Hi everyone, itās FRIDAY and time for another book haul š Here I have two @illumicrate exclusive editions that arrived before the end of the year and a lovely clothbound classic, The Aeneid which I read with a great group of bookstagrammers and really enjoyed. The Luminaries looks absolutely beautiful. āIn Hemlock Falls, where nightmares rise, only the Luminaries stand between humanity and these monsters bent on devastation. Winnie Wednesday knows the only way to redeem her disgraced family is to pass the Luminary trials, but when she encounters an unknown monster, she realises she must also protect Hemlock Falls and her heart from a former friend with secrets of his own.ā Then we have The Red Scholarās Wake which Iām initially a bit unsure of but weāll give it a go! Itās described as āan exciting space opera and a beautiful romance, from an exceptional SF author.ā Iād love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. A Fire Endless is the second book in the Elements Of Cadence series and just as fantastical and entertaining as the first book. This is the story of two clans, East and West, Breccans and Tamerlaines and it follows the people of these lands who are struggling to be at peace with each other and also appease the spirits of fire, earth, sky, wind and water. ā£ ā£ In this instalment, (without giving too much away from the first book!), we find a particular spirit, Bane the spirit of the North Wind wreaking havoc over both lands leading the Tamerlane bard Jack and the heiress of the East, Adaira struggling to find new ways to ease their struggles. Meanwhile, Torin and Sidra are having to cope with a new menace, a deadly and mysterious sickness that leads Torin on a mission to ask the spirits for help before more lives are lost. ā£ ā£ I buddy read this series with @keeperofpages and it was such a lovely world to escape to, filled with magical moments and unforgettable characters. I felt I identified more with Torin and Sidra, particularly the latter, who is a wonderfully brave and sympathetic medicine woman for the East. I also greatly appreciated that the romance elements were tasteful and never the full focus or drive of the narrative. ā£ ā£ This is a brilliant book for fans of fantasy and those beautiful other-worldly elements that take you to a different time and place. It was engaging, exciting and adventurous and I look forward to picking up more from this author in the future. ā£ ā£ Four solid stars š š š š ā£ #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingonthegram #reviewingbooksonthegram #elementsofcadence #rebeccaross #afireendless #illumicrateeditions #beautifulbooksofinstagram #booksandplantsšµš #stencillededgeswelove #fantasyduologies https://www.instagram.com/p/CqKhmkvr09_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! Itās Wednesday, weāre almost at the end of the week and today Iām sharing my #top3under300 - that is, 3 books under 300 pages that I would highly recommend. I could have chosen so many more but these three were near the front of my book trolley so there we go! What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky is one of my favourite short story collections. There was one story that actually made me gasp at the end, it was brilliant! Charlotteās Web is one of my favourite childrenās books, despite being a huge arachnophobe! I love Fernās relationship with Wilbur the pig and of course, the ending š Finally, The Mermaid Of Black Conch was one of my favourite books of last year. I know itās not everyoneās cup of tea but I thought it was such an original, beautiful piece of work š #bookstagramuk #bookstagramchallenge #scottishbookstagrammer #whatitmeanswhenamanfallsfromthesky #lesleynnekaarimah #charlottesweb #ebwhite #themermaidofblackconch #moniqueroffey #recommendedreadsš #shortbooksiswhereitsat #fivestarreadsš¤© #readthesebooksnow https://www.instagram.com/p/CqGlm0ILYdg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I donāt think Iām ever going to be able to do justice to this incredible book or the previous ones in Elizabeth Stroutās series featuring Lucy Barton, her family and the characters who have interacted with her at some point in the past. By the end of this book, I felt a bittersweet nostalgia for what I had read so far and hope (for more Lucy Barton in the future!).ā£ ā£ Lucy By The Sea focuses on those recent (awful) pandemic years when we went into lockdown. Just before, Lucyās ex-husband William convinces Lucy for her own safety to move from her home in Manhattan and hole up with him in a house by the sea in Maine. We then follow Lucyās experiences living with William again, making new friends, the terror that the pandemic brought and how Lucy copes and supports her loved ones as they undergo their own individual challenges. ā£ ā£ Iāve always been keen to read about situations like the pandemic for example in fiction, or perhaps issues that Iāve had challenges with myself. I find it quite cathartic and in a strange way, comforting - like Iām not alone. Lucy And The Sea fulfilled all of this for me and as a result, made for quite an emotional reading experience. ā£ ā£ I really love Lucy as a character. She feels so complicated and so genuine that it feels completely natural to empathise with her. Additionally, weāve lived through a crazy few years recently, and sometimes itās nice to get that reminder of how things were at the height of the crisis. Itās almost reassuring to think - we did this, we made it (!) through some really tough times whilst we grieve for those that sadly did not. ā£ ā£ Lucy By The Sea is such a gorgeous piece of writing which surpassed all my expectations. I already want to reread the entire series and I canāt wait to explore more from this author. ā£ Thanks to lovely @edels_reads for arranging the buddy read of this series! š ā£ Five perfect stars š š š š š #bookstagramuk #reviewingbooksonthegram #lucybythesea #elizabethstrout #lucybartonbooks #lucybartonseries #fivestarreads2023 #characterstofallinlovewith #booksaboutthepandemic #favouriteauthorā¤ļø #booksandplantsšµš https://www.instagram.com/p/CqD8KhGA1M7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! Itās a new week and you know what that means. Book haul! (two of which I have already read - The Memory Of Animals and The Warden). AD-PR PRODUCT - I was kindly sent The Memory Of Animals, @writerclairefuller new book out on the 20th April from the lovely Jasmin at @vikingbooksuk Iāll be reviewing it closer to release date but I just want to say WOW šš The Warden is the first novel in Trollopeās Chronicles Of Barsetshire. It was my first introduction to Anthony Trollopeās work and I really enjoyed it. Finally, the #keeperofkingbookclub hosted by @keeperofpages read the epic Swan Song last year as it had been compared to Stephen Kingās The Stand. We all enjoyed it so much that we decided to add another Robert McCammon to our reading list this year! Itās described as a ārichly imagined, spellbinding portrait of the magical worldview of the young - and of innocence lost.ā Iād love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Our Share Of Night spoke to me for a multitude of reasons - firstly, the eye-catching artwork on the front cover and a ābuy me now,ā synopsis and that itās also a work of translated fiction (by Megan McDowell). Janel from @keeperofpages and I knew we simply had to read it together as it was ticking every single one of our fictional boxes. ā£ ā£ This is not a story for the faint-hearted. At its core, this is a novel that doesnāt hold back on horrific violence, disturbing imagery and a slightly fever dream turn of narrative. It follows a father and son, Juan and Gaspar who have recently lost their wife/mother. Juan is constantly on the move with his son to try and protect him from his motherās demonic family. However, itās not long before Juan can no longer deny the part he has to play in a terrifying and dangerous ritual. ā£ ā£ This book is so imaginative and unlike anything Iāve ever read before. I didnāt know what was going on for the vast majority of the story but the writing is so captivating and richly detailed that I really didnāt care for any minor confusion I might have felt. Does it always make sense? Not really but itās worth every bit of effort, especially if youāre a fan of something a little bit different. ā£ ā£ Our Share Of Night is full of heady, fantastical moments which coupled with the tension and horror, makes for an incredibly vivid and engaging read, if of course you are able to handle the more gruesome and perhaps more triggering aspects of the story. I am so eager now to get to the other two Mariana Enriquez books I have on my shelves - this is an author that has caught my attention with such a unique and powerful story. ā£ ā£ Five perfect stars š š š š š ā£ #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreviewingisfun #reviewingbooksonthegram #ourshareofnight #marianaenriquez #translatedfictionreview #buddyreadswithjanel #horrorfictionwriting #fivestarreads2023 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp-6WIsrteo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Itās the end of the week and Iām celebrating with a book haul. Shockingly enough I have already read two of these books - The Odyssey (review on the grid) and A Fire Endless (review coming soon!) I really enjoyed The Odyssey and will definitely be re-reading it in the future. A Fire Endless is the follow up to Rebecca Rossā A River Enchanted in the Elements Of Cadence series. Finally The Dance Tree, which has been on my radar for a while and I finally gave in just before Christmas last year š (yes Iām very behind on hauls š). Itās a historical novel set in 16th century France about a real phenomenon - hundreds of women dancing all day without a break that led to a state of emergency being declared! āSet in an era of superstition, hysteria and extraordinary change, and inspired by true events, The Dance Tree is an impassioned story of family secrets, forbidden love and women pushed to the edge.ā Iād love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Far From The Madding Crowd is one of Thomas Hardyās most famous novels and one Iāve been gleefully anticipating reading for a long time now. It follows our fiercely independent heroine Bathsheba Everdene, as she comes to the area of Weatherbury, determined to make her mark as a farmer. ā£ ā£ It wouldnāt be Hardy without a train of suitors eager to fall in love with the female lead so we are introduced to three very different men. There is Gabriel Oak, a loyal shepherd, who met Bathsheba before and now works for her on her farm. Then there is fellow farmer and perfect gentleman Boldwood who also has history with Bathsheba after she writes an ill-advised letter to him, soon to regret her actions when he responds to it. Finally, there is brash and confident soldier Sergeant Troy who catches her attention immediately. ā£ ā£ I always worry that Iām going to get tired of Hardyās patterns in fiction, particularly the multiple suitors but for some reason, it never gets old and he manages to flesh out his characters so that they stand on their own in terms of individuality and memorability. As always, I hugely appreciate the attention to detail in terms of his female leads and their attitudes/strong personalities. ā£ ā£ Bathsheba was a fascinating character with so many different layers and it was lovely to read about an honest, flawed and opinionated woman who isnāt afraid to be ambitious and driven in her quest to better herself. Furthermore, this isnāt your typical Hardy tragedy where youāre just waiting for the literary axe to fall - it was a surprisingly gentle finale which wrapped up events perfectly. Definitely on my re-read list for the future! ā£ ā£ Four solid stars š š š š #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreviewš #farfromthemaddingcrowd #thomashardyfarfromthemaddingcrowd #thomashardyfans #booksandplantsšµš #penguinclothboundcollection #reviewingbooksonthegram #classicnovelsnevergetold #classicnovellovers https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp3K_LQLIYQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A few years ago now, I read two of Kate Quinnās absolutely brilliant Empress of Rome series and really loved them. Then for some reason I canāt pinpoint, she slipped off my radar and I didnāt explore any more of her historical fiction. Well, thank goodness for the members of #hfbookclub choosing The Rose Code as our monthly buddy read. It reminded me of how fantastic the authors writing is and how beautifully she develops her characters. ā£ ā£ The Rose Code is set in 1940 in the UK where specific women are being asked to help with the war effort in the mysterious and top secret Bletchley Park. Three very different young women, Osla a sparkling debutante dating Prince Philip of Greece, forthright and sensible Mab and quiet genius Beth who has a knack for difficult puzzles. ā£ ā£ All women assist to some degree with the decoding of enemy messages but as the story unravels, we find out much more about each woman as an individual. We know about difficulties in their past, stresses in their present and worries for their future. However, by 1947, one woman is confined to an asylum and the friendship between the three has been destroyed. ā£ ā£ This is primarily a story of war and loss for our female leads who undergo an incredible amount of pressure in both their working and personal lives, during such a tumultuous time for the world. Itās a narrative rich and detailed with so many different layers and avenues to explore that itās a pleasure to get lost in it. The characters burst off the page with their individuality and vibrant personalities to the point where I felt truly attached to them as the story progressed. ā£ ā£ It appears I now need to read everything Rose Quinn has ever written, š this is a stonkingly good read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! ā£ ā£ 4.5 stars š š š š š« ā£ ā£ ā£#bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingonmykindle #therosecode #katequinn #historicalfictionreview #reviewingbooksonthegram #unforgettablereads #highlyrecommendedbooks #booksandplantsšµš #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutworldwar2 ā£ https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpx6n2BLprs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone, itās a new week! Iāve had quite an interesting day being on an interview panel and my brain is ready to go to sleep š“ but hereās a book haul of three paperbacks I treated myself to just before Xmas - because why not? š¤£ Purple Hibiscus is the story of 15 year old Kambili and her older brother Jaja who lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria. āThey live in a beautiful house, with a caring family, and attend an exclusive missionary school. Theyāre completely shielded from the troubles of the world. Yetā¦things are less perfect than they appear.ā This is the only novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that I havenāt read and Iām looking to it! Next up, I knew absolutely nothing about These Bones Are Not My Child but was compelled to pick it up from the title and the cover alone! It was written over twelve years and Toni Morrison said it was āa magnum opusā¦puts the reader at the heart of the horror that came to be called the Atlanta child murders.ā Finally, Station Eleven which I have already read but only in the Kindle version. I love buying physical copies of my favourite books if Iāve read them digitally. Does anyone else do that? Iād love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. I think there are moments in every bookworms life where they crave something completely gripping, page-turning and unputdownable. The Perfect Child, which I had never heard of before my sister @chrissireads loaned it to me, gives the reader all of this and then some! I honestly wasnāt expecting the reactions I had whilst reading this novel and although there may be a few trigger warnings, I managed to distance myself from my own personal experience and just enjoy a rollicking good story!ā£ ā£ This is the story of Christopher and Hannah, successful in their careers as a surgeon and a nurse but sadly have been struggling with trying to conceive a child. They come into contact with Janie at the hospital, an abandoned six year old who forms an instant connection with Christopher. If they decided to adopt her, could this be the answer to all their problems? Well, no. ā£ ā£ Janie comes with buckets of trauma, development issues and acts out in increasingly disturbing ways, especially against Hannah who she has struggled to bond with. Itās a tense, nail-biting and terrifying and rollercoaster of a novel that proves difficult to forget and will linger on long after youāve read the final page. ā£ ā£ This compelling and thrilling story was everything I needed to escape into a narrative that got under my skin and at points, gave me genuine chills. Janie is a character unlike any other that Iāve ever read and I was unashamedly here for every single moment she appeared on the pages. ā£ ā£ A brilliant five stars š š š š š #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingandreviewtime #reviewingbooksonthegram #theperfectchild #lucindaberry #myfavouritethrillers #unforgettableread #booksandplantsšµš #scarychildrenfreakmeout #thrillernovelsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cps1WDarStj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is one of those novels that popped up everywhere with everyone talking about it, and unless youāve been off social media for a little while, Iām sure you must have heard the buzz. Initially, I wasnāt sure, I have to admit. It seemed like ājustā a story about gamers and while Iāve enjoyed a computer game in the past (how old do I sound? š), Iāve never been seriously into it. ā£ ā£ Tomorrow x3 is so much more than it appears to be on the surface and Iām glad I gave it a chance. This is a love story, a friendship story and a remarkably original piece of work that kept a non-gamer like me completely hooked, despite the odd element of coding and game jargon that I confess sometimes went completely over my head. It didnāt matter. ā£ ā£ You see, itās not really about the gaming. Itās the story of Sam and Sadie, best friends and gaming addicts who meet at a young age in less than ideal circumstances but bond over their love of computer games. A chance meeting later in life brings them back together and they create a game, Ichigo which becomes a worldwide phenomenon. This is the story of their friendship, who they fall in life with and how their undeniable bond is tested through their lives and by different people. ā£ ā£ This is a novel with so much heart and love poured into both the characters and the plot. The characters are so richly detailed and authentic that youāll know them almost as well as you know yourself by the end of the book. There are several quiet, meandering moments where it feels as if the plot may have stalled but believe me, itās a clever tactic by the author in preparation for a perfect storm. And when it hits? You wonāt want to put the book down. ā£ ā£ Five perfect stars š š š š š #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #hypedbooksofinstagram #tomorrowandtomorrowandtomorrow #gabriellezevin #reviewingbooksonthegram #readingbooksofinstagram #believethehypeā¼ļø #fivestarreads2023 #beautifulbooksofinstagram #booksaboutgaming #unforgettablereads #illberereadingthis https://www.instagram.com/p/CpnpMyVIk7g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
