Ossan's love returns and the spinach of acceptance

Now that I've subbed the episode, I would like to talk about a moment that made me tear up. For me this is up there in the hall of fame of coming out scenes. It's so simple and that's why it's so powerful.

Maki spends most of the episode stressed out about Haruta's mom's upcoming visit. It's not their first time meeting each other, but to Haruta's mom Haruta and Maki are friends. Maki has to host his mother-in-law and come out to her all in one sitting. He feels remorseful for having kept the truth from her.

Throughout the episode, Maki feels like he has to make up for something. He feels like he has to overcompensate for being gay: make himself and the house as presentable as possible, impress his mother-in-law with his cooking. Haruta is a terrible cook and will never have a wife to cook for him, Maki has made sure of that. It frustrates him that Haruta is too optimistic to have internalised this. Haruta hasn't even considered a world where his mom won't accept them.

Maki puts so much pressure on himself to become this ideal son-in-law. Maybe they'll reject him for being gay, but at least there won't be anything else about him to criticise. His standards for himself are so high he can't reach them. He can't live up to his own expectations which he imagines must be everyone else's expectations of him.

For food, Maki decides to make fried chicken because it's their thing. It's something he is confident in making because Haruta is always praising him. But then Haruta's mom won't eat chicken and suggests Japanese food and the pressure on Maki is about to crush him.

He tries his hand at classic recipes, but nothing feels good enough. Eventually Kurosawa comes to save the day, and Maki feels inferior, like he's letting everyone down. He can't effortlessly put together a full course meal like Kurosawa, not when he's nervous and sleep-deprived to boot. He is able to make something, though, even if quite small. He makes spinach ohitashi, a simple dish made with blanched spinach.

Haruta's mom arrives then. It's a little awkward as meetings with in-laws can be, but not hostile or unpleasant. After all the anxious build-up, Haruta's mom's reaction to their coming out is an almost mundane oh, okay.

The real punch, however, comes later.

Maki glances over at the table of leftovers. Most of Kurosawa's abundant cooking has been left unfinished. There is one dish in particular that hasn't, though: Haruta's mom has eaten all of Maki's spinach ohitashi.

It really was that simple.

Maki was the best son-in-law for this family all along.
