i lowk got scared seeing all this resurfaced discourse on this post ngl😭. but you guys are so sweet. you guys explained it and worded it so much better!! i love seeing people understand juvia’s character and appreciate it just like i do and it does sort of feel like mashima lowk forgot ab her at least that’s what i thought but the whole thing ab her main arc being resolved makes sm more sense!! not to mention same thing happened with loke and no one talks about it. i, on the personal, do not love loke’s character as much. i mean i loved his plot line. it was super interesting but after he just became comedic relief and almost completely revolved around lucy. which is fine and everything even though it becomes sort of boring. (i wanted to see more of him and the other celestial spirits). anyway!! point is he’s basically the same as juvia in a way, they parallel each other perfectly, yet i never see ppl talking about it or criticizing loke the way they do juvia. so that’s also pretty interesting…
i see a lot of ppl criticizing hiro’s decision to kinda “nerf” juvia and this is my take on it.
i think it has a lot to do with her backstory and not her love for gray. she didn’t get nerfed bc she fell in love. we can see that the only person who “accepted” and “cared” for juvia was the phantom lord’s master and that the only reason was for her powers.
but now that she is in fairy tail she doesn’t feel like she needs to be acknowledged in terms of power, the only thing she wants is to be loved and actually appreciated. we can see how her physical and mental strength develops but only when she wants to help her friends (not only gray). the fantasia arc for example, the tower of heaven arc, the tartarus arc.
we can also see she isn’t particularly interested in further developing her powers but she does it to be able to protect her friends bc she already has all she ever wanted. she’s always been powerful but all she ever wanted, like i js mentioned, is to be loved.
i don’t know if i explained this very well but this is how i see hiro’s decision to put aside juvia’s abilities and focus more on her relationships. i get that it can get frustrating but i rlly do think it reflects well on her backstory.

Hmm thinking about Natsu first being drawn to Lucy because she smells just like his scarf, like home, but the first time he meets Anna all he can think of is that she smells like Lucy.

gray and juvia deep dive & why they aren’t toxic
starting with juvia’s character. we learn very early on that juvia had no real relationships (platonic, romantic, etc) as a child, even seemingly no familial connections. this leads her to phantom lord where she believes she was born to be hated and bring trouble upon others. it’s also no secret she was very attracted to gray when they met, however she wasn’t “crazy” for him. despite being her enemy, he tries not to harm her and saves her when she’s about to fall off the ledge, showing her how kind people can be and that they don’t always hate you for who you are. this is what opens her eyes and lets her experience happiness and see the sun for the first time ever. this is when she falls in love with gray. from here, we see juvia pop up at random times in the background seemingly “stalking” gray. in my eyes it is clear that she just wants to join their guild and find her real family. she leaves gifts (the bento box) for gray almost as a secret admirer because she gets too nervous to approach him. she knows she was their enemy and doesnt want to bring more harm to the guild or, more specifically, gray. she is constantly trying to prove herself worthy and make up for the lack of connection she had in her childhood.
gray’s character is a little more complex. he is ridden with survivor’s guilt from ur’s death (and later on ultear). he is not open emotionally with anyone, putting on this tough guy act and trying to remain cool. his hesitancy to juvia is not because of her as a person, rather than her being a romantic interest and him not knowing how to deal with those feelings. even when gray was a child under ur we see him try turning any emotions he has into anger, always appearing to be the “bigger man”. he does show interest in juvia (romantically or platonically, either way the interest is there), early on he often asks where she is or how she’s doing, even seeming excited when she makes it into the guild. gray also clearly has a different love style than juvia, as he is far more avoidant and detached than she is, but he always makes sure she is safe and tends to look for her first if she is nearby. even when he is talking kindly about natsu he gets embarrassed and turns red, so it’s obvious that he would act this way with her. in the gmg/eclipse arc he sacrifices himself for her before ultear reverses time and again in the alvarez empire arc. while all these things could be platonic displays of interest, it still furthers the point that he cares for her. juvia slowly teaches gray that being vulnerable is okay, erza even urging him to be honest with her. his honesty is that he “appreciates” her, and we know he would not hesitate to say he dislikes her if that were true. in the 100yq he is getting confident and realizing how he acts is only reminding her of being shut out in childhood and makes it his goal to become “good enough” for her and someone who can protect her, leading to him being more emotionally available with her.
they have different styles of loving each other but that doesn’t make them bad for each other. it is also not a secret that juvia fell first, but that doesn’t take away from gray’s apparent feelings. as for other things that antis tend to point out, it is a fictional cartoon with very different humor than we’re used to. even most animes i’ve seen have a different form of comedy. this type of comedy is also used a LOT throughout fairy tail, not just with gray and juvia. this provides reason for her behaving this way and is honestly easier to brush it off. they push each other and are constantly bettering the other.

Haven’t ranted about this in a while mainly because I ignore content like this at all costs but for the love of GOD can Fairy Tail stopped being tagged as a “fan service” series?? Like okay yes it has fan service but aside from the movies and OVAs it’s pretty moderate. Most of the fan service is just gags anyway that features both genders. And maybe like Fairy Tail is fucking 16 years old? Like most main stream anime didn’t have a lot of “fan service” back then as compared to now where I can give a whole list of anime that has twice as much fan service. Like come on now it’s not even that deep for real. Most of the hate towards the series has been debunked by now and the trend is somewhat dying but there are still THOSE content creators who have to hate on something to get views who still spread these false narratives. But hey that’s just me. Anyway just saw a post that slightly triggered this rant.

Hot Take: I like Juvia and her characterization
Juvia grew up being treated as the bane of everyone's existence. She is always the reason it's raining and people can't go out. She makes hundreds of rain dolls to try to ward the rain away. All of the mistreatment made her bitter towards the world and other girls that could have the romance she always wanted. That's why she joined up with Phantom Lord, her rain was seen as a remarkable power in the guild so she convinced herself she was okay with it. Then all of a sudden she meets a man that can make the rain go away, the one thing she's always wanted. He acknowledges her strange character quirks that have always been veiled by her rain. Imagine spending your whole life ostracized and then someone appears that sees you as a full person. I would also fall in love. She's a lot because her whole life she had to be so little. I recognize the feeling.
Also I know anti-juvia people will point out that she has all those dolls of Gray, you remember the hundreds of rain dolls she made as a kid? Gray stopped the rain. Gray is the rain doll that worked. I do wish this was more obvious but that's what fandoms are for
#i love the whole gray dolls being rain dolls take!!!#ppl complain there are no well written female characters yet still misunderstand them and hate on them#pro juvia

I've been wondering what would she do with all those Gray-dolls when Gray moved in or they lived together 👀
