disability advocacy went wrong when it became about inspiration porn and “differently abled” and savants. its incredible that that guy with no legs did a triathlon but your sister with no legs will not and she doesnt need prosthetics or five hour training days to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations. its incredible that that autistic guy can look at a city from a helicopter for an hour and then draw the entire detailed skyline from memory when he lands but your autistic friend cannot and they dont need to have a special Autism Power to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations. 

activism framed around “we are just as CAPABLE” means that when people genuinely are less capable they are left behind. activism framed around “we are just as WORTHY” is fundamental to radical compassion.

Please tell me if I'm too off here, but I can't get this off my mind.

SO, there's this TTRPG called Ordem Paranormal, it has a bunch of creatures and the premise is: normal world but mobs can spawn if enough suffering is instilled. There's a lot more, but that's the important part.

The paranormal and it's creatures are divided within five elements, and the watcher's aesthetic is, in my opinion, quite similar to energy(one of the elements).

So I think watcher's human forms, how they present to people if necessary, would be something like these.

Especially the first one, with exposed organs and creepy smiles, giving that "Alien Who Thinks This Is What A Human Is" vibe, but them knowing full well how disconcerting they look (except they'd have better clothes, of course).

But then I wanted to find something that fit with their non-human form. As much as I love the cosmic horror not fit for the human mind take, I still wanted to find something that resembled it. But the closer I could find were these...

The problem is I think they look too much "classic alien", so I imagine these with the consistency(? If that make sense) of the first images and, you know, huge. And these are not even energy, these are death.

Anyway, add that up to the fact that these entities only come to our world in places where there has been great amounts of suffering and the fact that the watchers feed off of emotions and you got this idea stuck in my head forever.

Hopefully I'm not too far from your vision. But even if I am, at least I got to share this cool looking creatures :3

There’s that meme where it’s like, “wow, you’re beautiful” to something objectively like horrifying, or whatever.

And that’s Mumbo and watcher!grian to a T. Grian shows Mumbo what he looks like as a watched, or Mumbo accidentally sees him like that and Grians assumes he’ll react in fear or horror. Mumbo doesn’t say anything at first, he can’t.

But eventually he manages to remember how to talk well enough to tell Grian just how amazing he looks.

many monsters in pop-culture are designed to be appealing and human-like, especially when they're an important consious subject of action or a second nature of the main character (or a love interest). it's important for many reasons: first, viewers are likely to engage in stories and sympathise with characters which nature, appearance, logic, motivation and other features can be understood. second, it's easier to sell this to potential customers: there are far less people who would like to entertain themselves with lovecraftian horrors than something simple and conventionally beautiful (or something that can be considered beautiful with a little effort). this means some kind of monsters may be universally attractive, like the most popular interpretation of vampires, as you may probably notice with fanon mumbo or hybrids. they may have supernatural abilities, slightly altered bodies, scary details and power supremacy, but generally speaking, they are very close to our natural environment: human-shaped, human-minded, sensible, comprehencible.

consider this: watchers may not be a humanoid kind. they are cosmic creatures that control worlds and feed on emotions. would you expect a form of life from outer space to look like humans, or birds, or some kind of conventional creature from a human mythology? grian is half-human, surely, but in his nearly-watcher form he might be incomprehensible for a human. they might look like anything, from gruesome creatures never shown in any kind of brutal body-horror to abstract terrifying optical illusions that make your eyes unfocus and hurt.

and imagine being transformed into this unwillingfully. imagine being half this. i can't say that it's a curse, because it won't be nearly enough to describe this experience. some people can't bear being watched when they cry because their face turns ugly, and this is probably million times worse than being seen in an uncomfortable situation in a human form.

i think that mumbo might not find him beautiful or amazing or gorgeous in this form. but the most important thing for grian will be that, even having lost his sense of speech, utterly terrified, mumbo will not look away. behind everything in grian's form that would make mumbo freeze and scream in horror, he will see grian. he will still talk to him like a human. he will approach him and give him a hand. he will still consider him the person he deeply cares about.
