i still can’t believe that some of the most profound representation of lesbians, queer women, the trans experience, the power of feminine energy without being gender essentialist I’ve ever read… was written by a cishet man.

i really don’t mean to put one author on a pedestal, Terry Pratchett had his faults and blind spots, but you could tell his heart was in the right place when it came to writing. Monstrous Regiment means a lot to me, but Cheery Littlebottom? She was a joke, a punchline. Not a mean-spirited one, just a natural conclusion of the joke of “if all Dwarves look the same regardless of gender, and get treated the same, then wouldn’t it be funny if one wanted to be treated as a woman?”. And it is funny and ridiculous, and as far as I’m aware Pterry wanted to poke fun at a fantasy trope without her being explicitly trans. But then he gets serious with it? The way Vimes os confused at each bit of make up but accepts it when he realises no it’s not a bruise it’s eyeshadow. The way Angua immediately is supportive? The way Cheery tries out different aspects of feminine presentation but dials it back if something doesn’t work? She has several scenes when the gang goes to her homeland, and supports her with “you call her a slur you’ll be in massive trouble” and when she wants to wear an atrociously ugly dress they’re still encouraging. And then, at the end, Cheery decides that she doesn’t need to present hyper feminine, she’s a female Dwarf and she knows it, and she doesn’t need to prove it to anyone. dunno, it feels like a lot of that comes from deep compassion for the human experience, I’m glad to have those books now.

and now that I’m nearly done with the Witches and Tiffany Aching books? Maybe it’s raising a daughter, but the way Pterry writes young girls and women, their cattiness and cruelty towards other women? It feels… it feels really well observed in a way that isn’t just a misogynist “women be fighting” thing. I like that “actually I’ll be good friends with my ex boyfriend’s fiancé” is a thing that happens
