Oh dear, Bernadetta looked absolutely devastated. This conversation was becoming too fraught for her liking. She also belatedly realized that children were pressed into combat against other children… What kind of leader would allow such a thing?
Tumblr media
The last thing she wanted was to cause pain to the undeserving, it was her role to help others, not hinder them! “Ah, please, I should…have…” ‘You need to keep it together, Cornflower. She’s looking to you!’ “…That is very brave of you. I-I am sure that if I were in your place, it would be more then I could bear.”
Cornflower seemed visibly distressed after that, and Bernadetta’s heart started to race in the way it usually did when she felt the need to panic and apologize for whatever she’d done wrong at any given time.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to upset you with gloomy tales of my homeland! I-!“ But upon hearing a compliment to her perceived bravery, she stopped dead in her tracks. “Me, brave? N-No, I’m not really all that brave. I mostly just...fire arrows from horseback, and use my lance when an enemy gets too close...“ She sighed. “People who fight on the front lines are way braver than I am...“

“I cannot blame you for being worried.” Cornflower had an… unusual relationship towards war. Her ability to foresee events meant that times of war were when her word was most valuable, yet she could find no joy in the slaughter, working to end the conflicts as quickly as possible. But why would Bernadetta want to study under those conditions? She was a student, no one would ask her to be in the line of fire, would they?
Tumblr media
“Bernie, I do not know what war is like for you, but I am grateful that you and yours are safe.” A somewhat selfish truth, given that at least a few of her loved ones could still be in harm’s way, but a truth nonetheless. Her hands were clasped over her chest as she finished her statement and she did not miss Bernadetta’s expression. The student had a conflicted look gracing her features now. Perhaps her friends had some personal stake in this war?
“It’s...well, it’s certainly not fun...“ she said. Though some of her former classmates seemed to enjoy a good fight and being on the front lines, Bernadetta wasn’t that way at all. “The worst part of it is fighting people I used to go to school with...five years ago, even coming from different nations, we were at least on the same side.“
Tumblr media
Still, she couldn’t falter. She never knew when she might be whisked back to Garreg Mach in order to fight the next battle. The topic was a grim one, anyway. “I-I’m sorry, this must not be tremendously interesting to you...”

He had a feeling this would happen. She was already panicking again. It was in her nature—though he had hoped that maybe something had changed. It had not.
“If you do not breathe… you will faint.”
Tumblr media
This was already becoming a conversation he wished he could have avoided. It was his own choice to speak to her too. How troublesome…
“I didn’t turn to you to give you advice however… I’m not your teacher.” Anymore. “I thought you would like to be aware of Emperor Edelgard’s whereabouts within this city.”
“Right...! Thank you...for that...!“ She really ought to heed his words, because she was feeling a bit dizzy. She willed herself not to think too hard about the fact that the man before her could possibly change into the Death Knight. Or was he already in the process of doing just that? Was he trying to lure her into a false sense of security?
Tumblr media
Before she could stop herself, she found herself letting out the beginning of a scream. No, she had to stop! What if the Death Knight liked screaming people? She quickly clasped her hands over her mouth, just in time to catch what he was saying about Edelgard. The mention of the emperor seemed to restore a sense of dignity in her, oddly enough. “W-Wait...Edelgard is here too...?”

Now Bernie’s trepidation was not unfounded. She was sure that having a base to operate from and return to had its advantages. Cornflower could understand a need for privacy, but for her the Chamomile Gardens were a good enough place to relax. She hadn’t put much thought in how the others would acclimate without the familiar comforts they were accustomed to. ‘Oh, am I really that thoughtless? That sounds like too much to bear…’ Now it was no surprise why so many participated in the officials’ events: every game won was another opportunity to retrieve something they had lost.
Tumblr media
The gem’s countenance turned solemn at Bernadetta’s words. It was true, throughout the years her travel partner proved herself multiple times to be her center for warmth and safety, everything a proper home needed. As well as everything that was wrested away from those who came to live here. Well, everything may have been an overestimate. “What of your friends, then? I’ve heard of people reuniting with loved ones here, occasionally.”
For a moment, it seemed as though Cornflower was lost in thought. As much as Bernadetta didn’t want to pry, she was still compassionate, and if something was troubling this new acquaintance, she was most certainly a willing listener. Even so, she couldn’t muster up the courage to say something about it.
Instead, she just answered the question that had been put before her. “Oh, well...I’m fortunate that I’m not entirely alone here, for certain. Dorothea is here, and lots of other people I know, too...but it makes me wonder...” She looked up. “My homeland is kind of in the midst of a war, so I wonder how things are going without all of us there...”

“Your accessories are cute, too!” Djeeta adds brightly, pointing to Bernadetta’s earrings and hair bow. She takes a few moments more to look her over and nods to herself when she finished. The attention to detail reminded her of her designer crewmate. The captain wouldn’t doubt that they’d get along somehow.
Tumblr media
“Bernadetta is a pretty name,” she says while saying it for herself. “Bernie is also a cute nickname. If you don’t mind, I’d like to call you Bernie. A cute nickname for a cute girl.” The blonde seems strangely proud of herself for saying so. Hopefully she doesn’t embarrass her. “Are you new here?”
Wow...how fortunate for her to have found someone so kind to talk to! Djeeta was so warm and inviting that Bernadetta felt truly...relaxed? There was a certain genuine quality to her that must have contributed to that.
“Oh, um, thank you!“ she said, a shy smile on her face as she reached up to touch her hair accessory. “I actually like making these sorts of things, so...I’m glad someone else likes them!“
Tumblr media
She almost felt herself blushing at the compliment. “W-What!? Me? No, I don’t know if I’m really all that cute! But, um...thank you very much...” She figured she might as well be receptive to the compliment, even if she didn’t quite agree with it. “Um...sort of. I’ve had a little bit of time to adjust, but...it’s still been kind of a wild ride...”

It was nice to watch as the young lady spoke with joy in her voice. Considering her reluctance at first, it was good to know Cornflower was able to put her at ease. How could anyone find this dulcet youth annoying? She was a total sweetie! “If it means anything, I think you’re a wonderful person to talk with.”
Tumblr media
As for her home… That was a tougher question. The easy answer would be to describe the colony she was made on, but that wasn’t her true home ever since she left. That was one of the issues with traveling constantly: home was who she traveled with, not a physical location. “My home..? Well, before I found myself here, I used to explore the land with a dear friend, so I suppose I did not have a set home.”
“Wow...you’re such a nice person, Cornflower...! It’s really nice talking to you too!“ Her words were honest, and she felt at ease for the first time in a while. Sometimes, she did worry that some people were only complimenting her as a means of making her drop her guard enough to let them embarrass her, but she didn’t feel that way here.
As she mentioned not having a set home, the very thought was almost frightening to Bernadetta. No set home meant no room to retreat to, after all!
Tumblr media
“Oh wow...I can’t even imagine that! If I don’t have a room of my own, I can’t manage to relax...a little sanctuary is really important for me to have, I guess! Being holed up in my den is the reason they call me Bernie Bear, after all.“ Still, maybe traveling with a friend was nice, in its own way. She was curious to know more. “Then again...having a close friend with you can make anywhere feel a little more like home, even in the worst of times...“

Sylvain hasn’t even said a word before Bernadetta is cutting him off, snatching up the notebook she’d been writing in - which he hadn’t even noticed, actually, mind you! - and basically accusing him of all these things!
– Well, accusing is probably the wrong word, considering he’d read her old notebook once. But that was different! “Hey, hey, listen!” The redhead doesn’t sound defensive - if anything, it’s closer to persuasive, and his lips are curved into the most convincing little pout he can manage. Not that he figures it’ll work.
This is Bernadetta, after all.
Tumblr media
“Bernadetta, come on!” His hands are raised in surrender, more or less, “I wasn’t even gonna ask! The only reason I read your story last time was so I could try to figure out who the notebook belonged to so I could return it! That’s all!” It’s a solid defense - and actually, surprisingly, the truth. It wasn’t his fault he was trying to be a good person!
But maybe it was his fault for liking her writing so much - asking to read the rest of it once she’d finished it might’ve been a little much. Should’ve known better, maybe? “I was just coming over to see how you were doing! I haven’t seen you around before. Did you just get here?”
He may have been putting up his hands, but it would take more than that to convince her! Then again, he did seem genuinely concerned about her...but maybe it was all just a trap! A trap to read everything she’d written! Well, once she’d written it...for the meantime, all of the conflicting thoughts about Sylvain’s true intentions was making her want to scream.
Tumblr media
“Uh...um...!“ Breathe, Bernie, breathe. “No, I...I’ve been here for a little while! I’m getting used to things, mostly. It’s peaceful, for a change!” There, she managed, somehow, and that gave her some much-needed confidence. She was still clutching the notebook as tightly as she could, but hey, baby steps. “What...what about you, Sylvain? Have, um...have you been here a while...?“

Now that was an excellent question. It was true that she had found Koi to be quite lovely, what with all its activities and new and interesting individuals to befriend, but was it worth leaving everyone she knew and cared about behind? She drew her hands upwards as she contemplated. ‘Absolutely not.’
Tumblr media
Of course, there was no need to bother Bernie with all that, now was there? “There are a few people I miss, but I find interacting with others, yourself included, certainly helps. It doesn’t bode well to accentuate the negative.”
Wow...to be told that talking with her was helpful? Bernadetta was, well...flattered. As someone who constantly feared that she was bothering people, even making them angry, to hear such a thing made her happy indeed.
Tumblr media
“I’m glad...! Usually, all I do is annoy people. At least, I think I do...it’d be hard not to find me bothersome, really!” She gasped. “Oh no...but you just said not to get caught up in negative things, didn’t you? I should try to do the same...“
Thinking about that which was comforting, Bernadetta was reminded of home...even if Fodlan was at war, it was still her homeland, and there were certainly things about it that she missed. “So, um, what’s the place you come from like? I-If you don’t mind me asking.”

Cornflower returned the expression with a flustered smile, flattered at the compliment. While she had a good rapport with most of the citizens she had met thus far, this young lady in particular reminded her of her former compatriots. Bernadetta had that same soft spoken dignity about her, Cornflower felt.
“I’m happy to meet you, Bernie. Are you finding your time in the city well?” While there were plenty of young adults wandering the streets in relative safety, the fact that Bernie seemed to take issue conversing with strangers meant it was only fair to be safe. And if she was well, then no one had to worry.
Happy to meet her...it was so nice to hear someone say that. Cornflower really was a nice person, Bernadetta could tell. She would have to do her best not to mess things up!
Tumblr media
“Well...I’ll admit it was a little jarring...” she admitted. “I like being at home in my room, surrounded by familiar things...and this place seems so different!’ She sighed, remembering one of the good aspects of the ordeal. “I guess I’m lucky that some of my friends are here, at least...what about you, Cornflower?“

Being seasoned as she was, the feeling of being watched and followed didn’t escape Djeeta.  During her walk through the area, she managed to steal a few glances behind her, determining if her follower posed any danger. There appeared nothing to worry over, from a glance she guessed the girl wanted to say something.
The blonde wanted to avoid scaring the other girl off by approaching her, so she continued window shopping. Surely, if she gave the girl enough time then she can gain the courage she needed. It was worth the wait
Caught off guard, the blonde blinked as she processed the compliment. To show off her outfit, she spun once as bright laughter bubbled forth. “Thank you! Your outfit is cute too!”
Tumblr media
“I’m Djeeta. What’s your name?”
Somehow, she’d managed to stave off the instinct to run away in embarrassment as soon as she’d finished speaking, and it was a good thing, too. The blonde girl seemed perfectly kind, and so friendly, too. Even her laugh was like a ray of sunshine.
Tumblr media
“Oh! You think so? Um...thank you!“ She looked down at her clothes, as if to check for herself that it did look cute. Much of the embroidery on her outfit was her own handiwork, so she was glad someone liked it. “Djeeta, huh? I’m Bernadetta...or Bernie, if that’s too much of a mouthful!“

It was impossible not to notice her.
For one thing, Jeritza had already seen Bernadetta walking around from the corner of his eye. For another, she was speaking out loud—albeit quietly. It was still audible. He did question if it was a good idea or not to approach her since she didn’t really seem to want to talk to him, but on the other hand they were supposed to be allies and those were advantageous in a situation such as this. It was probably also a good idea to let her know the status of the emperor within this city.
Giving a gentle sigh, he turned in her direction, making eye contact but not moving forward. If he did he was sure she’d run away.
“It might work best to not speak aloud if you don’t want to be noticed…”
Tumblr media
“Otherwise you’re simply drawing attention to yourself.”
No bloodlust in his voice, no threatening aura surrounding him...thankfully, she’d managed to come in contact with Jeritza and not the Death Knight. But still, why did he have to be so...tall!? And was what he said intended as a threat, or as a word of advice? She truly had no idea.
“Um...I, t-that’s...“ Deep breaths, Bernie...deep breaths. She was coaching herself, so why was she still forgetting to breathe? By the time she was able to answer, her voice came out in a squeak that barely had any air behind it. “That’s good advice, thank you...!“

Were her eyes deceiving her? Was that Bernadetta waving to her? Dorothea double takes, before confirming that it was, in fact, the familiar purple-haired girl waving at her. This is absolutely good news.
❛ Oh, Bern! ❜
Tumblr media
With a flurry of movement, Dorothea sweeps up the archer into her arms. Thank goodness that she was safe.
❛ It’s so good to see you here. You’re not hurt, are you? ❜
Bernadetta was quick to hug her friend back. Truly, a good friend...and even if Dorothea had made it clear that her commoner-hating father would be no match for her, it was still worrying to the oft-worried noblewoman. And now, far from the empire and her father, Bernadetta knew nothing could stop her from being friends with the songstress.
“No! I’m perfectly safe, actually!“ She laughed softly. “I was a little shaken up to end up here, I’ll admit! But I have a really nice room, and they even gave me a teddy bear!“

Cornflower’s head tilted slightly as she pondered the question. Truthfully, having a pair of eyes boring into the back of your head while you were trying to relax was a bit…off-putting. But it was also true that there was no one else like her on these isles, she could forgive this one for being curious. After all, it was clear that Bernadetta meant no harm by her actions. It would be a loss to have this young lady leave without getting to know her first.
“Do not worry, I love taking time off to converse with others. And I can tell you have a fount of knowledge to share.” Cornflower wasn’t trying to be flattering there, between her talk of research and how she reacted to the gem’s statement it was clear that this person had a lot of stories to tell.
“My, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Cornflower Sapphire.”
The moment of hesitation scared Bernadetta. Usually, people didn’t tell her that she was being a nuisance, even if she thought she was being one, but...what if she was? What if she’d only ended up bothering this seemingly kind stranger?
She was pleasantly surprised to hear that she actually wanted to talk. “I-I’m so glad! And, um, I do read a lot, so...I guess I might be knowledgeable! At least in some areas!”
She smiled. “Cornflower Sapphire...like the precious stone? That’s such a pretty name! I’m Bernadetta von Varley, but you can call me Bernie...that is, if you want to!”

Sitting on a iron-wrought bench, Cornflower was taking a momentary rest from a stroll through the flower field when she heard a whispery voice to her right. A young adult, wearing a distinct school uniform and a charming purple bob was gazing at her across the path. The youth’s eyes seemed to glimmer as though she was enamored by what she was witnessing. …Which was Cornflower herself, she realized after a beat.
Well, now that they had locked gazes, it would be rude to just ignore her. The gem slid off the bench in a fluid motion and ambled over to Bernadetta, hoping to maintain an air of gentleness as she stepped ever closer.
“I must agree. The blossoms are so lovely here, you could almost forget it’s winter.” A simple yet timeless conversation starter that would allow Bernadetta to steer the course.
Seeing the approach of the person she’d been staring at, Bernadetta’s heart started to race. Oh no, a stranger, a stranger! And the stranger was coming right toward her! She willed herself not to scream or run away, or do something embarrassing like that. True, this person was beautiful from a distance, but talking to someone completely new was still terrifying!
She was relieved that her voice was as calm as her blue color. Blue always was so placid...Bernadetta always liked using it in her paintings to create a sense of tranquility in a landscape. The topic of flowers too set her mind at ease, and she found herself...smiling?
“Oh! Y-Yes, the flowers here are amazing...“ She looked out at them with a content sigh. “I’ve read about flowers that can bloom during the winter before, but I’ve never actually seen them until now...“ Further proof that getting out of one’s room could be a nice thing from time to time, she supposed. “Um...I-I’m not bothering you, am I? Because you can tell me if I am, and I’ll never bother you ever again!“ Even her usual manner of expressing concern over her effect on other people seemed much more toned down than usual, she couldn’t help but notice.

Having managed to purchase a small, leather-bound notebook from a store near her new home, Bernadetta was happy. The pens were different in this different place, but she’d managed to figure it out pretty quickly. This type of pen was actually pretty convenient!
She should have known it would be a bad idea to start a new story in a public place, but she was just so excited by her new idea: a brave, plucky heroine sent unexpectedly to a new world, surrounded by strangers. It was only based on a true story...the heroine was much more likable, in her mind.
She’d barely scrawled down the first few words when she saw a familiar blaze of red hair nearby, and she panicked, clutching her notebook to her chest. Still, she managed to put her foot down, even in the face of another person.
Tumblr media
“N-No way, Sylvain! You can’t read this...it’s a work in progress, and even if it wasn’t, I still wouldn’t share it! Bernie’s stories are for Bernie’s eyes only!“

Bernadetta had seen a lot of amazing things...Crest abilities that gave people superhuman strength, people who could turn into dragons, just to name a few. Never before, though, had she seen a person whose entire existence seemed to be bathed in such a lovely light blue. It was almost like she was from a world even more different from this one.
Tumblr media
The difference didn’t frighten Bernadetta by any means, though. That shade of blue was beautiful and oddly comforting, like a blue sky or gentle water. She found herself staring without realizing it. “So pretty...”
