cleansing crystals

full moon: on the night of a full moon, leave your crystals outside to soak up the moonlight, the crystals will still receive the energy even if it’s cloudy or raining! (but make sure the crystals can safely be in contact with water!!)

sunlight: leave your crystals out to bathe in the sun for a few hours (Amegreen, Amethyst, Ametrine,  Aquamarine,  Celestite, Citrine, Fluorite,  Kunzite, Opal,Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Spirit Quartz, Super Seven, Topaz, and Turquoise should not be left out in the sun!!)

sage/incense: waft the smoke over the crystals, or hold the crystals in the smoke, let the smoke reach every side of the crystal

water: let your crystals soak in a nice cool water bath, or place them under running water, visualise the water cleaning out any negative energy (Calcite, Desert Rose, Halite, Hematite, Lodestone, Malachite, Satin Spar, and Selenite should not be placed in water!!)

earth: bury your crystals in the soil for a few hours and the earth will soak up negative energies (again, be cautious about rain!)

sound: place your crystals in front of speakers and play your favourite music!! the vibrations from sound waves will pass through the crystals and reset their vibrations to their original state

flower petals: bury your crystals in a bowl of flower petals, choose a flower that has extra healing properties to help your crystals

visualisation: hold your crystal in your hand and envision a white light surrounding it, then see a white beam pass through the crystal, taking the negative energy away

A Witchy Idea: Salt Pillow!

Cleansing has always been something I’ve not quite settled on method-wise. Lately I’d been looking at selenite plates for the job which, while quite lovely were currently out of my budget. I’ve also always liked salt cleansing but I worry about the mess if one of my cats happen to knock over an entire bowl if salt if they were to walk across my altar, or the potential of corrosion of what I’m trying to cleanse from prolonged salt contact.

So I thought I’d combine ideas and make a salt pillow! This has been shaped to exactly fit the box I store my gems in, so I can keep it in there without worrying about direct salt contact with my stones. It can also be pulled out to cleanse various things by setting them on top which makes it nice and versatile!

What I used:

Fabric of choice - this starry fabric I’ve also used to line my tarot bag.

Thinly woven batting - some I’ve had on hand to add structure, but also to prevent any fine or crushed granules from getting out easily.

A bag of crystal/rock type sea salt - I avoided fine salt for basically the above reason (I want to avoid the salt mess) Naturally you can use your own salt of choice.

Sewn together by hand with very small back stitches, though I’m sure you can use a machine with a small enough stitch.

And that’s it! Hope this inspires someone to make their own witchy crafts!

A small disclaimer is I don’t know if this will prevent any kind of corrosion from prolonged exposure in the closed box I’m using, so I’m still watching for that type of thing - but I’m hoping with the extra fabric isolation layer it won’t be a problem. Please keep this in mind with the use of your own salt pillow!

🖤 Spell Jar for Protection 🖤

Ingredients/Equipment

Chilli Flakes (or Chilli Powder, whatever's around) - to ward off unwanted guests

Rosemary - purification, protection

Salt - absorbing negative energy, protection, purification

Black Pepper (both peppercorns and grounded) - banish negativity, protection from evil

3 Bay Leaves - protection from harmful energies

Protection Sigil or a Banish Negativity Sigil

Preferably Black Candle to seal the jar (white may be used as a substitute as I have done)

A Jar

A Funnel (trust me, if you don't use one shit will go everywhere, make and use a homemade paper funnel if you need to)

Spell Method

Cast a protective circle or do your own pre-spell rituals, whatever works for you and light the candle

Cleanse your equipment and ingredients (I use specific ritual incense but again whatever works for you, sage burning, etc)

Put the ingredients in the jar one at a time, repeating a chosen affirmation for protection with each one. The order doesn't nessicarily matter as the intent is what's most important. However, I recommend leaving the bay leaves until last

Use a marker to draw a sigil that represents protection or banishing negativity on at least one of the bay leaves. If you need to break up the leaves to fit them in the jar that's okay; again, the intention is what's most important

Close the jar and seal it with the wax from the candle

NSFW (Not Safe For Witches): Staying Safe in Magic

A lot of this may seem like common sense, but it needs to be repeated, because Hi, I’m the Mom Friend. Stay safe, friends.

Don’t leave candles burning unattended. Do you want to burn your house down? That’s how you burn your house down. Get a candle snuffer if you’re uncomfortable blowing out your candles or you can use LED candles instead.

If you get a strange reaction to your incense, oils, or herbs, please talk to your doctor. There’s a lot of stuff that you might not realize you’re allergic to. Some people refuse to admit when they have an adverse reaction to their supplies. Don’t be silly. You can swap out any of your supplies for something else that won’t affect your health.

If you practice blood magic, always sanitize your instruments and wounds, or wait to use the blood from accidental wounds. Study first aid until it’s as fluent as a strongly studied second language if you practice blood magic. Stay safe medically, the same goes for sex magic.

Are you foraging for things to use in your craft at a local park or beach? Buy a field guide from your local book shop or borrow one from your local library. It’ll help you discern what’s safe to touch, take, and use from what could potentially result in hives, illness, or worse. I find it also helps to photocopy the images and add them to my grimoire or BoS for reference later on. 

Don’t burn anything you have not fully researched. If you’re not sure if that leaf you found could cause your dog to have a seizure or cause you to go blind, find out what it is first. Research is a witch’s best friend.

Pet-safe your practice. If you have pets that may wander into your space, make sure that nothing you’re using can make them sick. This applies to small pets like hamsters and the like who may be restricted to cages and can’t be away from your space while you’re practicing as well.

Watch where you go. If you’re going to practice outside, make sure you’re not trespassing on anyone’s property. Safety includes keeping yourself safe from the law too, pals.

Use common sense and intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
