Protein Story Part 1 💪🏼⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ There’s so much misinformation out there about protein so I have decided to make few posts dedicated just to protein.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Somehow protein has become the determinant of if food is healthy or not. Everyone is concerned about if they are getting enough protein or not. First thing people check on a nutrition label is the amount of protein in the food. I’ll be the first to admit I also used to think like this. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The RDA for protein is pretty low. It’s only 0.8g per kg and even that has been considered to be higher than it needs to be. For 150lbs (68kg) person, that comes to only 55g of protein. If you workout, you can increase it to 1.0-1.6g per kg lean body weight. There hasn’t been much benefit found for gaining muscle mass past 1.6g per kg mark (reference for this in comments).⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ In North America, people are getting 2-3 times the RDA for protein. Even vegans who don’t eat animal products have been shown to be getting way more protein than needed. And yet everyone is concerned about getting enough protein. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ People think protein is the solution to gain muscle mass. Other people think protein is the solution to weight loss. Regardless of the goals, the answer seems to be protein. High protein diets have been associated with many health problems, which I’ll touch on in future posts. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ What I want to point out right now is the fact that 1. We don’t need as much protein as people think. 2. The only people benefiting from high protein diets are the ones selling high protein foods (meat and dairy industry and protein supplement companies).⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ To be continued...⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ *Also, this tofu bowl in the picture was from @localfoodshouston and was delicious! ‼️WHY FULL RANGE OF MOTION (ROM) IS CRUCIAL WHEN LIFTING‼️⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Full ROM is SO important when it comes to resistance training for a variety of reasons. One reason is that it allows you to fully recruit all muscle fibers in the targeted muscle. If on the leg press you’re only going halfway down, you’re missing out on a lot of muscle stimulation that could be targeted through the deep stretch.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Another reason is that with any set weight, you’ll get MORE muscle growth with 10 full ROM reps vs. 10 half reps because you’re moving the weight across a larger distance which = more work done. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Research has shown that muscle growth can also be stimulated simply by stretching the muscle. So the deep stretch you get with every full ROM lift adds even more to your already very effective reps.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ The full ROM also forces you to lift a lower overall weight. You may be able to do 8 plates on the leg press for half reps, but when you do full ROM reps you can only do 6 plates. That’s OKAY and GOOD. Because of the above reasons I mentioned, you’ll still be able to get GREATER muscle growth despite using less overall weight. This makes the set safer, reduces the risk of injury, and reduces overall systemic fatigue which will allow you to perform better on your following sets/movements and therefore achieve even MORE muscle growth.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Another benefit is if you consider yourself a powerlifter or train in a powerlifting style. On the big 3 (squat, bench, and deadlift) our goal is to lift the most amount of weight as efficiently as possible. This often leads us to find ways to structurally shorten the ROM to make the lift “easier”. This could be arching more or using a wider grip on the bench press, taking a wide sumo stance on deadlifts, or maybe even a wide stance on squats. Because we tend to shorten the ROM (within competition standards) in powerlifting, taking your accessories through a full ROM is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. This will allow you to hit those muscles that aren’t hit as well in the powerlifting lifts as well as strengthen the connective tissues through a full ROM without having to go “ass to grass” on your competition squats. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ 🙌🏼

How could it be settled when we have people lying about how they've enjoyed avoiding cake? We do have data that shows us that, unsurprisingly, people stick to diets made up of foods they enjoy. But on the other hand, none of us can deny that keto will have helped some people. When you have someone who has gone from obesity's closest level to Death's Door, to healthy, and they did so via ketogenic means... You aren't going to convince them that it is a poor choice of diet. And I understand that. We're emotional creatures. We work to our own bias. Add to that debate that this indidivual could have managed the same results, via less effort without removing foods they enjoy ... Well then you're just asking for trouble.
