@starlit-graves and I went to our local 80s New Wave bar last night as a couple of Boingo fan boys. 💚 My look was green in honor of Nothing to Fear- my favorite album. Checkout starlit-graves amazing full SoLo look on her blog. 😁
*someone banging on a xylophone as chunky guitar riffs are laid over top* you know, i tried to shut my car in my garage and kill myself with the fumes, but the damn thing ran out of gas! *riff* went to the bridge to toss myself in the river, but the current seemed much too fast! *riff* i'm driving myself crazy pacing 'round my room and 'round my home! i should really call somebody, but i can't find the strength to pick up the phone! *riff* aye aye aye aye aye aye aye, why won't god just let me die?! *the nastiest, most insane saxophone solo you've ever heard as danny screams in agony in the background*
"How is it that countless marauding teens overcome heat, sweat, and potential personal harm to try to enjoy a rock concert?
Well, I was astounded again on Wednesday night. Oingo Boingo played the Second Chance, and they had all sorts of wacky teens screaming and jumping around at their feet. And these folks didn't seem to mind that their little hairdos got all sticky from haphazardly thrown drinks. No, NO! It was much, much too exciting down front. The tiniest girls were withstanding the greatest of risks just to get close enough to the lead singer. I think his name is Danny.
He's so funny! He says he's into body paint and I heard hes going to get a tattoo! Pretty weird.
They played a bunch of songs, I lost count. Sometimes they get a little long. I don't know, I like all the New Music- everybody does- but I just don't get their style. No way. I mean, just what does Oingo Boingo do?
Sometimes they play these really weird sort of art songs. Sometimes they play these really fun punk songs. And why do they have such a big band? Eight guys crammed on that tiny stage! Can you believe it! Their hotel bill must be really huge.
Danny didn't seem to mind being crushed on stage, not at all! He gave all sorts of special smiles to everybody, and he shook a lot of people's hands. He's so friendly! In fact sometimes he was so close to the crowd, he almost fell on top of the teeny girls! I was pretty scared at that point! I thought that we might have a riot scene!
Everybody loved Oingo Boingo. After their second, extra-special encore, the band promised to play for us again next year. In fact they may play two nights in a row! That should help them because they don't make a lot of money on record sales, and their hotel bills really are huge.
Too bad I didn't get the drummer's towel."

I really loved this silly 1983 article on Boingo and was afraid that the image would get so crunched over time that eventually it would no longer be legible, so I transcribed it here. Such an interesting little piece of music history.
"He gave all sorts of special little smiles to everybody"
it is IMPERATIVE that you listen to weird niche music of some kind. you MUST be a total freak about one artist that no one you meet irl will possibly have heard of
low key Insects by Oingo Boingo is one of the tightest-written songs I've heard Ever. it's So Fucking Efficient with its instrumentation, doing so much whilst maintaining focus and clarity. augh. I love it.
