The appearance and material of the cylinder head gasket

Externally, the cylinder head gasket is a complex monolithic part, in fact, a frame with holes for cylinders and coolant passage.
The classic cylinder head gasket consists of a carrier sheet with perforation, on both sides of which are attached plates of cork, fiber, cardboard and other soft materials (asbestos-containing or asbestos-free). To minimize the effects of pressure, the central holes and fasteners are edged with metal rings. Due to the elasticity of the material, such gaskets ideally fit on the sealing surfaces and, if necessary, easily restore their shape.
However, the most common today are cylinder head gaskets. Made of steel or copper, they are distinguished by multilayer, increased wear resistance and, as a result, long service life. In addition, to ensure even better sealing, the joints can be covered with a special solution - sealant. All this allows you to achieve maximum gasket efficiency, and also contributes to an even distribution of pressure across the entire plane of the cylinders and the head of the block.
Other types of engine gaskets
Valve cover gaskets seal the joints of the valve cover with the grooves and prevent leakage of engine oil. As a rule, rubber is used as a material.
Gaskets of the cooling system seal the joints, protecting against ingress of coolant, and thereby maintain the working temperature inside the cylinders. They are made of rubber resistant to the effects of liquids, oils and temperature extremes.
Cuffs (seals) for shafts - round gaskets with a spring, designed to smooth the gaps between the rotating shafts (crankshaft, camshaft, etc.) and fixed elements. Provide reliable separation of different environments (water, air, liquid, oil), and also protect against dust and oxidation. They are made of durable artificial rubber.
Engine pan gaskets are installed between the cylinder block and the oil pan and prevent oil from escaping from the crankcase. They are different in composition, cork or rubber are more common.
Other gaskets and seals that seal the joints and provide soft and efficient operation of all mechanisms. Often they are sold immediately with kits that are very convenient to use when repairing an engine or servicing.

Forever forgetting about the problems caused by failed engine gaskets is easy - just follow three simple rules:
All gaskets are used only once.
If there is any suspicion of a malfunction, it is better to replace the gasket.
Not only the engine gasket itself, but also all auxiliary parts are subject to replacement.
