True story about me: when I first read LWW, I had not been substantially exposed to Christian theology or mythology. I had been exposed to Arthuriana, Pyrdain, and Disney's Robin Hood though, so I thought Aslan was Arthur.
I had also been exposed to some anti-drug messaging but not mediocre premodern confectionery, so I thought Turkish Delight was a euphemism for DRUGS.
no way i just saw people in tiktok comments crying screaming throwing up at the idea of aslan being a jesus figure. worsties the lion literally dies to save edmund (the sinner) and then rises from the dead. he tells the pevensies he can be found under a different name in our world. what else could this have meant

What a bizarre fucking question. What an insane result.
have you ever attended a non-christian funeral?
by non-christian, i mean like, there’s not a preacher speaking/bible reading/hymns sung, etc. i’m just curious cause i’m sure they happen, i’ve just never been to one i guess?

on the other other hand, Elayne fucks up real bad constantly and Nynaeve is basically right about everything all the time. Sometimes pushy is justifiable.
when she gently pointed out things that Nynaeve did not know, the woman was quite capable of accusing her of having an arrogant manner, or of lecturing
While Nynaeve is indeed a prickly person, one has to wonder how condescending Elayne was being.

Notably, of course, while her eyeshadow/eyeliner/mascara game is iconic, she normally either doesn't wear lipstick or wears a subtle shade.
the whole "lipstick on a pig" thing makes no sense because the second we gave a pig access to makeup she became god's cuntiest soldier

Court of Song. Blah blah another music is magic setting. Whatever.
Spin this wheel first and then this wheel second to generate the title of a YA fantasy novel!
(If the second wheel lands on an option ending with a plus sign, spin it again)

I have seen exactly one Edge of Eternities preview-card (The Seriema), and now I'm very-excited to see more Spacecraft. That mechanic is tailor-made to have relevant cards for my cube. Charge counters, AND they're artifacts, AND they care about power... Sign me up! I look forward to reading all the red and colorless ones when the set is fully spoiled, and I very much hope that there are lots of them that do different things, at different power levels, so that I can find the right ones.
There might be more Stations. : )

Woman: "I'm somewhat concerned that exposure to rote-sequence industrial-production porn has habituated a significant number of heterosexual men to go for unlubricated anal during an initial sexual encounter with a partner. I'm not saying we should ban porn but we should talk about this."
Replies: "all human experience and action under industrial capitlaism is rote repetition, the logic of Fordism overcoming any personal will. We might as well cut out our tongues as question what effect watching the same algorithmically-selected sequence of porn acts over and over again while masturbating could have!"
I don't think porn qua porn is harmful, I don't think there's any harm in watching sex videos or whatever, but from my experience on dating apps and such it does seem to me that the experience of looking for porn encourages you to think of your sexuality in strangely discretized..."Marketed" ways, almost? There's a whole ecosystem of terminology, terminology people choose to get their porn seen, and because porn is so private, many people mostly think about what gets them off in the context of trying to interface with search algorithms and recommendation systems, using these terms. And this can lead to an almost "stereotyped" conception of one's own sexuality? I don't think the underlying sexuality is changing that much due to the porn. But I think it's easy to round off your experiences into a set of porn boxes. Which seems bad, on some "culture critique" level. Like it alienates you from your own desires
#the above is probably not her exact concern#but sub in 'names acceptable to call a partner of a certain identity'#or 'places it is ok to grab and squeeze without having a significant discussion first'#or the whole host of shit that's totally normal in porn but buckwild if not fully planned in advance

you know who laios reminds me of? orion lake, from the scholomance books. singleminded enthusiasm for monsters, always looks out for his friends even though he misses a lot of the actual dynamics happening around him of how people might think him weird or be using him
and, yknow, treating The Horrors like it’s bottomless brunch

Ophelia is the most fascinating character in the series. She is the bogeyman El's been scared of and scared of turning into the entire time: a pure maleficer. She is completely unrepentant! She has an ethical system that justifies her actions! She's not completely wrong! She sat down and did the math and said "better one class of children than all children forever." She had to do the most horrible thing imaginable and she did it inside her own body. She is a magical ecofascist degrowther and she is terrifying.
The funny thing about El's fury towards Orion's parents is that it is never ever correct, except that one time when she's furious about what they literally physically made him into, that he cannot escape, and which really is basically unforgivable.
At first El's furious because she thinks they treated him like a hero his whole life when he's obviously a person. Only then it turns out he's never actually much acted like a person. And the only reason he became the boy she loves is because his mother taught him to use his mal-murdering impulses in heroic ways - in protection of others.
By the end of the book El finally correctly identifies the human boy Orion as having been shaped enormously POSITIVELY by wanting to be a hero. He DID want to be a hero. Not for the hero-worship, correct, because he doesn't care particularly for being around other humans, and because it doesn't feel right when it's an instinctive hunger, but because he's been shaped his whole life to want to be that, that protective weapon. Because: it allowed him to conceptualise his hunger as protectiveness. A mawmouth isn't a hero, or a protective weapon. Orion is. His mother made him the heroic boy El loves.
El doesn't want to see it, but Ophelia tried to make Orion as human as she possibly could. She offered him other interests, encouraged and even forced him to socialise, provided him love and care and what made him happy (killing mals), and impressed upon him not just basic manners but also the mental concept of 'protector' to apply to himself, AND the basic capacity to respond to El in a human way when she came along and triggered his interest in being a fully social being. She made sure the boy in and around the mawmouth absorbed enough that he really was a developed human.
But I dont think El can ever see it that way. Orion can, however, i think, which is why he forgives her.

See that's the thing about Liesel. She's willing to trade sex for what she wants, but given the opportunity (and she's given it!) she'd much rather trade her unbelievable skill and drive for what she wants, but she also figures "you are worth hanging around, we might as well fuck."
Like I'm pretty sure Alfie wants her for London and his family's faction there more than he wants to get in her pants, but he's not gonna say no. Similarly, while she dangles the hook out for El pretty early on, I'm also pretty sure that she doesn't make the affirmative move herself until she's already decided she's fully On The El Train and she figures "I'm probably going to be following this chick around for the next couple of decades, we're both already stressed out to the point of collapse, we should see if we're mutually compatible for stress-boning."
ONE MORE THING
Liesel is actually an incredible character?? BECAUSE she 'sleeps her way up'. It's so nuanced and uncondemned that I didn't even realise what a subversion she is. She 'sleeps with'/'seduces' Alfie to better her prospects and make her ambitions possible.
The implication of that nasty condemnation of women sleeping their way up in the workplace is that they get an unfair advantage and leg up because they do something as disgusting as trade sex without having any actual relevant skills or merit.
But Liesel is valedictorian i.e. she is the most accomplished, hard-working and competent person in the whole year. She is the most competent leader of her generation.
If anyone should get on top for merit, it's her. But she won't, because the system doesn't reward competence with power, only relative safety.
So she 'seduces' people i.e. offers mutual commitments to people by a classic schema i.e. a relationship that includes sex.
She uses sex transactionally, trades it as one part of the deal/package. She makes that very clear, which is why El keeps thinking later that she will want to be repaid. (As well as for other services/help rendered. )
I just love how El goes: well fair enough. Because it IS a fair deal. Alfie and Liesel have a symbiotic relationship going on where they provide each other with what they both need and want. El even sees how it'd be a fair deal for her, and the offer of sex is really just a sweetener - AND a shorthand for: we'd be partners in life.
#she is probably the first in their age group to even partly realize how big a deal El is#she probably also figured any slender leash on the earthquake that walks like a girl is a good idea

I love to cook, but for weeknights, I have abandoned recipes in favor of meals.
What does that mean?
I separate dinner into starch/protein/veg and check all three boxes. That's it. Sometimes that means squash, sweet potato, kale, and peanut curry, or other actual dish with steps. However, most of the time it means:
1: boneless skinless chicken thighs (or chicken part of your choice, or pork chops, or tofu, or fish, or whatever) get either (a) marinated or (b) tossed with a spice blend and oil in the morning before I leave (time: 45 seconds)
2: rice in rice cooker (time: 1 minute, can be performed by non-otherwise-cooking partner)
3: kimchi or other prepared veg is in fridge (time 0 seconds) OR On return home wash trim and prep veg for roasting or eating (wash/dry/dress salad; trim oil salt asparagus or broccoli or frozen veg mix etc.)
4: broil or air roast chicken thighs (time: 25 minutes max depending on method, almost all unattended) (roast veg if applicable at same time).
Done. That's it.
Do any of u have decent recipes that are like 5 ingredients (not including spices) and take 45 mins or less to prepare i gotta stop eating sandwiches for dinner

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
