i get it, it's like when that entire agents of shield season basically took place in a bunker, you make do and tell stories with what you can

as i said before, im very willing to forgive the rushed nature of certain storylines because of the cut in episodes

but there were still SO MANY plots/arcs/characters that were given the short end of the stick in s3

the season opened with harry working for the government and that wasn't explored in any interesting ways

joseph wasn't given any space to grow/become fleshed out. maybe let him realize how the greys treat hybrids/people in general is wrong by seeing how good people treat others! give him a better reason for helping in the end!

what was darcy doing all season? her substance abuse was thoroughly dropped. there was a hint of her wanting to prove that she's special and prove her worth by destroying the greys by herself? ok? why? you tie that into her being truly unable to ski anymore, maybe there's an adrenaline rush kinda thing, maybe she feels worthless and this proves she's not! the bones are there but it just wasn't well written

i said this before too but i really disliked how asta treated harry this season. super infantilizing and too much "have you fixed it? what are you doing to fix it? you have to fix it!" they had that beautiful moment in ep1 and she chose to help him at first and then i feel like they BARELY had scenes together

i think harry's arc was hurt by the cut in episodes because i bet most of it was entwined w/ heather. learning about romantic love, maybe learning the difference between lust and love. i see the vision, he's in his teenage emotions now. so like...idk im more forgiving there

ON THE PLUS SIDE: everything with kate and ben was FASCINATING this season. they were the least interesting to me in s1 & s2 and they kinda jumped to the front this season so LOVED THAT!

and look me being critical doesn't mean i hate the show now, i don't. i still laughed a lot. but dramedies have to walk that tightrope between the 2 genres and this season tipped too far into comedy without paying enough attention to the character stuff.

it could be that they felt they needed to make things lighter everywhere else BECAUSE the kate/ben stuff was so dark. i could actually see that. but i still think they went too far in the other direction.

anyway, on to s4!

now that i think about it, it’s insane how NBCUniversal’s fuckery has followed me my entire tv watching life

community, chuck, heroes, hannibal, everything conan went through with the tonight show

so really resident alien is just keeping up with the trend, and frankly the fact that it managed to have 4 seasons on cable this day in age is VERY impressive

ok my suspicions were confirmed. the writing of this season has felt really truncated and ive experienced network fuckery in the past, so i looked it up and surprise surprise, they cut the episode count of s3 down from 12 to 8 in the middle of preproduction

that explains A LOT

so harry has basically reached teenage levels of emotional competence. him having a crash out after heather leaves totally makes sense.

what im NOT liking is how asta is infantalizing him, calling him a child that she's raising? acting like his heartbreak is an inconvenience and not being empathetic at all? NOPE!

hmm ok im of two minds about heather:

on one hand: very funny actress, very cool design/makeup, the "my knees!" bit made me laugh every time

on the other: this is all happening very fast and feels more like lust than love, it's cutting into harry and asta scene time, and her voice is weirdly muffled (is it meant to be? because she has a beak? did they not have her do adr? it's just so much better for harry when he's in alien form im confused)

it took 3 seasons and a really dark story to get me fully invested in kate and ben as characters better late than never!
