She accepted the guesswork quietly, only nodding to show she'd heard Vi's response. Allowing silence to breathe between them, Beth subdued the familiar prickle of defensiveness trying to climb up her throat. She was secure in her motivations and actions with Lucien; Vi's indirect accusations didn't apply.
So, Beth sipped at the tea and tried not to remember the days when milk and sugar could be freely added. "I'm glad we agree," was the eventual response, Beth's smile small but genuine. "We all have big kid pants we can put on to ask for help when we're ready for it. No point in pushing a body sooner than or beyond that."
"Probably in the overflow storage or in the clinic." Broken? Not like she wasn't familiar with things breaking, but that still irked her. Lucien hadn't intended on breaking it, it'd probably been a mistake, but still- maybe it was the exhaustion of the day tugging at her, and the damned pain that didn't want to leave her leg, but she could feel herself growing irritable.
"I sure as hell hope so." Vi took a sip from her tea, still hot enough that it almost burned her tongue. Clutching the mug and feeling the warmth seep into her fingers, Vi regarded her. "Last thing anybody in this place needs is somebody getting all up in their business. Just because they think they know what's best for other people. Clear?"

"No, I-" She rubbed her face, knowing Colin would hate her saying word one about it all. All the gymnastics to protect him ended with giving Val the wrong impression. "I can't imagine him knowing we're kin. Feels like too much investment."
Colin was following Mike around, he'd told her. Trying to learn more about him. But, lord, he'd been so sarcastic, mocking, crude - and attacking Beth when she didn't immediately know who he was talking about. She didn't want that to be who Colin was. "I shouldn't have said anything, Val. Just - family troubles."
Reaching for Val's hand again, Beth tried for a smile. "You're kind to let me ramble without making a drop of sense, Val." Listening to people who'd spent their evening drinking had no doubt prepared Val for such a thing.
Tumblr media
"Thanks, sweetheart." Val smiled softly at the offer, squeezing her friend's hand, though she couldn't muster the normal energy behind it. It didn't... feel right, to talk about what was happening with her and Mike, not yet. Mustering the energy to open up about the drinking was tough as it was. Telling somebody about the deal she'd made with Mike was - well, seemed like complaining about your own decisions, really. She couldn't face that just yet. How serious it'd become.
"He talked about Colin?" Val made a sympathetic noise. She knew how close the Youngs were. The people you loved often enough were a soft spot. Probably even more so for Beth. In addition what he'd said about her, no wonder it'd affected her. "Wasn't that what he was doin'? Usin' Colin as a way to get a reaction out of you?"
Val smiled sympathetzically at Beth. "It's okay to be mad at him, y'know? He was tryin' to rile you up."

An agreeable hum at the suggestion and Beth nodded. "If she has them to spare, it would be fun to try." She pressed her thumbs lightly against Val's wrists in turn, repetitively massaging them toward the palm.
Beth had considered Daybreakers. "I can't figure why they would, except to lure. People there or people away." As far as she knew, Redwood's location hadn't been revealed. The entire point of the Ranch, as Beth understood it. "If they knew where Redwood was, I expect we'd know about it by now. Don't you think?"
Tumblr media
"Oh really? We should try that sometime. Bet Mayra has some seeds she wouldn't mind volunteerin'." Val watched as Beth worked the lotion into her fingers. Taking care of her skin hadn't exactly been a priority in recent times. Not that there was much product to do that with anyway. This felt... nice. Being taken care of and pampered a little.
Sitting here with Beth, it was almost easy to forget what was going on out there. Almost. "I don't know." Val said, the nervous energy of what was going on out there nagging at her. "I hope nothin' bad. We just got done dealin' with the Daybreakers. We gotta wait and see what the people who went out there, said."
She maybe could've gone out there. She'd been on the ranch and survived, she knew how to fight. She didn't want to though. That, however, opened up another alley of thought. "Do ya think it could've been the Daybreakers? What if they set off somethin'?"

"I think one broke, but I can't speak to the others. Might be at the clinic." Not included in her inventory counts, at least. Beth would protect Lucien, keep private that his leg was worse, that even the cane hadn't stopped him from nearly falling down the stairs. However much Lucien wanted people to believe otherwise, more was needed. "Thanks for letting me know about them, I'll see if I can't figure out where they're at."
Beth tried the tea again. Cool enough now. She didn't disagree with Vi. "Mm," she began, cup held between both hands, "you're right. It isn't my job here. If he hadn't asked, I probably wouldn't have done a blessed thing." Beth's dogged respect for the autonomy of others, for better or worse. "And if he tells me to stop, Vi, I stop."
Tumblr media
"Ike brought back a bunch of canes a while back because Lucien needed a new one. What happened to that?" Vi remembered that, in part because she'd been offered one from the same batch. They'd looked pretty well made and sturdy. And Vi was pretty sure she remembered seeing Lucien with one like it, too. A flicker of irritation tugged at her.
And it didn't go away when Beth continued. Vi could feel her leg protest and throb as she stretched it out, the relief she'd felt before taking a while to hit. "Sounds like you're overreaching." Even though Lucien had asked her, and probably approved the alterations. Still, Vi felt... annoyed. She took a sip from her tea. "It's not really your job in town to do all that."

What’s the strangest place you’ve had sex?
I'm predictably boring, sorry to say. Nothing remotely strange or of interest to the masses.

Closed starter for @vallaurent at Beth's home
Legs tucked under herself on the loveseat, Beth massaged lotion into Val's hand and wrist. It had been a kind gift from Ermano, but she couldn't keep it all to herself, whatever the note said.
Gently pulling each finger in turn, Beth continued, "You can add seeds, if you want flowers to grow from them. I added flower petals and sparkles when I was younger, to jazz them up for letters. The grands loved it at holidays." By morning, the two women would see how well their paper turned out.
Tumblr media
She smoothed down Val's palm, moving in repeated sweeps of her thumbs. "What do you think they'll find up there?" Sharing hobbies only ate up so many hours. After, they were still holding questions. What caused the explosion? Who's out there? Who will return? What or who will return with them?
