” Those are very hurtful words, Gwen. Try and
be a little more mature, yeah? “
"Well I didn't nearly get myself killed
because I thought being reckless
was a good idea !!"

"I don't think it will be."
[ The words come out soft, more honest than
she realises. Right now, she doesn't see an
expiry date -- there is only a long, twisted
road, eerie yet inviting. He is shrouded in
mystery and misery, and he seeks -- craves
-- companionship.
She knows because she's felt it
all before -- in the form of a boy
who made a promise to her dead
father to leave her alone.
The same father who taught her kindness,
who taught her that there's no such thing
as just good and bad. There's only those
who try to make a difference, and those
who just sit by. ]
"You've been trying for a long time."
[ What she originally intended as a question
comes out a statement, a fact. She looks
down, back up. Looks him in the eye. ]
"But you don't have to be alone
anymore."
“Here’s hoping it’s not anytime soon.”
[ The sentiment is genuine, which is a surprise
in itself, when not too long ago he would have
welcomed death with open arms, rather than
live with what he had become. There would
always be a part of him that believed he was
wasn’t worth being saved but people like
Gwen, being able to casually flirt and talk
again, made him feel like there could be some
way to be a better man.
He remembers, painfully so, another person
with a heart too big for their body that believed
in him too. That believed him — too good —
too whole — to be a broken toy soldier who
allowed others to pull his strings.
So maybe James Buchanan Barnes was no
villain but that didn’t make him good. All he
could do was try. ]
“I appreciate that, Gwen. — That’s just the
kind of stuff that makes me want to try.”
[ And he knows it’s dangerous to get close to him,
but he’s human. James was a man steeped in
both voluntary and involuntary solitude, a person
forged into something distinctly inhuman, but a
human all the same. So of course, he would fall
prey to l o n e l i n e s s.
With so little kindness in this day and age, finding
some, in being saved by the man on the bridge or
in the form of this young woman, well, he was not
willing to give it up just yet. ]

"---No way.
And you've been back for
how long exactly -- ?
-- Never mind.
There's a place down the street that
sells really great bagels. Let's go."

❝ Good.
————No, it’s really not that easy.
I just haven’t had a real New York bagel
since I got back. ❞

"---Yeah. Sure.
--Have you heard from her, at all?"
"I think we all were, definitely, that was crazy. Yeah, she is; it was weird, it kind of…came out of nowhere. She had to take care of something, said it would probably take a while. Luckily, it looks like the place is in very good hands, even without her here."

"Bagels? Definitely.
-----So, that's your secret? Feed
Harry Osborn a bagel and he'll
lighten up?"
[ « ℍ » ]
❝ Alright, that’s fine.
Although————I could go for
a bagel right about now.
If we pass a bagel place, I can’t
promise not to go in and get one. ❞
