What happens in the body during sex?
During sex, the body goes through a cascade of intense physical and emotional changes. Heart rate and breathing quicken, blood flow increases to the genitals (causing erections in men and swelling/lubrication in women), and muscles tense in anticipation. The brain releases dopamine for pleasure, oxytocin for bonding, and endorphins for euphoria, heightening sensation and emotional connection. At orgasm, powerful muscle contractions trigger an intense release of pleasure, followed by deep relaxation as prolactin induces a calming "afterglow." This cycle—arousal, climax, and resolution—not only feels pleasurable but also strengthens emotional bonds and reduces stress.
