Beneath the Tangles Prayer Group | April 29 - May 5 Prayer Requests
Here are our prayer items for the week:
29 - Pray that Christian voice actors will be good witnesses to the industry and their fans, and find spiritual support in their struggles. Our Christian friends in the voice acting community include Caitlin Glass, Luci Christian, Jordan Dash Cruz, Kelsey Maher, and Amanda Gish.
30 - We want to envision big things, including a ministry that shakes down walls for Christ across the vast space of the anime fandom. Pray that fans will think of Jesus when they think of anime, and may BtT be a way in which God makes miraculous things happen in this sphere.
1 - We are sending a missionary out for the first time! Pray for a hedge of protection, open opportunities to share the gospel, that financial needs are met for Uvie as she and her sister both attend Anime Expo, and for the entire Jesus Otaku team with whom they’ll be joining.
2 - We’ve started our first ever art contest this month! Please pray that this will be means to connect with artists in the anime community and that it will help us build the kingdom as we move into more creative arts!
3 - Request Day! Reply with your own prayer request and we’ll pray for it as a community.
4 - Pray for wisdom for Twwk. Pray that as he leads Beneath the Tangles, he is filled with graciousness, and is obedient to Christ.
5 - Pray for wisdom and discernment for Mecahawk and Lenlenkai as they lead our small group, and for Kendall in his role of our team builder and small group overseer.

Statedogg is back! We’re happy to post the very first episode of a new podcast featuring Mike of Mike’s Geek World and formerly of the Tangle x Cast. When the team ended their run last year, they moved onto other projects—Kyuubikaze is taking a break from BtT as he endeavors onto new challenges in his life, Dennis continues to be our engineer for new podcasts, Paris and Eryn plan to launch a podcast this winter, and Mike is starting the “Power of God and Anime” podcast. In today’s introductory episode, he chats about Akira Toriyama’s passing, Evangelion and a holy fatherhood, and more. He also gives his first trivia question—feel free to drop your response after you listen to the episode!
Anime Trivia!
In the Dragon Ball anime, how old is Bulma when the series begins?
Podcast Notes
We’ve written a ton of Evangelion articles (go figure), including this one about Gendo Ikari. If you want to stream the series, it’s currently available on Netflix.
After you’re done listening to Mike’s version, listen to the original “When God Ran” by Phillips, Craig, & Dean.
Bible verses we mentioned or that inspired discussion in this episode include James 1:2-3, 2 Corinthians 7:10, and Luke 15:11-32.
Check out more from Mike on YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram!
You can subscribe and listen to us on a variety of platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud, Amazon Music, and others. Please subscribe and leave us a review!
Featuring copyright-free music (license code 9OFBY6IDSRWODYKF) from Uppbeat (“Funk Tank by Soudnroll), and edited by Dennis.

A Tale of Two Alchemists, II: The Brotherhood of Everything

“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. We put all our trust in alchemy, but in the end…what is it?” In the episode “Rain of Sorrows” in FMA:B, Edward Elric shows himself to be a very different man than his FMA incarnation. Lost in regret rather than horrified denial, he confesses his doubts about alchemy, the Potteresque science/magic at the center of his world. “Alchemy,” he says, “is the science of understanding the flow of matter and its laws. The process of comprehension, deconstruction, and reconstruction. The world flows too. It must also follow laws.”
Alchemy is reliable knowledge. Alchemy is science-based power. But deep down, Edward’s alchemy was actually a quest for the scientifically impossible. Under the rain, he confesses his immaturity, his foolishness, his contradictions. Ed, whose core ideology at this point is scientific humanism and rebellious atheism, is conflicted. He wants to put all his hopes in science-guided humanitarianism, but he loves his little brother and keeps going against the “flow of the world,” hoping for a miracle.
Last month, I explained how FMA’s alchemy is a perfect stand-in for the scientific revolution, highlighting the contradictions at its very foundations and how its deconstruction creates a point of contact between the franchise and Christianity. This paradox is the tragedy at the heart of FMA (2003), but I contend that it becomes a sign of hope in 2012’s FMA:B. What is the difference between the two versions, you ask? Wait for it: brotherhood!

This week, we’re serving up reviews of fantasy series and modern-day high school romance, which have become par for the course in today’s manga landscape, but there are some outliers in our bunch as well: stories about seeking your passion, an unusual take on detective series, and a manhwa about vengeance, justice, and family. Dig into our reviews below and let us know what you think!
