Social Media for Social Reform?
In module 6 of MCO335, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of social media in public, political and social discourse. Topics like intersectionality, gender and race were of main discussion as it pertains to social media and social change. I’d like to highlight the use of social media as a tool for social change, focusing on the Black Lives Matter movement. I came across an article by Andrew Perrin of the Pew Research Center that I found quite interesting. For me, the article highlights the advantages of social media as a tool of social change. Entitled 23% of users in U.S. say social media led them to change view on an issue; some cite Black Lives Matter; it discusses a study done to examine the influence of social media on people’s political and social views. It was a fascinating read and although the numbers weren’t drastically different, it’s comforting to know social media is having some success in social reform. Try it out and share your thoughts with me.

“Intersectionality is the belief that oppressions are interlinked and cannot be solved alone.” One of the ways to accomplish social change and fight against oppressions is adapting the concept of intersectionality.

#BlackLivesMatter isn’t meant to exclude others. It’s simple saying, if All Lives Matter, that should include Black Lives too.
