(the 永 and 義 took me like a solid hour full of undo’s to write lmao and then I didn’t even try to make the hello look nice XD). but anyway…

This brush is the result of 5 years of tweaking the settings on a regular circle brush to slowly refine it for ultimate control. I’ve posted various iterations of it on this site over the years but I made a breakthrough today. Finally managed to get the “na” 捺 stroke out of it, so this might actually be the final version. :D (it’s the first four dots in upper left corner of the image… it also features in the 永 character)

I mainly tried to mimic the line from a wet Pentel pocket brush pen:

Two caveats though:

It doesn’t handle like a real brush. The tablet pen acts as the bristles, not the brush handle, so in practical use it’s a lot of twirling the pen around instead of however you’re supposed to use a brush.

Because of the extreme reliance on tilt settings, you must have a higher-end tablet that supports tilt sensitivity or the brush is non-functional, sorry. (if you turn off tilt settings, it’s just a bog-standard circle brush and I guarantee you already have it lol (well, not quite, it also uses velocity to control the brush size, but that’s still just ticking off a box on the default brushes)

Notes from “The Animator’s Survival Kit” book.

[Pg.259 - 265]  This is the end of my book studies. I’m pretty proud to have gotten through it and do a handful of the exercises. But this is only step one, I’m moving onto more advance animation techniques and will be posting those as I complete them. At the moment I’m currently wrestling with Toon Boom, so we’ll see how that goes.
