thinking about skye penderwick studying astrophysics in california……skye being away from her family for the first time. everyone so proud of her and so happy for her, thinking she’ll finally have the space to be who she is. skye finding that that space she dreamed of is maybe more lonely than she thought. her family doesn’t call much because they don’t want to bother her, only with the exception of ben, who needs skye’s advice on the science of his sci-fi film ideas (at first he went to iantha for this, but found her answers lacking excitement, as she’s bored of most action in movies. skye on the other hand is happy to hear about his space battles and explosions and stuff). skye never tells ben but sometimes it’s the highlight of her week.
but skye being so thrilled to study uninterrupted. staying up all night when she’s in the zone. i bet she gets adopted by multiple kind roomates over the years who sort of take her in like a stray cat, leaving food by her door when they learn her habits of working so long and forgetting to eat. i bet she meets friends who help her chill out. i bet she goes out just to end up in a drunken heated debate over dark matter theories or something nerdy like that with her academic rivals. she finds new things she loves: bands, fashion, maybe she tries out other pronouns. skye finding themself a little.
jeffery visits and they go to the symphony. i bet they play something by saint-saens and skye is actually kind of moved by it. they walk out and she grabs jeffery by the shoulders like, dude, i think i get it. why you’re obsessed with music. that made me feel something like i feel stargazing. jeffery grins and they hug and there’s so much love and it’s not the slightest bit romantic.
visiting home around christmas skye asks jane to cut their hair. jane is simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to mess it up. it ends in skye yelling JUST CUT IT OFF and it’s the middle of the night and it wakes everyone up. it looks terrible but iantha is able to patch it up a bit.
skye continues to tutor other students and becomes really well respected as a knowledgeable effective teacher. she has a good community.
maybe even including some european man. but they don’t get married lmao

when mrs. tifton is being cruel and skye looks batty in the eyes and tells batty she’s not crazy, she’s perfect. and when jeffrey takes skye to see the moose at point mouette and skye wishes batty were there to see them. 🥹

this might be. unpopular. idk. but i've noticed that iantha's character in gardam street is just. kind of really flat. and i can't unsee it now.
it's an unfortunate situation because the role iantha has to play in gardam street is to be the perfect mother/wife to all four sisters/martin, and the story doesn't work as smoothly if she isn't. but because of this she ends up basically not existing as a person if it isn't in relation to the other characters. she's an astrophysicist because skye likes astrophysics, she has a husband who died in an accident so she can be single with a kid and not be judged for it, she has a kid at all so she can befriend batty and be more interesting to the rest of the characters, she has a name that means purple flower in ancient greek so martin can be a nerd about it, etc etc. everything she does has to happen so that rosalind can have her realization at the end that she wouldn't mind having a step mom if it's iantha because iantha is perfect. the result is that (to me) it almost feels like she just doesn't have a personality, like her personality is whatever it needs to be in any given scene based on what is happening at that moment. because she has to be perfect for every other character, she can't exist as herself.
#the result is that it just feels kind of misogynistic to me#like iantha's whole value is as a wife and mother and not as just. herself. which i'm sure isn't intentional but is just kind of unfortunat#weird because normally jeanne birdsall is good at writing complex female characters#also iantha does feel at least a little more fleshed out in in spring though we don't see her much and that might just be me#(also also the convenience of her husband dying in a car crash does kind of rub me the wrong way esp considering everything else#like would she still be respected as a character if he had left her when she got pregnant or they had gotten divorced or whatever#like in particular if they had never been married would the book still be ok with that#or even seriously together or if she decided to have ben by herself on purpose)#the penderwicks#iantha aaronson penderwick

Jeffrey: I’m quick at math. Skye: Ok, what’s 38 times 76? Jeffrey: 24. Skye: That wasn’t even close. Jeffrey: But it was quick.
#honestly yeah#like i kinda wish at last would've given us them being friends again#i think it tells us that they are?#but bc we don't get skyes perspective + the book is focused on other things we don't really see it#idk i remember particularly missing getting to see skye and jane and jeffrey being friends in in spring when i first read it#and while i think it makes sense for that specific book to not show it#i do wish that at last went back and showed those characters being friends again#idk

jeffrey choosing to teach batty taps is so fucking funny esp since as someone who did orchestra + some band in school it seems like almost everyone at least in the us learns hot cross buns as one of their first songs. one of the easiest songs to play ever and it is permanently ingrained into my brain. like did he just learn music by himself why??? did he pick taps??? and not hot cross buns or literally anything else??? like taps might actually be harder for someone starting to pick up considering the rests but idk for sure
#also maybe kinda sad considering jeffrey's background and him being expected to go to military school + become a general#my mom's jeanne birdsall doesn't actually know that much about music theory kinda makes sense#jeffrey tifton mcgrath#batty penderwick#the penderwicks#the penderwicks at point mouette

rereading point mouette as an adult is so funny cause as a kid any attempts at foreshadowing completely went over my head and all of a sudden i can see it and it's like every other page
#alec had brown hair that always seemed to stick up and freckles. uh huh i wonder who else is always described like that#“alec seems like he could have a kid our age i wish he did” said jane. sure#no one knows who jeffery's dad is but he must have gotten all his good qualities especially the playing music bit from his dad cause it#wasn't ms tifton. ok#something about alecs face seemed familiar to skye. YEP.#this isn't an insult to the books more to a maybe even 15 year old me who could not see any sort of subtext or metaphor or anything to#save his life#foreshadowing is a legitimate plot device and this is a book for children so good job jeanne birdsall#the penderwicks#the penderwicks at point mouette#jeffrey tifton mcgrath

i dunno how many people read the penderwicks but sometimes i think about that ending (which is a very little women ending but like. bad.) and get soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo upset why'd the author do that.
#literally can't stop thinking about it lmao#THE worst possible ending at least for skye#not great for the rest of the characters either

the foreshadowing of jeffrey and batty's relationship in at last throughout the first 4 books makes my head explode Why did you have to remind me right after talking about how good of friends they are please i want to pretend it doesn't exist and you are making it so difficult

it's probably not what jeanne birdsall intended when she wrote in spring but how can i not interpret nick's immediate realization of who oliver was + dislike of him as him having a particularly shitty film bro ex boyfriend
#oliver is. a walking stereotype but no one else other than martin realized he was shitty immeditely#and martin realized because of claire's shitty ex boyfriend#also nick knew what oliver was talking about well enough to try to piss him off intentionally + snark about him to batty later#the penderwicks#nick geiger

i’m happy that at last ended with only the suggestion of batty and jeffrey so that i can continue believing that wesley and batty run into each other in a couple years and end up back together

Tbh the reason I ship Skyffrey is because I relate to Skye so strongly and I really want my own Jeffrey. I might not be able to have him, but she could take the opportunity for the both of us.

Having another one of those urges to rewrite the entire final book in a series that I started reading at the appropriate age but that destroyed my life as an adult because it ended WRONG and I am BITTER about it and there is a part of me that will never rest until things are set RIGHT.
No, I do not care that it's a middle grade series.
I WAS ROBBED AND I WILL NOT GO GENTLY INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT.
