I’m tired of getting these stupid offers to work on people’s “passion projects” for free, usually with the promise of compensation when/if the project takes off. Guess what? I don’t care that you’re passionate about it, I care if you’re competent. When you knock on my door asking for free work, its a clear sign that you aren’t. You might have hopes that your project hits it big and that you’ll eventually get rich off of it, but if you REALLY believed in it, I feel like you’d be more willing to put your own livelihood on the line instead of asking an artist to do it for you. If I do a bunch of free work hoping it’ll pay off, I’m not doing other work that could actually feed me and pay my bills. And what happens when the project doesn’t get funded or some important factor blows up or everyone decides to quit out early? I get screwed. So, no. I don’t want to work on your passion project. Not unless I get paid up front.

1979-1990 Anime Primer Dirty Pair: Project Eden (1987)

Kei and Yuri are a pair of trouble consultants working for the 3WA, a galactic agency that sends its agents out for a fee to help resolve special and ofttimes dangerous situations. Being very good at their jobs, Kei and Yuri like to refer to themselves as the Lovely Angels… but since they also have a habit of destroying everything in their wake, most people know them better as the Dirty Pair. In Project Eden, their first feature-length movie outing, the two travel to the planet Agerna to discover who has been attacking the precious mineral-producing mines there. Little do they expect to end up fending off vicious aliens, a crazed scientist and a handsome rogue… all while in their underwear! Beyond the obvious draws of sci-fi action, wry humor, cute girls and stylish animation, of note is Project Eden’s soundtrack. It’s so good that the movie basically revolves around it; director Koichi Mashimo (Ai City, Dominion Tank Police) decided early on that he wanted to make a film where the music spoke louder than the dialogue. At no point does the soundtrack and animation come together more seamlessly than during the introductory cinematic, rendered in a dramatically different style by famed animator Koji Morimoto (Neo Tokyo, Robot Carnival).

If the meat parfaits weren’t to your liking perhaps the Department of Impossible Cuteness will share these kawaii cat-shaped parfaits with you instead. They’re on the menu at a rustic cafe in Kyoto, Japan called Kotoba no Haoto. It’s a 150-year-old traditional wooden townhouse, or Machiya, where customers sit at low tables on tatami mat floors. Look carefully and you’ll notice the traditional wooden interior has been decorated with charming cat-theme accents, such as this trail of little white paw prints across the floor:

Kotoba no Haoto regularly changes the designs of their ice cream cats and the ingredients change seasonally, so you never know what the cat parfaits might look like. Assuming you don’t find them too cute to eat (look at those tiny chocolate paws!), it’s a good idea to get to the cafe early. They only serve 15 per day, beginning at 1pm, and they always sell-out.
