DONE! DreamTeam! #FinalCrit
Sunday, May 14 2017
Finally we finished our rocking airplane!! it rocks! and the propeller can spin!!
I’m so proud of our work.

After that we spent quite some time painting the edge of the rocking airplane.

Our initials engraved on the propeller! <3

The Making
May 9-May 14
Final project was approaching and we had less than a week to make our rocking airplane! A lot of sbp file making, a lot of CNC cut

Because cnc bed was not big enough (The body and rocker were around 40″ long), we need to cut half of them and put them together using biscuit, dowel join, and wood glue.

And a lot of TEAMWORK <3
clamping parts together after putting glue on

Screwed some parts together

grabbing some food after hard work

Using CNC machine and project X reveal!
Once we finalized our rocking airplane model, we transformed the file in to 3d using fusion 360 and then we prepared the file for CNC machine.

Now it’s time for cutting the piece!

After the class we prepared the rest of the files and we plan to cut them and assemble the pieces soon.
Moving on to my project
I’m making an AUTOMATA
“Automata” is a self-operating machine, or a machine or control mechanism designed to automatically follow a predetermined sequence of operations.
From my last post, you probably saw the shark automaton. I am trying to make my piece with similar mechanism. I’m working on crafting the story and designing the piece right now. We’ll see how it goes. :)

Flat Pack! and another project X
Apr 17-19-24, 2017
From last class, We made many rocking planes model but we didn’t think about how to manufacture or ship it so this time we made some adjustment. We added slots which each part could fit in so that the plane can be assembled without glue.

Below is the latest iteration

Additional to the rocking plane, I’m also working on another final project. I have always been interested in moving mechanism of automata. Below is 3-D printed shark automata which I got the file from Thingiverse.com. I 3-D printed it to study the mechanism which I will further adapt to use in my final project.

Having fun with furniture model
April 5, 2017
Today is a showcase of our works.
The chair on the right side was made of hand-cut cardboard and the table and another were made from laser-cut cardboard.

Some of the works I made the night before class. My friend, Jay, kept me company that night and made an amazing beauty and the beast models!

There are many cool pieces made by my classmates that day.

Making furniture model
April 3, 2017
Last week and this week, we have been working on making different furniture models from cardboard. These are some of models I made from my sketch.

Furniture sketch and wood workshop
Mar 20, 2017
We got assignment to draw furniture sketches and these are my drawing.

In class we learn about different types of wood such as pile wood and lumber and how to work with them. We also had table saw, miter saw, and track saw workshop.

The tapper presentation and RISD museum trip
Mar 19,2017
We had presentation of the tapper today.
These are how they looks like.
The smaller one is the tapper and larger one is the receiver.

We also made a vdo of how it works and the context in which it will be used.
We went to RISD museum today and spent some time observing and sketching Buddha image.
1st sketch: learn to use basic shape to make sketch

2nd sketch: give more weight to the sketch

3rd sketch: learn to draw from inside out so that the sketch looks more natural

Last sketch

Furniture sketch
Mar 13, 2017
Today we went to Sci-li and sketched some furniture and people in different postures.
I’ve never noticed before that there are many different shapes of chairs and tables in scili. These are some of my sketches.
Shell shaped chair - very comfortable for the laid back but not so good for working.

Traditional table and chair for working

Different postures I observed from students

Some observations I got

The Tapper critique session
Feb 27, 2017

After getting feedback from Ian and classmates, we discussed and we finally decide to build 2 version of the tapper. One is based on realistic usage in the next 5 years and another one we intend to question the form of currency.

Arduino
Feb 22, 2017
Today’s class we learned how to code, connect, and play with Arduino!
We did the basic things such as how to make LED blink. I really enjoyed playing with it.

Critique and idea idea refinement
Wednesday Feb 15, 2017 We, a group of 4 people: Alex, Ben, Leah, and me, presented the idea and 1st prototype to Ian and the class and received many good feedback.
Thinking Process
We stepped back and think deeper about this thing in a critical thinking way
- We thought about why the wallet has to be in square shape - because the bill needs to fit in - but in the future if there’s no bill anymore why the wallet has to be in a square shape
- why does money exist? what’s the purpose of money?
- We thought about how we spend money in different situations nowadays such as in restaurant, and how this new device might be used in the future
Then each of us started drawing our own design, shared it to one another and discuss what we like and don’t like.
This is the drawing of my design

After we discussed about the project, this is how the prototype looked like

In the next class, we will learn how to use arduino (https://www.arduino.cc/) and think about how to integrate it into the project.

5 years from now - Critical Design
This week topic is critical design. The topic we were given is "Imagine that you live 5 years in the future, and that you have the ability to travel back in time to the present moment to share a designed object from 2021, what will you bring back?”
This is first Iteration of “Smart Wallet”

The concept of this idea is that nowadays we have different identities and acts differently in different context. At school, we are student, at work we are employee, at home we are mom/dad, in basketball club we are members of the team and on social media we also have different identity. Combining with the trend of using less and less cash and going toward electronic money, we think that in 5 years, there could be a smart wallet that represent these two ideas.

There are screens at the back and in the wallet which we can choose what identity we will show and we could exchange information of our identities with others (of course we can customize what we want to share). We assume that in the next 5 years, people will still use cash so we still have the pockets for bill. We also has slots for cards such as driving license, debit, credit but everything can be scanned into the wallet and we can just use this wallet and tap at the sensor to pay for things that we buy.
This also includes discount, access to building, and special privilege for each identity, all in one wallet.

Play time, Game time!
We went to the school again to test the toys.

Kids also made their own games and we began playing their game first. This is the game that Ben made. It’s a racing game. How to play is to roll the rice and we move the player according point shown on the dice. You will see that there are only 2 lanes but Eshel wanted to join us so he play on the invisible lane. Ben and I lost the game but it seemed like the losers would won the invisible game.

And after that is the time to play my game! The rule is similar to mancala but the difference is that the player chose their one (or more) country(s) they want to be and then they when they drop marbles onto their countries, they will get the point.

While playing I noticed things that could be improved
- the route was not clear so children were confused where to go next so I drew a line but they didn’t seem to follow so I think that I could make another iteration with random or optional route
- make more slot so that many kids can play together
- The board was made so that children can draw their own map and put in the middle layer but I forgot to let them draw the map. Top and bottom layer will be connected by magnet for next iteration
- I want to make it more 3D, and add surprise to it
My game was not in the critique session because we don’t have enough time but I’d love more feedback to improve it.

These are alien and cyclinder basker that I 3-D printed and intended to use in the game but I could not make it in time.

Me holding the board upside down and Ben.
It was an amazing time. I learned a lot and wish that we could have more time.

Prototype and iteration
After I got back from Jewish Community Day School of RI, I have been thinking about how to make a better toy for Ben. From my experience playing with him, I’ve learned that he like playing Mancala, marbles, coloring, learning new things and he also like when there’s a surprise in the game.

- draft of idea -
I try to combine what I learned from him and the games that I played with him which finally resulted in the Mancala and global-map board game. In class, I made a prototype from cardboard.

I try playing with it to see whether I can use the same rule as Mancala. The rule is a little bit tricky and take sometime to finalize. During the Process, friends and professor also gave some good advices for me to improve the game
Iteration
I iterate the prototype using illustrator to make a file and laser cutter it. It was my first time using laser cutter and I’m totally amazed by what it can do!

The result looked a lot better than the 1st version. In the next post, I will show you my result! ;)
