husband are relatives and friends and their ages are not very different:
“Her husband enters, thus arresting
This most unpleasant tete-a-tete;
Eugene and he recalled the jesting,
The pranks and fun when first they’d met”
(translation by James E. Falen) - They were “having fun” together, people of very different age don’t usually do that, especially at that time. Also, I’ve found a few interesting things while researching a little in English about Onegin: 1. There is a Canadian musical by the same name (a bootleg of which I can’t find, if you have one – send me a link, please). 2. There are at least two translations of it and they both are pretty good and the metre sounds close to the original. So, I enjoyed all that a lot watching it was a good thing to do after a Marvel rewatch.
