embracing my identity as a femme is so interesting, and frustrating at the same time. i feel authentic, and i love being unapologetically feminine and lesbian and looking like a punk miss frizzle.
but thereās the ever present male gaze. the eyes that follow me hungrily, that wouldnāt were i more modest or more masculine. i didnāt fully notice this til i went out with my butch gf and she saw how men stared at me, said she never had that problem.
iāve learned to carry myself as an untouchable dyke, my soft skin and happiness are only for those i choose. iāve learned to embrace āyou can look but you canāt touchā so I can add to my disgust a touch of smugnessā iām desired, but only my butch can touch me, only sheās earned my love.
Iāve learned to glare daggers and walk quickly. When a man calls me his dear I call him buddy. iāve plastered sapphic symbols on many of my possessions. i wear wacky earrings, chunky boots, fishnets and chains. i wear them because i love them of course, but also so you know who i am.
I am unapologetically a femme lesbian, so if it seems being gay is my āpersonality traitā thereās a fucking reason. I can only be seen for what i am if i scream it from the damn rooftops

but anyway!!!!! if youāre tired of period dramas about white lesbians in forbidden love, just watch more movies about wlwoc!!! our movies exist! our stories exist!!! just because they donāt get as much hype as carol/poalof/ammonite doesnāt mean they donāt exist!!! do your research and support more lesbian/bi/trans women filmmakers of colour! support dee rees! support cheryl dunye! support desiree akhavan, maryam keshavarz, sydney freeland, alice wu, tracey choi, shamim sarif, gazal dhaliwal, isabel sandoval, vera egito, vicky du, nisha ganatra, nahnatchka khan, zero chou, just to name a few!! yes it sucks that white stories are given precendence over theirs, but complaining about it while doing nothing to support them isnāt going to fix the problem. we shouldnāt just wait for the content we want to be spoonfed to us. itās important to seek it out.

trans ppl own the word queer
we use it to stay safe so we don't have to constantly announce that we are trans in potentially unsafe company
it originated in the gay community and has always seen common (if regional) use in actual lgbt communes and real-world activism
terfs want to retire the word queer so trans women have to taxonomize themselves to self-identify
there is no other word that serves its purpose
there is nothing distinct about its use as a slur from the word "gay"
i just saw someone get called a "demon" for self-identifying as queer by someone with f*g in their url
im actually over caring how harsh it sounds on yalls ears
blacklist it if it triggers your ptsd that bad
you're not allowed to compromise trans women's safety and demonize our elders because you're sheltered enough to think nono words are the biggest threat to our way of life & you're too ignorant to know your history
i dont care what galaxy brain discourse you saw. i, and every trans woman i know, am telling you that stigmatizing the word queer is choosing terfs over us
cis ppl should reblog this but dont say anything

Being fat has always been likeā¦A Thing in gay communities, fat gay people have always existed, and the fact that there is this culture on tumblr of lifting up skinny, white, rich people who can afford to fit into a certain Artsy Queer Look⢠is really really saddening
This is especially true for butch lesbians!! Why are Masculine Looks⢠always on some skinny Tattoosleeve McSuspenders cookie-cutter model!!
Letās collectively shift the spotlight

I want to give a shoutout to all Asian lesbians, especially the ones who had to grow up not knowing it was possible to like girls, since the mere mention of homosexuality was or still is taboo in our cultures.
I want to give a shoutout to Asian lesbians who are butch or gender non-conforming. Asian women, especially East and Southeast Asians, are portrayed in media as being feminine and submissive, making those of us who do not conform to these stereotypes feel alienated from the porcelain dolls society wants us to be.
I want to give a shoutout to Asian lesbians who still live in Asia. I am fortunate enough to live in a country where I can legally marry a woman I love, and where there are laws in place protecting me from homophobia. Taiwan is going to be the first country in Asia allowing for same sex marriage this year, but that monumental ruling that is going to pave the way for LGBTQ+ rights in Asia was almost thwarted by a referendum in November 2018, when the majority of Taiwanās voters decided that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Fortunately, the Taiwanese government is still going to follow through with allowing same sex marriage before March of 2019, but the majority of countries in Asia still do not have protections in place for us. In some countries, merely expressing our love for other women could lead to our arrests or even deaths.
Asian lesbians do not deserve to be shunned by our families, and god forbid be arrested or killed. We deserve representation, we deserve to be accepted, and we deserve rights.
If youāre an out lesbian living in Asia, I want you to know that I am in awe of your bravery.

Sometimes being a lesbian can be lonely, especially during this time of social distancing, it feels like there are so few of us. I wanted to make something for pride month featuring real life lesbians in the public eye. You are real, you are valid, and you are valued.
[Terfs DO NOT TOUCH]
*ok for non-lesbians to reblog!

10 LGBT+ classic rock stars that aren't Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, or Elton John
Pete Townshend
Pete is best known as the tall, short tempered energetic guitarist and writer of almost all of the songs by The Who. He was the member who came up with their trademark move of smashing the instruments at the end of each show, and became a voice for youth at the time with one of their many hits 'Talkin 'Bout My Generation.' He came out in his memoir as well as an interview in 1989, saying he was bisexual, and also said he identified as both a woman and a man, saying: "I know how if feels to be a woman because I am a woman, and I won't be classified as just a man."

Debbie Harry
Lead singer and writer for the band Blondie, she's a bisexual woman well known for her colourful taste in fashion and unmistakable voice. Her musical career started out in the punk genre but she is best known for writing and singing some of the most popular new wave songs including Heart of Glass, Call Me, and One Way or Another.

Janis Joplin
Often cited as the face of American blues, folk, soul and rock, Janis Joplin is WLW and had numerous relationships with men and women in her life. She was famed for her distinctive husky voice and powerful and captivating stage presence that left audiences stunned.

Dave Davies
The guitarist in 60s British invasion group The Kinks revealed he was bisexual in his autobiography in 1997. The more outgoing of the Davies brothers in the band, of which he had a difficult and fiery relationship with, Dave also experimented with makeup and women's clothing in the 60s and 70s. Many people claim his riffs were the very earliest beginnings of heavy metal.

Sir Ray Davies
Ray Davies wrote and sung most of The Kink's songs, including their most successful song Lola, which is about a transgender woman. Although quieter and more laid back than his brother, he does not have a quiet tongue either. His endless brotherly quarrels with Dave continue to this day, although they live next door to one another. He is MLM.

Kim Deal
As well as playing Bass for the late 80s indie rock band The Pixies and fronting the 90s band The Breeders, Kim Deal has studied and worked in cellular biology. She has said that she is asexual and also identifies as a feminist. Kim Deal has a unique philosophy in recording music, as she uses no modern means of production such as digital recording, computers, and auto tuning.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Recognised as the inventor of rock and roll, Tharpe was a pioneer for combining blues and gospel to create a unique sound partnered with her electric guitar as early as the late 30s. She is WLW. Her relationship with Marie Knight became a controversial topic when it was discovered by the public, especially from her religious background.

Rob Halford
Singer and songwriter of the popular heavy metal band Judas Priest, Rob was initially uneasy about coming out as gay due to heavy metal's often homophobic following, but was surprised when he was overwhelmingly supported. He now calls himself the 'stately homo of heavy metal' and speaks openly about the ongoing struggles that LGBT+ people face.

Marc Bolan
In 1971, a tiny 5"4 Marc Boland performed in his band T-Rex on Top Of The Pops wearing glitter under his eyes. This is widely recognised as the starting point of the glam rock movement. He had relationships with men and women in his life, and came out as bisexual in 1975. He was Jewish and he became a style icon of the 70s for his corkscrew hair, colourful fashion and whimsical happy-go-lucky attitude.

Lou Reed
Lou Reed's infamously dry humour and deadpan voice set him apart from other rock stars of his time. As a child his parents put him in a mental hospital and he was given electric shock therapy to try and 'cure' his interest in men. He grew in popularity in the 60s as The Velvet Underground's lead singer and guitarist and went on to have a successful solo career, where he frequently wrote and sung about LGBT people. Reed is MLM and also Jewish!
