Maybe you’ve been there… It’s a normal sparring/ training session until you hear something pop/break. Getting injured sucks…big time. You hope it’s not serious…but a specialist confirms your worst fears You need to take a break. It can feel like a piece of yourself has been taken away. How do we deal with a body that doesn’t do what we want it to?
Ok, your elbow/ knee/shoulder hurts…but this is only one VERY small part of the overall pain that you have to go through in this period. So you become overwhelmed by a mix of internal and external losses.
What did I learn after a few injuries? If you want to speed up the “rehab” process as much as possible, then you need to EXPECT certain emotions and struggles to emerge after an injury. These feelings and behaviors are natural and a part of a successful coping mechanism. As with any kinds of loss, you may go through a number of stages directly related to mourning like Denial; Anger; Bargaining; Depression; Acceptance. So: - Allow yourself to be sad - Deal with it - Be positive, no matter what - Take an active part in your healing - Practice mentally - Be patient - Use your BJJ learning and experience in other areas of your life
How do you cope when you can't train?
