Does Azula actually turn against her father by the end of the show?

So most post-canon headcanons have Azula thinking she completely failed her father and still seeks forgiveness from him. 

However, by the end of the show canon, what if she didn’t want to do that? Note that this scenario ignores the comics.

We see that when she banishes Lo and Li, the first point of suspicion was when she thought they were sent by her father. And then she proceeds to say “I’I’ll show him, I will become the Greatest Leader in Fire Nation History.” She’ll show HIM, she’ll be the GREATEST leader.

He left her behind and implied she wasn’t important to her. She wants to prove him wrong. Ty Lee and Mai betrayal hurt her, but the camel on the straw’s back was actually her father betraying her. She wants to succeed him, and show him his judgment is false, and get him back for scarring her heart the most.

The idea that an Azula who’s paranoid has gone rogue against her father, the last to betray her seems interest, and I think more fics could explore it

if anything they could have paralleled aang and azula. both children with crazy expectations at a young age, having to carry the weight of their country on their shoulders. azula was also aang’s greatest opponent

Unpopular Opinion: ATLA (particularly in Books 1 and 2) tried to push the idea of Zuko and Aang paralleling each other, but it never really worked since they’re just too different as people.

I think generally people see post-recovery Azula as an advisor to zuko. Personally I don’t think that fits? At the very least, not for the rest of her life. (She’s spent the first 14 years of her life stuck in the palace taking orders from the fire lord, and now you’re asking her to do that all over again?) I think one possible path she could go is education, not just being a firebending master, but more higher education. She’s a nerd and super dedicated as well. She could also help people like her—feral genius stormchildren. And she could make some groundbreaking discoveries as well—we all know she was destined for greatness. Any thoughts about her being a very grumpy professor?

I actually love "cranky academic" as a possible future path that's both healthy and can allow her some amount of recognition for her skills. Politics could work and she'd certainly be good at that, but I tend to hc that canon!Azula's role was always to play advisor to first Lu Ten and then Zuko when either became Fire Lord. That she was pretty much raised to be the Fire Lord's right hand, which explains why she slid so easily into explaining things for Zuko (that he "should know") and also why she seemed downright surprised by the notion of actually becoming Fire Lord when it was presented to her.

She was raised to know how the system worked, but never to be the one who actually sat in the chair.

So yes, while she'd be good at it and has the training that Zuko lacks, it also very much falls into the old patterns of how she was raised. To say nothing about how it reinforces a notion of how her place must be in service as a tool to a male relative. (The case is a bit different if she holds political power in her own right and is somehow not beholden to Zuko or Iroh.)
