I think part of what kills me about Monstrosity and DR is the fact that Kai clearly feels the need to hide everything that happened to him. He was just traveling the merge lands. He was just on some island. Nope, nothing too crazy.

Even when he’s suffered so much, he’s still worrying about others, about losing them all over again when they find out what he had to do to survive. He may have escaped. He may have lived. But his fear remains. Because not every monster was defeated. He’s still there. And nothing scares him more than losing the people he did it all for. Even if that means actively lying to them and actively hiding from them. Anything to prevent losing them again. Because he can’t handle the idea that he became something so unloveable he’d lose them all over again.
