It's the same way that super hero fiction has exposure to radiation being a medium to confer super powers. In the early 20th century knowledge of radiation was full of pseudo-science. At the same time it spawned atomic bombs, nuclear power and a way to treat cancer that is still used routinely.

I love that psychic powers are still "allowed" in science fiction. They're an acceptable part of the aesthetic. Like you can't have magic, but you can have brain magic, because it's more Science.

1. Making yourself unhappy to improve someone else's life does not increase the net positive good your actions would produce. The universe did not create you to bring joy to others at the expense of your own comfort. Respect and value yourself. Do not feel guilt over doing so.

2. There are many levels of friendship. A warm acquaintance would provide acknowledgment that the other person exists and that they are not being judged by everyone around them. Work friends commiserate over shared burdens and frustrations. They are no less valuable despite their superficiality. Yes, it can be awkward when another person holds greater affection for you than you feel for them. That isn't your problem to fix. You don't owe them your time and affection.

3. Do they need community, or are they looking for a friend? I assume you didn't want to write a rambling wall of text. There is nuance to most situations. Does this person desperately need YOU to be their friend? What about family? Are they a member of a religious community? School friends? Cellies? Yes, they were deprived of the exact years in which most people build lifelong fellowships, but it doesn't mean that they are desperately lonely. (Or my ass could be out on this one as I don't know.)

3. You have no moral obligation to solve a systemic issue based on proximity. If you feel you aren't doing your part to make the world a better place, work on that. Find a way to improve your life/community that doesn't make you feel shitty.

My advice on how to handle this person with 2 giant caveats. First, I am no expert on interpersonal skills. Second, I have no idea what your comfort level with this person is or to what degree you suffer from social anxiety.

Uncomfortable honestly is a virtue, even if it feels shitty.

What is the frequency in which unavoidable contact with this person occurs? Do they work with you? Have they joined a social group you are a member of? Are they a friend of a friend?

This person and their desire for friendship have already made you uncomfortable. To what degree would an honest conversation make things worse?

Are you capable of addressing your discomfort with them head on. Do they agree that what they did was abhorrent? Do they continue to struggle with attraction to children? Do they fear that they might continue in criminal behavior? Have they pursued mental/emotional counseling?

Have an honest inventory with yourself.

Do you think you're overreacting? Not others say you're overreacting. Not, you think others think your overreacting. I make no judgements one way or the other. I don't know you or this situation well enough to come to conclusions. (Anyway, fuck my opinions, I'm a stranger)

If you think you're overreacting, try to unpack that with or without assistance.

I'm really stuck in a moral quandary. Someone really wants to be my friend... she was very open about being convicted of sexual contact with a 13 year old when she was 18. Something abhorrent to me, she was arrested and did a decade in jail

I hesitate to write her off as a lost cause because I fear that further isolation might only make her situation worse. We have hobbies in common l, but i can't deny the severe sick I get when I think about it.

I want to believe that people can grow and change, but the nature of the offenses makes that... challenging.

I'm so stuck. I think gradually forming a community she can be welcome in could be important, but i worry that spending time with her could be seen as an endorsement of that behavior. I just l... I don't know. Its a test of my ideal that people can grow and change, and she was only 18 when it happened. A lot of growth can happen in that time... and if I deny her that positive human contact, making her feel alone may make things worse.

I just don't know. I think anyone can be rehabilitated and improve, but there's the emotional ick I get. But I don't know what to do

I still have Star Trek ringtones. I used the "Red Alert" klaxon when my ex called. Part of the death of ringtones is that Android stopped supporting custom notifications. I used to know which app was pushing me by ringtone. That's not available anymore.

it's kind of sad that we don't really do custom ringtones anymore. most people just stick with the default list that comes with your phone, if they change it at all. if they're even aware they can change it at all. like yeah, people letting their phones ring in public is obnoxious, but wouldn't it be a little less obnoxious if it was something funny? or personal? people used to change the text tone of every contact so every time they got a text they knew who it was just from the sound. isn't that sweet? isn't that nice? don't you miss it? don't you want to scream when you hear that stupid apple pa-Ting!??? we could have a chorus of awoogas and clips of people's favorite songs and recordings saying '(blank) IS CALLING, WARNING, (blank) IS CALLING' and all things considered i would prefer that over pa-Ting!, pa-Ting!, pa-Ting!, whistle whistle, pa-Ting!
