As human beings, I think we […] don’t quite trust pleasure. Most major religions have tapped into this reality, inspiring more devotion, not less, by adopting stringent food rules—what types of food we eat, how much we eat, when we eat, or all of the above. And much as with restrictions on sex, there is something deeply human in the desire to follow these rules to the letter. It is as if by resisting ourselves and our appetites, we reassure ourselves we are above nonhuman animals in an existential hierarchy.
