it's so funny that starting season 2 flint is decommissioned as captain for like half an hour which is long enough for silver to swoop in with the prestige tv equivalent of "hey you're a loser i'm a loser and this is the loser's table therefore i'm sitting with you" and it fucking Works. he had one chance while flint was fallen from grace and he shoot his shot. and thereafter there's Captain Flint dealing with Island Politics amidst his council of other Important Established Captains. and also there's this fucking guy there. lounging in his windowsill. who are you. i'm captain's flint right hand arm.man. i'm his confidant his everything his best friend his silly rabbit his what? his silly rabbit. his silly rabbit? is that what he calls you? no (:

black sails is about identity as performance, it’s about the mask you wear to do or survive unspeakable things but you wear it for so long it becomes your face, it’s about the moment you realize the puppets whose strings you’re pulling used them to fashion a noose for you, it’s about asking why the FUCK everyone is suddenly mad at you for saying the goddamn lines THEY wrote for you—

My full piece of Anne, Jack and Charles for @blacksailszine! (and closeups :D)
it was really really fun to draw them in such a lighthearted scene - the full zine features a gorgeous selection of fic, comics, art and meta about the entire show, and its free to download!! u can find it here
[Image Descriptions: Image 1: A digital illustration of Anne, Jack and Charles standing close together inside a tavern. They are framed by large palm leaves and monstera leaves on either side. Anne has a small smile on her face and is leaning forward to reach around Jack and grab a dark glass bottle from his raised hand. She holds a metal tankard close to her body in her other hand, with a drop of ale splashing over the rim. Behind her, Charles and Jack are kissing each other on the lips. Charles is firmly holding Jack’s face in one hand, squishing his cheek. Charles’ other arm is wrapped loosely around Jack’s shoulders to pull him closer, with his hand bumping the brim of Anne’s hat. Jack has a hand resting on top of Charles’ head, and he is raising his other hand to reach for Charles. A single candle burns brightly on a small table in front of them, casting strong shadows and washing the image in a warm, pink-orange glow. An empty tankard sits beside the candle. All of their jewellery shines in the candlelight.
Image 2: A closeup of Jack and Charles kissing.
Image 3: A closeup of Anne’s smiling face. /End ID]

“We were able to kind of strangely name something you didn’t think you were looking for a name for. Which is the space between them and not, you know, specifically who did what to Silver when he was a kid.”
“When I watch it the clear implication is that [Silver’s past] is awful. Which I think if the story is going out of its way to suggest it’s unspeakable, considering the things we have spoken about, I as an audience am willing to take its word for it I guess is a way of putting it, that if you are invested in that character and you understand where all of the norms are set for the show, for someone to say, ‘I can’t say it out loud’, suggests that it really is awful. […] [it] was so terrible that it broke his ability to exist within a story.”
“It was not credible that [Silver] didn’t have a story. There’s a hint that wherever he comes from is pretty dark. It felt right to not put words to it. It was so awful, it was something he couldn’t speak about. That that’s all you need to know.”
— Johnathan E. Steinberg, Co-Creator of Black Sails on Silver’s traumatic past
