Did you know that Gaza is integral to Jewish history?
Did you know that Gaza is integral to Jewish history?
For thousands of years, Jews lived, studied, and prayed in this coastal city. From the Bible to the Talmud, from Samson’s struggle to rabbinic wisdom, Gaza was and remains part of the Jewish story.
In the bible, Gaza is included in the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah, together with other cities like Ashkelon and Ekron.
Joshua 15:47: Ashdod, its dependencies and its villages; Gaza, its dependencies and its villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt and the Great Sea was their boundary.
During the First and Second Temple Periods: Gaza's location on the southwestern border of ancient Israel made it a strategic and contested city. Jewish influence in the region waxed and waned, depending on the strength of the central Israelite kingdom.
In the 1st century BCE, during the Hasmonean expansion under King Alexander Jannaeus, Gaza was temporarily brought under Jewish control, reflecting a revival of Jewish sovereignty and religious identity.
During the Roman and Byzantine Periods a notable Jewish community existed in Gaza. Ancient rabbinic literature—including the Jerusalem Talmud—mentions Jewish sages from Gaza, such as Rabbi Yose of Gaza. Discussions of halacha (Jewish law), trade, and agriculture connected to the region are recorded in Talmudic sources.
Archaeological discoveries in the wider Gaza region, including synagogue remnants and inscriptions, confirm a Jewish presence during the Byzantine era. These findings demonstrate religious life and cultural continuity in Gaza for Jews well into Late Antiquity.
In 1929, when Arabs slaughtered Jews in numerous communities throughout Israel (then British Mandate Palestine), the Jews of Gaza were evacuated to Tel Aviv to save them from the lynch mob.
In 2005, the Jews of Gaza were uprooted from their homes and removed from Gaza in the hope that giving the land to the Arabs living there and allowing them to build their communities as they pleased, would create peace.
