My problems with my mom. Episode 1

I'm on the couch minding my business. My big brother, a 30 yrs old male is on the bed watching YouTube videos of DC comics, got hungry. He suddenly craved for waffles. He asked me to do it but I didn't want to. So he decided to do it himself. I mean he's 30 years old. He can do it. A short while later I can already hear him preparing his mixing bowl, hear comes my mother screaming at me. She screams that why am I not doing anything and letting my older brother to make the waffles. Apparently I should be the one making them. In the popular wording in the Philippines she said "kababae mong tao". She's telling me that because I'm a girl I should be serving them. They should not be serving themselves. This is not the first time she talk this gender role kind of scolding or talk. Everytime I don't serve them she goes off like she knows everything. Her logic is foolish. She thinks that just because I am a female I have to serve my brothers and be the one treated like a maid. Even though we have a maid on payroll. Apparently I have to be the one to accompany her to parties even though my little brother, my second older brother can do it, my father who doesn't have a job can do it. But does she even consider? No. Did I suggest that? Yes. But what happened? I got scolded again for being all knowing and talking back at her. Back to the part when I say her logic is foolish, here's an example/memory. She asks me to reach a bed cover in the closet. Problem is that its at the top shelf and I can't reach the top shelf even with a chair. I'm 5'3 or 5'4 in height, average or higher than the average height for females in the philippines. The closet is at least 7 to 8 ft high, 1 1/2 ft height per shelf, with a depth of a foot and a half in. I cannot reach that deep even with a chair. I told my mom to have my little brother to do it because 1) he's taller with 5'6 ft height and 2) he has longer arms and can actually reach the top shelf. Did my mother relent? No. Did she still push me to do it rather than my brother who is obviously more capable? Yes. She still made me get the bedcover. Took me 20 minutes to find a ladder from the storage and get the bedcover and she even got angry because I was taking so long. I just try to stay and quiet and ignore her words. Because there is no winning with her. I'm just letting the words go in one ear and out the from the other.

If family is the most basic unit of society and there's already problems like inequality in it. Especially gender inequality. Then no wonder we are nowhere near achieving a cooperative and peaceful coexistence.
