Quote
The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.

We have been working hard to image these beautiful Lupinus flowers from the legume family, Fabaceae. Lupinus is cultivated worldwide for its edible seeds, dating back thousands of years in both the Mediterranean and Andean highland regions. #nybgherbarium #pressedplants #flowers #ethnobotany (at The New York Botanical Garden)

PERSONAL CARE CHEMICALS:
All-Natural Sunscreen of the Future:  Algae!
Say goodbye to that commercial concoction of questionable synthetic chemicals in your sunscreen.  The sunscreen of the future is all about algae.
.
Existing sunblock lotions typically work by either absorbing ultraviolet rays or physically blocking them. A variety of synthetic and natural compounds can accomplish this. But most commercial options have limited efficiency, pose risks to the environment and human health or are not stable. To address these shortcomings, scientists looked to nature for inspiration.
The researchers used algae’s natural sunscreen molecules and combined them with chitosan, a biopolymer from crustacean shells. Testing showed their materials were biocompatible, stood up well in heat and light, and absorbed both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B radiation with high efficiency.

Storehouse from Rofshus, Telemark (now at the Norsk Folkemuseum in Oslo)
When I visited this museum I was struck by the care and craftsmanship that had gone into making everyday, working buildings beautiful. This was a particularly lovely example.
