I think 50 shades of grey did so much damage to BDSM writing in fic and like not because I think fic writers were taking inspiration from it, but we did get a lot of detailed explanatory posts about all the different ways in which those guys were Doing It Wrong, which is not in and of itself a bad thing but since then everybody got so hung up on making sure everybody in their fics was nothing like 50 shades of grey and actually demonstrates that yes I do understand the principles of safe sane and consensual and the traffic light system and safewording and aftercare and checking in that now everybody fucks like a 101 handbook and I think we've only just recently started to recover from it. love me a dynamic where it's two repressed freak idiots who accidentally invent BDSM all on their own and have to come up with the strangest most deeply harmful ways of navigating that situation
#I don’t think 50 shades of gray was bad because the dynamic was problematic#it was bad because the dynamic was fucking boring#also I read like part of the first book and there’s barely any sex in it#it’s not even that graphic#also maybe it was off because the guy was presented as a bdsm expert#so like he should realistically actually know about bdsm safety and all that#those dudes sharing a tent in the 1800s would not#there are definitely pairings where it makes sense that they would be very cautious about boundaries and safe words and stuff before sex#but sometimes it’s a variety of ‘he would not fucking sat that’#but instead it’s ‘he would not be practicing proper bdsm etiquette’#biggest example of this is one time I read a fic about the sadistic dentist from little shop of horrors#and it had him using the safety light system and doing regular safe word checks#and I was like um?????#this guy????#the guy who canonically abuses his girlfriend?#you think he’s practicing safe sane consensual sex?#grow up#also I think people need to realize that unless you’re doing cnc you don’t actually need a safeword#unless you’re playing with consent as a concept you can just have people say what they mean#no means no and yes means yes and more means more#you don’t have to get deeper into that if it’s not necessary
