     the late-night shift at patsy’s brings fiona home when the time is edging one a.m., and she spends twenty minutes sucking a cigarette down to its filter --- just a precaution, making sure that everybody is asleep when she walks in. she’s tired, she doesn’t want to deal with anybody right now. 

     the door squeaking across chipped tile is what breaks her silent streak, fiona muttering soft obscenities underneath her breath as she pushes into her home.  she pulls her hat off of her head, the jacket off of her shoulders, and lays them across the back of the couch. tiptoeing into the kitchen, she spends another fifteen minutes brewing a pot of coffee with old grinds. she sits on the counter next to the machine as it loudly pours coffee into her mug. fiona perks up when the front door opens, but deflates when ian walks in.  

     ❛ hey, ❜  she half-whispers, eyebrows falling when he looks... off.  ❛ you okay? how was the shift? ❜     fiona knows he worked hard for this e.m.t job, but it subjects employees to some serious shit. she’s just worried for her little brother.

               fiona's on her break, sitting on one of the bar stools facing the other waitresses. her fingers play with the torn-up package of marlboros resting in her palm.    ❛ i’ve been keeping a tally, ❜  she says, loud, to get rachel’s attention,  ❛ of how many guys have looked or touched my tits or ass. lookit’. ❜      fiona sounds proud, almost too proud, of the tally marks on her left forearm, where the soft skin is.
