One thing I am really looking forward to in the True Form Arc
I am really looking forward to an understated but powerful moment after Kyo’s true form is revealed….when everyone closes the blinds.
The first shot of this is Yuki, who covers his face but still leaves enough room for him to see if need be. He would just have to duck down, but that would require purposeful action on his part. He can’t accidentally see what’s going on out there, he would have to make the choice to. He’s essentially placed himself between a rock and a hard place.
He knows what’s happening out there.
He knows something terrible just occurred….but he chooses to keep his body turns towards the event but cover his view.
He’s aware of what’s happening, but doesn’t want to be.
Next is Shigure and Kagura.
Shigure has already turned away from the event. He was warned prior to and has distanced himself from the messy things occurring on his lawn. He watches Kagura to see her reaction and she does something that I didn’t expect the first time I read this. Up until this point, Kagura’s love for Kyo has been shown to be passionate, over the top, obsessive, and that she would do ANYTHING for him. But when something truly terrible happens to him….she shuts the curtains.
This moment haunts me to this day, because this was the moment I finally understood Kyo’s role and isolation in the curse. Up until this point in the story, Kyo spoke how he was isolated in general terms (the cat isn’t part of the zodiac, lives with the people who don’t know about the curse instead of the inside level, and can’t go to the banquet dinner); nevertheless, Kyo was always demonstrated to be close with his family up to this point in the series.
He trains with Haru.
He has a older brother like relationship with Momiji and Hiro (in some ways )
Ayame calls him by a cute nickname that he hates
Shigure lets him live with him
Kagura is in love with him
He is friendly enough with Kisa, Hatori, and Ritsu
In many ways, he’s shown to be closer to them then the person he envies, Yuki. Yuki was isolated from them throughout childhood and maintains much more formal relationships with them as teens. I mean, look at the first ED…
But in that moment, I got it.
Despite everything, Kyo is something that they wish to turn away from at the worst of times. They like human Kyo, he’s their funny and easily annoyed cousin. Kyo helps them learn to kick better, outruns Kagura’s love tackles (sometimes), and gives noogies to Momiji when he acts up. But that monster is something we don’t talk about.
Something we ignore.
Something that we hate and fear despite how much we say we love Kyo.
Kyo has been given the message that no matter how good of terms he’s on with his family, they will never care for all of him. Part of him, will always be a monster. I mean, they even refer to it as his “true” form. Everyone else “turns into animals of the zodiac” but that monster *IS* Kyo in their eyes.
And he is trapped holding that knowledge forever.

Kagura had everything figured out in the fourth episode!
Kagura really summed up Kyohru too well
“Yeah, why WOULDN’T she love him? That’s like the stupidest question ever! Anyway I know he’s head over heels for HER!”
#kagura is so underrated#she deserves better#kagura sohma#kyo sohma#tohru honda#fruits basket#furuba

Kyo and the 5 Stages of Grief-
(SPOILER WARNINGS) Kyo absolutely goes through all five stages of grief about Kyoko, the stages are moved around and combined, so some people probably missed the signs.
1- Right After the Death
Depression: Immediately after Kyoko’s death, he went into a deep depression and Kazuma knew it was bad, so he took Kyo away for four months to try to help him with the depression.

2- Four Months-A year After Death
This is where people would miss it and what I mean by combined stages.
Bargaining: Kyo shifts the blame onto Yuki to make himself feel better. “If it’s the rats fault, I don’t have to feel so horrible anymore.”

Anger: He came off as very irritable at the start. He was a lot more susceptible to fits of rage and fighting when he first moved into Shigure’s house (not too long after Kyoko’s death).

Denial: People probably don’t remember how he was in denial. He was in denial by completely refusing to acknowledge Tohru as “Tohru Honda: Kyoko’s daughter.” That’s why he never used her name until True Form arc, he was in complete denial about acknowledging Kyoko and her daughter.

3- One Year-Two Years After Death
More combined stages.
Acceptance: The beginning of his road for acceptance was at the beach. After talking to Akito, he finally accepted his feeling for Tohru, but also accepted the reality and guilt of Kyoko’s death.

Denial: He was still in denial at this time, but it shifted to being about deserving love and a happy life. He only fully accepted everything that happened with Kyoko and released his guilt/denial when he decided he truly wanted to have a happy life and be with Tohru.

But yeah, that’s what I view how Kyo went through the 5 Stages of Grief. If you guys have a differing opinion or want to add your own 2 cents, let me know!
