The Awakening in this universe was fully intentional on part of the Great Beings. Why else would they make the Matoran and other biomechanical beings so much like living things instead of just utilitarian robots? In my universe, the Great Beings made the biomechanical people sapient with the intention that Mata Nui would experiment and discover the perfect political system that could be implemented into Spherus Magnan society, thus preventing another Core War.

In addition, the biomechanical beings are an experiment furthering the already extant use of cybernetics in Spherus Magna. The Matoran were an experiment into turning the Agori into immortal beings. Integration of the Matoran Universe into Spherus Magnan society or vice-versa was always the Great Being’s intention. And if the Matoran Universe turned out some sort of dystopian nightmare, there was always the Marendar to rectify that issue.
