EASY

1. Empty paper rolls. Put food in the rolls, fold the rolls.

2. Towel roll. Spread towel on the ground. Scatter food on the towel. Fold the towel.

3. Muffin tin. Put food in each section. If available, add crumbled paper or balls on top.

4. Empty egg carton. Put food in each section. Offer open or closed.

5. Scattered feeding. Scatter food on the ground or in the grass.

6. Box party. Add anything safe inside a cardboard box (plastic bottle, paper, toys). Add food to the mix.

7. Cup game. Put food under 3 cups. Let your animal find them. You can raise the difficulty by adding more cups and/or hiding treats under only a few cups.

8. Frozen carrot. Freeze carrot, give to pet.

9. Ice cube tray. Put treats/kibble in an empty ice tray and give to your pet. You can also add water or safe broth and freeze.

MEDIUM

10. Kong filling. Soak kibble in water for 5 minutes. Fill kong with kibble, freeze. Bonus: Top with peanut butter or pumpkin puree. (There are other fillings for kongs, I will write a separate post.)

11. Blow bubbles. Get pet friendly bubbles and have fun.

12. Box stack. 3 boxes each stacked into each other. Put treats in the smallest box. Close the boxes.

13. Search. Hide treats throughout your house. Let pet find them.

14. Sniffari. Take your dog out somewhere new on a logline, let animal sniff to their heart's content.

15. Supervised shredding. Let your dogs shred cardboard or eye free stuffed animals from the thrift store.

16. Plastic bottle. Empty and clean the bottle. Poke holes in the sides. Put treats inside.

17. Snuffle mat. Get a snuffle mat, hide treats inside.

18. Teach low impact tricks (touch, shake, sit, chin rest).

19. Cabbage. If safe, give your dog a cabbage to shred.

a lot of you got a kick out of my service dog’s battle jacket, so i thought i’d share some more pictures of the man himself.

i know people have a lot of stereotypes about what service dogs and their handlers are “supposed” to look like, and it confuses people to see a young, seemingly able bodied punk rocker with a service dog.

but i share this to say, that if you as a disabled person don’t see a life for yourself, you can create one. when i started to realize i was disabled almost 10 years ago, i certainly didn’t imagine this is where i’d be now. in fact, i didn’t even plan to making it to this point.

but a diagnosis doesn’t have to mean the end of the world. sometimes your world is just beginning. some people are of the belief that everything happens for a reason. me, not so much. i’ll never be grateful for the suffering i experienced in this world, but i will always, always be glad i chose to stay in it.

Sometimes I put my face up against my dog while he's sleeping to feel his little lungs expand and his little heart beat and I am struck by the beauty of of life and the miracle of nature to evolve for thousands of years just to create one little guy and put him in my house
