Month of Appreciation, Day Twenty Five
I've said it before, if I have one central goal and purpose in life it is this: Gather to myself the finest and most interesting characters that I am able. Find and adore people of character, of intellect, people with charm and drive and compassion. Find people who can fill a room, who can lift up my heart, and who deepen and elevate my understanding of the world.
Is there a higher compliment that can be paid to a person's character than uniquity? So rare and few are the individuals who can create and define their own shade of charisma, who can play the game in their own authentic way and be radiant because of it.
Let me tell you about Amal.
First thing I need to note: Genuinely this girl is a ray of sunshine. She is an overflowing pool of mirth periodically erupting in a cascade of laughter. I've never met someone so unable to keep a straight face, she laughs like birds fly, it's her natural basic state. It's infectious.
There's a quote that I cite often that goes something like, bravery is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act even though scared. Bare with me now.
I think I envy and fear the depth of feeling with which Amal experiences life. Unlike the quote, her depth of feeling isnt specific to fear, nor is it specific to her mirth. What she feels, she FEELS. When I'm overwhelmed with emotion, after a certain volume I find myself distant from the feeling. If I am sufficiently angered or upset by something, I harden myself and solve the problem in a rational calculating headspace, enabling myself to achieve my pragmatic goals and address my emotional needs in safety later on. I have found something akin to strength in that I can put aside my pain and do what needs to be done. It is my perception, that Amal feels every part of the moment, hides from nothing, yet STILL maintains deeply rational pragmatism and clarity. She carries the full weight of the experience, and still manages to do what needs to be done. Where I would disassociate and process later, she never compromises on the human part of the experience.
By some important metrics I think Amal is among the strongest people I've ever met. Her sense of duty, her discipline ( - when she applies it), her sincerity and commitment are genuinely inspiring. She is unyielding under a weight of emotion that would crumple me like paper.
On top of that, I'm consistently impressed and informed by the unique flavour of advice and wisdom that she brings to the table. Grounded in reason and enriched with the human element, she shines a critical light that cuts through any of my self deceptions. She shows me what is important to me, shows me what matters to me, cuts through my bullshit in a few words. It's remarkable. She can see me better than I can see myself at times.
Amal is a princess but a fighter. Delicate but unbreakable. Playful but immovable. She's noncommital, but where she commits, she is absolute. Sharp witted but gentle hearted. Elegant but clumsy (dont tell anyone I said that).
She captures and fills a room, she connects people and connects to people. She makes me see the world in richer colour and makes me feel more deeply. I really mean this. I really do. I would move heaven and earth for you Amal.
